Are these novels worth reading? I like the ideas of alternate realities, however because they do rely on the existing reality, it's incredibly hard to find convincing alternate reality novels.

I'd say definitely. Focus is on the main character(s), but the progress of the Napoleonic war is the progress of their story.
Probably the biggest flaw is that history seems to have gone basically the same (but with dragons) in Europe up to that point.

Read it some time ago but it talks about nuclear power and weapons, alternative energy, global warming, terrorism and one or two other things I can't remember right now.

YES!

Although I have yet to order it. I have exams coming up soon and I think I'll re-read The Name of the Wind before Wise Man's Fear, so it'll propably be about two weeks from now before I can start reading.

I am oddly not-excited, even though I am looking forward to it. Apparently I am one mellow ######.

The curses of being busy....

I still have the Millennium trilogy boxset sitting in my room, waiting for some love.

I got and read the book a while ago, it is pretty good. Could try and be more subtle when it averts tropes though, being told "but oh no this wasn't like in the stories" once is plenty.

Am currently reading this (only 100 pages or so in) on my iPad, scared to look at the other replies incase of spoilers.

But yeah, enjoying it! Thanks for the recommendation.

4 years late to the party... Though, honestly, a great time to join it considering the second one is starting next week.

Am I really the only person on UWE who read the first one, and found Kvothe to be an obnoxious Mary Sue from start to finish? He's positively nauseating how seamlessly proficient he is at everything. Top it off with how much action he gets, and he starts to sound a lot like author projection. Patrick Rothfuss is a good writer descriptively, it was pretty easy on the eyes and brain to go through, and it's better than most fantasy fiction, but that's not a ringing endorsement of the book, it's just that the majority of the competition are horrible.

EDIT: I actually laughed out loud at my own (forgotten) posts from 9 months ago on the previous page.

The only reason I still read this topic is to check if Shockwave is contradicting himself or repeating himself ;)

heh, I think you mean Marty Sue.

Yeah, got a little of that, but there is at least some justification on some parts. Granted, the legions of girls flocking to him is a bit weird, and he insanely screws himself on several occasions. So, I mostly forgive him.

I didn't remember Kvothe getting action in the first book. Or are you talking about the second one?

I thought everything was a struggle for him, and while he does have natural talent, he screws up as much as, if not more than, he succeeds. I also remember him spending most of the book pining over a girl who he never really gets.

Of course it has been years so there may just be stuff I'm not remembering. But when it comes to protagonists that are "too good", Rothfuss has nothing on Orson Scott Card.

He's literally tripping over girls who want him in the first book. He's just too stupid to take advantage, or not interested, and the one he actually wants never gives in.

I read Gardens of the Moon, then the second one, then I started the third one. They're okay but the writing's nothing special and the writer seems to love complexity for complexity's sake. They're fine books but they didn't blow me away and stun me with brilliance like The Name of the Wind did.

I wondered if I should get into any arguments about the merits of the book or not. The answer, as it turns out, is no. I tore through the book at breakneck speed; that should be enough to indicate that I liked it, potential faults aside. And I like to think that the greatest sins should be punished first. I'll consider apologizing for my taste in litterature when Twilight and Star Wars novel readers apologize for theirs.
