Adsl Line Noise Margin.

Does it affect speed?
My router can do up and downstream tests on my phone line to check the noise margin.

I was wondering if lowering these margins would result in faster download speeds. I currently have a 15 meter phone cable between the wall and my router. I could shorten this and see how much less noise I get.

Below are the details of the tests:

UPSTREAM

relative capacity occupation: 13%
noise margin upstream: 31.0 db
output power downstream: 18.0 dbm
attenuation upstream: 15.0 db

Any ADSL boffins in the house? I've only got a 256/64 connection. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be stressing the line but I'm only getting 24-26 kB/s download speeds.

I have no idea what all those mean, but I do know that always always always the shorter the cable the better, cause the less chance there is of screwups.

Little off topic but how much do you pay for ur ADSL line.
And i think the shorter the cable the better.

I'm in Australia and I pay the equivalent of USD$41.28 a month.

That's unlimited downloads too with no "shaping".

the line noise will go up in relation to how far you are from the C/O, and yes it does affect your speed. you might be getting 95% or so of your downstream listed max, and...75%-ish with your upstream. At least that's how it was for me.

put filters on all your phones or else you'll have to reconnect all the time.

I say remove the ADSL and go with cable, I know aussie has some nice cable connections available. :-) Or... go crazy and use a dedicated T1 :-)

I have a friend in Sydney that has some pretty hefty caps on his internet downloads. Who do you get yours from, and whats "shaping"?

    Shaping is evil.

Your connection speed is limited (64/64) after a certain amount is downloaded. Usually in the area of 2-3 gig.

The worst part is the ISPs can still say "UNLIMITED DOWNLOADS! BOOYAH!!!" nice and legally.

    EDIT: IDXnet.
