EU/AU PS3's will Emulate PS1/2 Games.
<div class="IPBDescription">To lower the cost.</div><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6166394.html" target="_blank">http://www.gamespot.com/news/6166394.html</a>
Rather than having a chip, they're going to offer patch downloads to play certain games via emulation; like the 360. So if you're without a connection to the net, you're boned.
I'm neither going to get a PS3, or do I live in either region, but I'm just posting to see what you guys think about it. Personally I think it's stupid plan, I don't know any people who have their GameCubes set up next to the Wii, or 360 next to the original XBox.

But then again, does backwards compatibility even matter? With the PS3's oft-flaunted, extensive library of MUST HAVE exclusive titles, why would you ever want to play PS2 games again?
silly updated consoles with their new games and fancy graphics. super mario 64 is where it's at (screw your DS version).
But why would I hook it up when my PC can just do the same? Same goes with the consoles in my eyes. I know most of my friends are looking to replace their old consoles with the new generation.
I play N64 all the time too, but via an Emulator using my N64/PS2 controller adaptor. The Emulator doesn't lock up on me nor give me horrible frame rates during some parts of certain games, online play is nice too(When it worked). My N64 is under my TV and I could hook it up, but it's really not as convenient.

Not to derail this thread from the inadequacies of the PS3, but one of the major reasons to have a console is toy play with other people in the same place. Sports games, Co-op games, racing games, party games - most of them just aren't fun sitting behind a monitor. Sure, Halo looks better on a PC (especially when released years later than its console counterpart), but then you lose the interaction and awesomeness that co-op gets you). Same goes with something like Toejam and Earl ("That's my present!") or NHL 2k5 or Madden [number] or NBA [number], where you're in direct competition. Some games are also a bit easier to control on a console (generally platformers and things that don't specifically revolve around shooting), especially since the controls may be specifically designed for the console (...and I don't know about you, but I don't like driving vehicles in any game with a mouse and arrow keys/WASD). Co-op online is nice sometimes, but there's never the side-by-side coordination that develops when you can punch the person sitting next to you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .
As for the PS3...backwards-compatability is fairly overrated. I know plenty of people with PS2s who never bother to play their PSX games. I know people with 360s that don't bother playing Xbox games (...well, we tried to play Ninja Gaiden, which was 'supposedly' compatible, but ...no...no, it's not). I had a PS2 at one point, I never used it for my PSOne games...heck, I didn't even really use it for PS2 games. The Wii is the only backwards compatability that appeals to me, but that's mostly because I really want to try Eternal Darkness and the RE remake, but I was too poor/lazy/unwilling to buy a GC.

I know, but many of the games I had on N64 were single player. But I refuse to play some games alone, Smash Brothers, since it's really not a good game without other people and half the fun is hearing everyone b*tch, and I see b*tching as an artform really. But then again, that's why I bought 2 USB adaptors. Controllers are the only way to go on some games.

Silent Hill, Shadow of the Colossus, Pikmin, Eternal Darkness, etc... But I wouldn't want to unpack the PS2/Cube everytime I wanted to play them, and I wouldn't want to just have the system out cluttering things up and collecting dust.
My friend and I actually played the original Twisted Metal games not too long ago on his PS2. It was nice not having to dig around for his PSX since we wouldn't have been able to find it.
Considering that PS2 games already look worse on the PS3 than on the PS2, adding one more nail to the coffin doesn't really make any difference if you ask me.

It makes a difference if the consumer has to pay more for less. (Or more for nothing, assuming you're not going to be using the backwards compatibility at all)
Well not for me seeing as I don't use consoles, but in any case it's just crap for those who do <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Becaaaaause... we love some of the titles? I still play PS1 games, your point? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> *cough*vandalhearts*cough*
Thats what is all about, old games brings back memories.
From my point of view, backwards compatibility is very important.
Like Liku said, we dont have to unpack our old consoles to play old games.
Some old games are worth to keep near your next generation console.
Games like Final Fantasy 7,8,9, Roll way (oh my gosh, it's great), Klonoa, Oddworld Abe's Oddysse, Bust-A-Groove, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3, Gran Turismo etc.
So, bad news for me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
but I'll never get a PS3 and don't live in europe so the point is moot for me =d
The bit about the PS3's "oft-flaunted, extensive library of MUST HAVE exclusive titles" was sarcastic. What does the PS3 have to show for itself? Not even a good grip on backwards compatibility, that's what. The system is not really taking off because there are no blockbuster titles for it, and now they're going back on the backwards compatibility (which sucked to begin with). Nails, coffin.
I must admit to being fairly unimpressed with everything I hear and see about the PS3 as well but I'm admittedly biased after being royally irked by Sony's comments about how great they were and how the consumer will buy anything they make because they're Sony. The nail in the coffin for me was when they scoffed at europe saying "We could release it years later and they'd still snap them up."
Jerks.
I'm not saying the company is dead, but Sony won't be even near what they were before after this.
... no dice.
I think the one thing that could have made me buy a ps3 anytime soon would have been GTA4 being ps3-exclusive. But since it's being released on the 360 and possibly even the Wii, I really have no reason to spend $600 on one.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
But you can play Blu-Ray discs for super cheap! Only $400 more than the XBOX360 HD-DVD player (which works without a 360). What a steal! I guess.

Beating up ######s with a Wiimote would be pretty cool.
Edit: Since when does a word for prostitutes that begins with an h a swear word?!
i think it's hilarious that it's not out yet in the EU. (and how sony was suing people who were exporting them)
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's because Europe isn't a real place. We don't buy computer games. Hell, we only got electricity installed last week. I'm sending this message by writing it on a piece of paper, rolling it up and feeding it down the phone line.
I enjoy negativity.

If 'pewp' (that's right, ######) is a swear, then ###### better be a swear too.
Why don't we just filter out rake, ho, panderer, doody, wee-wee, 'thingy', licentious, crotch, lecher, pervert, hustler, boobies, wiener and jugs?
(Those too (...with the exception of rake, licentious and lecher) were also words I said before I was 13 years old, along with 'pewp' (...I believe the natural progression is 'number 2', 'doody', 'pewp', 'crap', [...actual vulgar word]...). And H----r is probably one of the 'nicest' ways to say prostitute (and is probably one of the first learned (I'd guess around 10 from TV and News) for most people. The absurdity of this forum's filter climbed greatly after the resurrection of the servers.
...don't let that detract away from your GTA/Wii/PS3 related conversation.
Speaking of that Penny Arcade seemed sort of excited about flOw for the PS3, but the gameplay videos made it look excrutiatingly boring...
oh and I dug about a bit more regarding something I'd heard about the PS3's graphic capabilities and it turns out it's 100% true! The PS3 has a far less powerful GPU than the Xbox 360.
<a href="http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372/?spage=8" target="_blank">http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372/?spage=8</a>
Just reading the first paragraph or two you'll note that the 360 (a 2 year old console) can render literally twice as many triangles per second than the PS3's GPU.
...what are we paying for again?
It's not exclusives as almost everything on PS3 seems to be coming out on 360 now and it's not on graphics as the performance is better on a 360. What are Sony playing at? :/
Microsoft did exactly the same as Sony did when they joined the console-war with Playstation 1.
Sony got much support back then, so does Microsoft now.
The only thing i dont like about Xbox 360 is the DVD-player.
Since HD-DVD released months ago, why didnt they just put in a HD-DVD driver instead of a DVD-driver?
Okey, it's much more expensive. But the next generation of gaming is HD (in my view).
Maybe it's too late for me to be reading this biased piece of ish, but I didn't read a single thing about the PS3 on that page other than the initial sentence which went something along the lines of "The Xbox 360 GPU is much better than the Playstation 3 one."
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos</a>
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSX_%27Reality_Synthesizer%27" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSX_%27Reality_Synthesizer%27</a>
They're both really damned similar. The RSX isn't "far less powerful" than the Xenos. They're both about the same.
Sure, the 360 is a couple of years older than the PS3 (by launch date), but you have to consider other factors involved,e.g. the CPU involved (Cell is probably a lot better than the 360 processor in theory).
It's not some guy sitting there going "It's better because my daddy said so". It's an analysis of the performance.
As for the cell processor it has it's own little quirks but the 360 isn't exactly perfect in the processor stakes either. The cell <b>is</b> however more powerful than the 360's three processors if that makes you feel better :p
Feel free to read all the pages on that article if you want. It makes for interesting reading and confirms a few of the mutterings I've heard from friends of mine who are working in companies developing with the PS3.
Sony have only partially lost the plot, that's the problem. Yes, they'll not sell thousands of units to any customer with a gray cell in their cranium. But the sad, sad sad little truth is, they could make a box out of cardboard stuffed with crisps, 25 years after we have flying cars and houses on Mars, and they'd STILL sell truckloads here because Mummy knows Little Johnny wants one.
The fact they can openly be so negative about a market and happily get away with it speaks volumes about corporate marketing strategies.
The measure, over the course of release can potentially net them extra millions. And in todays culture, the consumer doesn't have the clout individually, or the ability to unite against the lowest common denominator to do jack all about it. They can do what they like, at the price tag they feel like, with whatever junk they happen to chuck in a box a week beforehand.
