That is an incorrect analogy. There is a world of difference between a simple statement and a copied and pasted amusing anecdote from some nether region of the Internet.
But how much difference is there between a "copied and pasted amusing anecdote from some nether region of the Internet" and a "could have been copied and pasted simple statement"?

Going by your logic, I guess I shouldn't say the word "The" because it's "Old". Reuse of common words or phrases is acceptable most of the time. However, having the see the same material posted over and over gets on ones nerves after awhile.
Thing is xyth, nobody is saying it's the word "old" that's the problem. It's the same meaning, the same ideology, the same self-centered principal being posted time and time again.
"I've seen it before so it's old. Because I've seen it that means it doesn't matter if the whole universe hasn't seen it because I'm the only important person. All hail me!"
For all it means it might as well be cut and pasted, like lost said... the important difference is though that "funny anecdotes / quotes" are pasted with the purpose of allowing others to share in the fun, "Old!" doesn't come from any such stance of generosity or joy, instead beating from the heart of self-importance and sour-faced-ness :p
If it's been posted on these forums several times before then sure, but judging by how many people have replied here saying they haven't seen it I suspect that's not the case, don't you?
Unfortunately for those, not everyone has every second of the day sifting through internet trash, just so they can dismiss everything said on a forum as "old news".
9/11, now that's old news (apologies to the americans on here, but I needed a huge story that everyone will have heard about). Regurgitate that, and it'll be dismissed as old news. Bring up something that only a few on these boards have seen, then it's not old news.
Gem, you missed the point. I am the most important person here.
Seriously though, Im saying there is an essential difference between using a small phrase and reposting large articles/ content that have already made their rounds about the internet a few times. This isn't so much a prime example, since it happened (as Im aware of) while the forums were down.
In closing I would like to say: don't get so offended when people point out that you are 6 months too late for something, it's usually an acceptable mistake. However, getting overly defensive just makes you look ridiculous.
