Anyone still playing it?
Previous threads about the game.
I had an itching to play NS recently, which I haven't been able to do for some time now in consequence of not possessing HL. So I decided to go for the next best thing and remembered a game Flayra introduced here a long time ago. Allegiance is a free action space sim shooter ala Freespace 2, but with a RTS component added, making it not unlike NS. I'm sure this is one of the reasons why the generated a lot of attention when it was first introduced here, as seen in the thread history.
I didn't touch the game for about three years, but just started picking up on it again and relearning the basics. The community seems to be going strong, and they're trying to do more to help newcomers learn the game to sustain a larger player base (the learning curve is very steep). While you'll usually find only one significant game going, it's usually pretty big, and the battle can be an epic 20+ vs 20+ massive war.
I'm playing much better now than I remembered when I first started, and it's keeping me hooked. Just wondering whether other people are still playing this game.

Basically, in order to promote teamwork, a commander has the ability to kick people from the server in order to free up slots for other players. However, you will NEVER be kicked from the newbie server. Ever. If you are the commander is going to get in trouble. Also, there are few hardcore commanders that will kick you just because you make a mistake as long as you are doing SOMTHING. Good things a newbie can do include scouting and dropping probes to warn for bombers, killing enemy attackers, and following behind your bomber in a scout and repairing it's hull. More complex (and possibly expensive) activities should not be attempted until you have the confidence to do them.
The game has an ultra-steep learning curve, and most servers will ban you for tiny mistakes. Well, that's what I've been told at least.

That's why you read the manual. I've finished the basics and I'm halfway through the "advanced" section. It even outlines what kind of silly mistakes people make and get commander banned for.
