I was watching the movie again , the scene where the marine outpost in the desert gets attacked from the aliens coming from the caves.. so i wanted to do a similay map for ns. Made a little basic mountain just playing around.

I would like the help from other mappers to try and make a good map out of it. Just tell me if you are interested.

    You're definitely going to need custom textures for this project, cause that first picture makes my eyes sick <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Good vertex editing though, if a little over-detailed.

    good start but aliens will have a hell of alot of trouble getting down that pass without dying make some points of cover like rocks and boulders

    I was thinking more like some stone pillars and huge rocks or debris , and as you can see (if you can see it because of the bad quality) i made the tunnel leading to the hive on the second screenie and Im planning a tunnel to the right that leads near ms.

    Interesting. You are serious on creating this map, since Ns has lot's if outdoor issues/problems...

    If this is a serious attempt on making it a playable map then be sure to read <b><a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=62266' target='_blank'>Ns Outdoor Mapping Guidelines/rules</a></b> To make it work better with ns. This wide open outside area needs lot's of attention.
    You got one less problem to worry about and thats the commander view since it's a combat map.

    What are the r_speeds btw on that passage, btw?

    I would welcome any mapping help i could get.

    Did you use terrain generator for the lanscapes? Because if you didn't, that is some mad crazy Vertex editing.

    Looks nice but the textures.... burn, looks like a CS map with those textures.

    998 w-poly thats a lot less then I expected, but when you get further away it will shoot up.

    the rule is to keep the w-poly beneath 700 btw. with an overall of 500.
    This can be attainded when you use less brushes. Lessen the detail on the rocks. That should work.

    For the amount of detail in the mesh, it looks damned hideous. It's spikey, ugly, and just generally quite wrong.

    Also, it would appear (Although it's hard to see with that many brushes) that you have a great deal going to waste also.

    He probbly created it with Nems Terrain Generator (awesome tool btw. Allmost like ut2k3 terrain mapping <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    And: Have you covered all the other faces with NULL texture exept the ones you can see?

    Yeah you're gonna need a lot more costum textures, just using 2 halflife textures won't do it. And you also need to find a way to make the map open, yet possible for skulks to play on.

    Yes i did use the terrain edito, its a pretty easy tool.
    You just create your map in it and then all you have left is 5-15 min of editing to make the rocks look nice.

    I will look throught it now and see how much i can take away and edit to make it better.

    It'll be pritty good if you can get the textures right and lots of cover.

    If you watch the film it is really rocky and theirs lots of bolders around,
    their are also ledges.

    And as someone said earlier, aliens will need lots of cover of their gonna be slaughtered.

    I wish someone would re-did Wisky. That was a nice map, simple but nice.
    But it could have been made a lot better, such as the tunnels being enclosed.
    And a large hole/tunnel in the floor at the back of the camp for aliens to get inside.

    Anyway thats going off topic...

    I sugest you consentrate on that main area, if you cant get that below 700-800 r-speed or get some nice texture then their not much poijnt doing the rest unless you can think of somthing to have their.

    If you can get this done.... then id be speachless.

    Is Whisky the abandoned outpost they drop into?

    If so a smaller copy of it will be right behind where the screenshots are taken from.

    Its a good start but i reckon you could simplify that terrain to achieve lower r-speeds. Noone will criticize you for that, it is the hl engine after all <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Even perhaps doing it manually <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    Managed to bring the w-poly to 700 at the worst spot that was 1k before.

    And the other places are crawling up and down around 500-550.

    I'm impressed with that w-poly decrease, and it takes a whole lot to do that...

    Be sure you think of something for the sky so Skulks can't walk on it, block their path or something, since that's your next problem...
    And add some more cover for the aliens...

    Im just gonna add clip or is it climbable ? probably put it pretty high near the tops for the lerks and jetpackers .

    Clip is now climbable. Those rockfaces looking nothing like realistic though, too much terrain generator usage to be honest <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Updated :

    New textures
    Marine Base layouts completed
    Cave hive almost done
    Middle base (layouts)

    I changed the map so that it is completely surrounded by mountains.
    In the middle there is an abandoned marine outpost that is the important thing in this map. Its all about controlling that base.

    At the far sides you have the marine base and the hive and in the middle you have the abandoned outpost. To get to that outpost you can travel along the main big road or the caves and tunnels.

    Man i cant wait, itll be a great map that every custom server shuold have, and every sst fan sould like it to go with the models that i hope to learn and make someday. Do you know how to add models to the map, maby you can have the base with the machine gun towers and stuff...

    ps-can we have a pic of the new stuff?

    Are you talking about world models ? I will try to make / find some good ones then.

    But dont expect the map to be great , its only a funmap <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
