I started agin. All the remaining save files i had worked but gave a warning that new terrain might affect any saved bases etc. So i decided to start again... thanks for fixing the game I will look foward to enjoying this game once more.

A good base is somewhere you can grow food. Make water. Store your junk. Have enough power. But also make the things you need.
