    I've got you all beat. I've been playing since like a year before v1.0 and I'm STILL awful... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Yeah but you've played like 2 rounds every 12 months, most new players have played more hours than you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

its pretty much natural to humans to improve at something they enjoy doing, ns is no different

As logical as it sounds it is not. Otherwise we all rocked right now, would not we? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

There was a research (published in Fortune) about what makes great achievers great. And the conclusion they drew was: deliberate, painful practice every day many many hours a day. That was the secret. Genes and circumstances can be a plus, but not more.

    Yup.

[edit] except for the turret thing, that's just stupid.

Funny to see that moste of you complain how bad you are at playing aliens. hmm.. makes you wonder, doesn't it? Not that I'm anybetter myself at playing aliens.
I mostly play aliens, but once in a while I find myself on the marine team. Normally I just press F3 to join a random team.
And to be honest. If I get a shotgun, I can't hit a god dahm thing. Maybe an onos if it's right in front of me. But thats kind of to late *heh*
And me getting a heavy armour, is like pulling on pink overalls. Useally it only takes a single skulk to take me out. And if i got a shotgun at the same time, it's 110% sure change that the skulk will tear me apart.

i remember the days when people would actually ask me to comm.. now they yell at me for even looking at the chair...

thats why you should have 'voice_enable 0' on and mute those individuals who yell at you

At least you don't get the chance to get into the comm chair to realize how bad the marines are.

I've been playing NS since the release of 2.0 and I am okay. I'm one of the most useless marines out there. Sometimes as an alien I do very, very well, and sometimes I am the absolute worst alien on the entire server. But I'm definately not as good as I "should be" by now. Oh, and I can't comm at all.

In 2.0 I was better at everything. Don't know what happened.

lol, I started NS about a year ago when I saw a friend of a friend playing NS on Xfire. Been hooked ever since. I consider myself average and ever managed an Invite from a non-competative clan. Interestingly, over half of the NS members of Cor are 30+ and 2 are retired (Well, one only we just lost Grandma Juju- RIP). But the rest of us have a blast. Admittedly, we are mostly shooting up bots, but with our kowlegde of the maps we are constantly improving the waypoints on the maps. Several of them are very difficult to beat. Well, at least they are at our meager skill levels. But then thats the fun part! The sigh of relief at finally finishing a map after 90 mins of play is great! If we tried to take our skill to the next level (not that we have the time what with kids/jobs/life/ect) We would probably destroy the bots quickly. Were is the fun in that? if we destroyed them in 10 mins every match... sad (and dull).

In the mean time, our meager skills are challenged just enough to have fun w/o having to practice for hours every week to get to the next level. I hope you all enjoy the leagues and whatnot... been there, done that. On the great scale of skill... I and my clanmates are avg to decent- and we are happy. Anyone want to come hang out with us old people- feel free. We are on all the time stinkin the place up and having a gas doing it.

    I suck and I'm proud!

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->it's kind of amazing that it isn't a widely accepted fact at this point: skill of this type is genetic and the amount of time played has very, very, very little correlation with improvement of skill<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

What evidence do you have to support this statement?

Actually most of the problems are due to bad game settings: bad video settings, bad mouse settings, and bad network settings by default in NS and in Windows.

The turning point for any player is always to ask the question of whether or not they accept themselves as falling under the state of mediocrity. Are you really that bad or is there something the better players know that you don't? That's pretty much how I started out around 2.0, when I had no clue about why I played so badly, and when there weren't many tutorials about how to tweak your game.

When I fixed the problematic settings, there was a huge difference and I had the opportunity to improve my skill without the numb feeling of "just being bad".

    edit: and now I am a Hive Keeper <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

maybe if you focused on getting better in NS instead of spamming the forums.. then who knows...

The story of my skill...hmm....Well I had tons of fun back in the 1.x - 2.x days. All I can remember was that it was fun, but considering I didn't know how to bhop or really know any cohesive strategy, I probably sucked. With 3.0 out, I started playing a lot more, usually at my friends house, because I didn't have NS at home (no steam account). I think I've really started playing at a decent level since Fall 06. Bhop is good, but not great.

The one thing I've really gotten good with: commanding. Even without a mic, I can usually win when my players are good enough to follow waypoints.

My only other specialty is fade (I suck as onos, and lerk is meh to bad). I can rack up the kills and can do the blink/bhop combinations quite well.

I think the main catalyst to my improvement was...well, everyone else's improvement. The NS skill base has really increased, and it helps playing at a high pub level like at Jiggly's (well, most of the time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ).
