This is a little like making a "cigarettes are bad for you" commercial where someone drops their cigarette to put it out but when they go to step on it they slip and fall and they die and their cell phone goes flying and it breaks a window that someone was leaning against and they fall out in to the road and get hit by a car and die and then the car swerves and hits a toddler who was happily bounding about and the toddler dies.

No doubt driving slower would have caused that situation to be completely avoided. He would have never had to pass the driver in front of him, who was obeying the speed limit, and never would have had to swerve out of the way of the dog. If he had to, he would not have rolled, because he was at a lower speed. Also, he would have had more room to maneuver if he had not been passing the man on the left, which would have allowed him to swerve around the dog safely to begin with.
I don't think this is a terrible representation of what speeding can do. Of course its slightly over the top, but it gets you thinking about other people rather than just yourself. Its not only you who is at risk when you speed, its everyone else around you. The point still stands that, if you speed, and get in a wreck, there is a chance that someone else besides yourself may get hurt, killed or maimed for the rest of their life, be it an old man or a young couple in love.

Well, I think the commercial is unrealistic, think about it, why would he steer left in order to dodge the dog? Putting yourself in such a situation and you would see how it doesnt make sense, even in a split second decision. None of the cars even hitted the breaks which is unrealistically. And finally, accidents happen, sure the less speed you drive at, the less accidents (and how big they are). Unless you ban life, accidents will happen, let's not restrict our freedom to take our automobiles out for a nice run.

I think you need a little less focus on the specific manuevers he's doing; they could make a video where he throws on the brakes but can't stop in time to help from hitting a stroller, but that's not quite as effective visually. I don't think the commerical is advocating 'no more cars', and you don't need to go for a leisurely drive at 200km/h / 130 mph.
That said, I think it doesn't apply quite as well with the US, where much of the speeding occurs on highways, and if you've got two people kissing on a highway...well, who knows what they were doing in the first place.
...so, no drinking and driving...and speed responsibly, how 'bout that?
It's not speeding that kills. It's any unsafe driving. That red light you run, that unsafe u-turn you take, that guy in front who's driving a little too slow for your liking so you hug his bumper to make him go faster... All of it is unsafe driving, all of it makes the streets less safe and increases the risk of accidents. And whenever you do that, you endanger everyone around you. It's one of the most selfish things to do. Taking your car for a "nice run" is fine as long as that run is within the speed limit. Think the speed limit's too low, take your car on a race track (and those have speed limits too).
If stupid people kill, like BM says, then those who drive unsafe are stupid people. Keep them off the roads indeed.

Yeah. Two biggest problems in my area are tailgating and running red lights. I wish people would realize that it can take you up to 2 seconds to even begin to react to an emergency. If you're riding less than half a second behind someone, (especially the crazy *******s who tailgate 18-wheelers to "ride their drift") you're virtually screwed.

While I disagree that velocity and momentum in of itself kills, you ABSOLUTELTY can't be as good of a driver after drinking. So I fully support not drinking and driving. Cars have a seemingly wacky amount of momentum to them when they are moving, and as such you must give FULL attention to your driving.

While I never tailgate (my car is a 1970's chrysler, I would have to be insane) trucks cant possibly brake as fast as a car can, and drafting does actually work. I get more ###### off about people tailgating me and other cars, especially in big suv's where I cant even see whats going on on the road in front of me.

The biggest issues in my area are tail gaiting, cutting people off, and TALKING ON THE GOD DAMN CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING. (remember what I said about full attention?)

While I never tailgate (my car is a 1970's chrysler, I would have to be insane) trucks cant possibly brake as fast as a car can, and drafting does actually work. I get more ###### off about people tailgating me and other cars, especially in big suv's where I cant even see whats going on on the road in front of me.
edit, oh and I love driving fast <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> however that ad showed someone doing rather stupid things (overtaking over a rise and a bend?) I only ever speed when I am driving around at 2 or 3 in the morning and there isn't another soul on the road.
I would have just hit the dog.

Unlikely. Your instinct is to steer away from it. Frankly nobody makes rational decisions at the millisecond level.

It's the safest way to approach it, and entirely possible IF you're properly trained. When my daddy taught me to drive he stressed many times the importance of not swerving to avoid an animal. In over 2,000,000 miles of driving I did it several times. Sorry for the animal, but human lives are more important.

Let me rephrase that. Unless your dad has specifically trained you to mow down critters, you're going to swerve to avoid the dog.
