under optimal conditions, i am capable of operating my vehicle at above the rated maximum of the roads i drive on. i see no reason to restrict speeds based on arbitrary statistics. on the other hand, there are suboptimal conditions when i feel that it is unsafe to operate a vehicle at the posted speed (or at all). the interesting thing, whenever i drive under the limit i end up with a behemoth-driving soccer mom on a cell with her highbeams in my rear window.

We have these adds on the national tv channels every day now, going on for a few years now. Here in Ireland we have abnormally high levels of accidental road death mainly related to speeding, drunk driving and poor road quality. Per capita, we have a road death rate about twice that of the UK. These adds won't work in the short term, the majority of people involved in these accidents are the invincible schumacheresque 20 somethings who have better things to be doing than listening to sensible advice from people over the hill of 25. The intention is a more longball hope that the message will sink in on the next generation of petrol heads. I don't think it will work though, in the long run people will just get desensitised to the consequences.

Anyone who thinks speed isn't a factor but in the risk of an accident and the severity of it doesn't understand the basic laws of motion.

I couldn't help but laugh... Ok, in the first commercial the guy dies while pinned in a humping position... Seriously, that's not fair, you can't expect me to keep a straight face for that. The second commercial I almost succeeded getting through it, the guys smug face as he slammed beers made it hard... then the accident, ok, still cool... but then they showed his face in the end and it was SOOO forced. I couldn't stand that. *******s.

k=mv^2 shows that velocity is an important factor in any collision, but isn't avoiding it altogether more important than making sure it happens at 45mph (30 residential)?
an actual driver competence test and better drunk driving prevention would be a start.

Okay, time for my rant post I suppose.

/Morbid rofl 2nd vid, didn't see the 1st one, simply put the kid got owned. You can always make another, sue the driver and end up rich. gg

Good things can come from bad situations.

    /End morbid
(Ps. yes I am an a-hole at times okay, I blame my work which I just got back from, but i'm usually a nice guy, k? At least tonight was Azn Invasion night and plenty of cute girls. ^.^ <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skulk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::skulk::" border="0" alt="skulk.gif" /> )

Cali takes the trophy in idiotic drivers. Too diverse and many people don't know how to drive. And I'm sorry, some race and age does matter. If you want to argue about it to me, keep it to PM. People don't signal, cut off, speed through, swerve and think the lane they are in is THEIRs only (which is when downshifting comes in handy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />). Lets continue: people on the cellphone, women putting on make up, blondes, teenagers (most of them at leastj and people eating. And also just plain outright rude and ingorant people.

Oh! Lets not forget about rich kids who just ride on mommy and daddy's wallet. -.- And uninsured motorist.

    For my driving:
I probably not the best driver out there, but i'm sure we've all had our stupid mistakes.
I rarely exceed 80mph and mind you, this is the speed of traffic on my freeway.

Any of my quick driving is either in the dead of night or the track.

Freeway: 80mph (65, but 75-80 is the speed of traffic)
Streets: 40-60 (my home streets are 45, my work streets are 55).
And I abide to them. I actually think i'm going slower though because my Speedo is off by a few MPH.

In heavy traffic, I drive slowly, I tend to keep 2-3 car lenghts from the car in front of me. Can't do anything about the people behind you. I'm not an idiot driver, I signal, check mirrors, turn my head to check, dont talk on the cell phone, look both ways, if I have to get in front of somebody that is kind of close. I set my blinker on for a few seconds until I get in. I even allow a lot of people to get on front of me.

I just hope that the "do good things and good things happen to you" rule exist. Gooo karma! (not video karma though =x)

Good driving isn't that hard to accomplish. PAY THE F'ING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD.

And feel free to tear my a-- apart on this post. I don't care. I'm hungry again, watching family guy, and Timmy needs 13 tickets to live and I probably need to get laid.

    /end rant

    ggkthxbai <3 you all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/siege.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::siege::" border="0" alt="siege.gif" />

    Ps. This was a rant!
Pss. Can anybody tell me what is up with Brian chasing the horse coach into the cabinet on Family Guy?

Paranoia, you're correct in profiling age and race into the poor drivers category. Let me rephrase that. Unless your dad has specifically trained you to mow down critters, you're going to swerve to avoid the dog.

Naw, my dad was a great teacher BUT, any drivers ed class, defensive driving course, or driver improvement course should teach you the basics here. If not, common sense would apply.

In other words, be prepared for animals to dart in front of you, and act accordingly.

You know, I heard that the kid actually survived with relatively little injuries (for what appears to be something that'd kill you instantly). Can't remember where I read it though. Probably snopes.

Also, for another drunk driving advert, this one right here screwed me up the first time I saw it. Because it was in a cinema. And it was <b>loud</b>.

In fact, that entire "THINK" campaign was fairly awesome, both in terms of cinematic quality (I remember one where they showed a motorbike-to-car crash from three different perspectives, the driver of the car, the driver of the bike, and a pedestrian, all up to the point of actual crash) and message. Especially that one with the little girl mangled up a tree and it goes backwards with all the bone snapping noises. Just... dude.

Also, this advert right here is the one that made me always start wearing mah seatbelt. Can't remember when it was, but it must've been 9-ish years ago now:

While I never tailgate (my car is a 1970's chrysler, I would have to be insane) trucks cant possibly brake as fast as a car can, and drafting does actually work. I get more ###### off about people tailgating me and other cars, especially in big suv's where I cant even see whats going on on the road in front of me.
edit, oh and I love driving fast <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> however that ad showed someone doing rather stupid things (overtaking over a rise and a bend?) I only ever speed when I am driving around at 2 or 3 in the morning and there isn't another soul on the road.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So you save some money on gas. Weigh that against the trucker swerving off the road for some reason, jack-knifing, and slicing your car in half, taking the top of your torso with it. Maybe someone out there can brake fast enough, maybe there's someone out there's who's a god among men, but I doubt it.

Not to mention the road rage you're referring to that is directly caused by tailgating. The extra cost in gas and maintenance that you get from accelerating and stomped the brake to keep on the guy's butt. And for what? Is it really <i>that</i> important for you get where your going that you need to do all these things? Have some god damn patients.

Like those people with the cellphone earpiece things. It can only be explained by a bloated self-importance. "I'm so important that I get so many calls that it tires my arm so I can't hold a phone."

I would like to get one because yes, if you do have to talk on the phone. I'd like to have both my hands ready. One on the wheel and other on the shifter.

    Sometimes it comes in handy.

You're dead wrong Rob. The reason for them is hardly self-serving... it's a matter of safety first, and convenience secondarily.

Besides, in many states in the U.S. handsfree is mandated by law. Regardless, it's another commone sense issue to use handsfree.

(Of course, I know that most car accidents don't happen because of people attempting to do driving stunts)

I have seen a similar commercial except it was much worst.

Both commercials do not show the actual driving and hitting.

One commercial shows a man who hit a girl. Well the man said, in a totally "unreal" tone<i>(You can tell the actor <b>attempting</b> to sound like he was surprised/serious but failed to make it sound serious and instead made it sound ridiculous)</i>:

Driver/Man -"OMG, I hit the girl. I can't believe it."

Driver/Man - "All my life I was always in a hurry" *So it flashes back to when he was a kid and driving a small bike, this was a pretty silly comparison to why he hit the girl* *Then it flashes back and there is a voice that tells you to pay attention or something*.

The other commercial was much shorter, simply showed the voice of the girl and said she was killed because of a driver who wasn't paying attention or speeding(forgot exactly).

Anyway, the first commercial I explained failed because of the things I mentioned.

See, that's something that I've wondered about: If the driver is talking to someone, does that negatively influence their driving? A headset doesn't seem any worse than having your passenger talk to you.

In Germany, overtired truck drivers falling asleep behind the wheel are (or were, not sure) a big problem. You know the kind, where you fall asleep for just a second or two. It's more than enough time for an accident to happen. Arguably, you don't fall asleep while engaged in conversation with someone, but exactly how much of your attention does it take away from the road?

My father always insisted that I talk to him while driving. He said it was too boring driving in stony silence, and it actually made sure he stayed focused. It was a bit annoying, because I sometimes got the distinct impression that he wasn't paying attention to me, only to the road (while at other times we had some really nice chats). I don't really know, is this unsafe driving or not? Should I have shut up and said nothing at all?

Driver Improvement Courses (and I've taken several) are quick to pint out that safe driving takes 100% of your concentration. Ideally this would mean no cellphones, eating, applying makeup, talking to passengers, smacking your kids around, or anything that would take your attention off the road.

    Ideally, I said.... ... .. .
