It would be vary interesting if when you are starting out in the arctic biome, you are placing anchors for support cables for the space elevator. The point being that you have to set these up before the Space Elevator can be lowered to the surface. This may be able to have some sort of large boat or ship dropped down to the planet. Some thing to brake through the ice then attach its self with its own anchors to the ocean floor, and then fire the cables using rockets to the space station which would then lower the Elevator to the surface. Then the player could ride down with the elevator. This could work as a playable into to the game or a cinematic. Ether way the opining scenes would allow you to see the map well on the way down. Also if you had the cables snap after the player gets a good distance away sending the elevator up in which you would have to go to the ships to send more cables up to bring the elevator back down or sending the elevator crashing down then you need to survive.
