Katana: An almost legendary blade which can sometimes be known as or look like the old fasioned famous Western Sword which was predictly used by Samurai trainees in the 1800's. The katana blade is usually along blade lengths around 20" to 28" inches long. Around the last third quarter of the blade, it begins to curve as much so that the tip of the blade is in direct line with the handles grip holders at the bottom, which usually stick out around 3" to 5" long on each side. However its size is smaller than the almost forgotten Western Sword, it makes up for its up-to-date razor sharp edges as the old fasioned items tend to be much more blunter.
The katana was customizable in several ways. The main edition was to have the katana fitted to a carry case with a strap which went arund the body from shoulder to hip. Another was to have a personal emblem fitted to the centre of the grip holders.
Many elite specialists were very successful under the katana by wetting the blade with water before having it cut into its foe. The water of course would help the blade cut through skin easier so that the blade could concentrate and focus on damaging or even chopping apart the bone completely.

By the 1800's, samurai swords were well in to the "New Sword" era, with its "Buke-zukuri" style mountings [three and a half to four and a half feet long] being the predominant style and the one we see most frequently. This is the kind we see in the media as being inserted through the wearer's sash at the left hip with a wakizashi [except in movies and other outlets that showcase "freak" styles with swords at both hips and such].
The "Ancient Sword" period started before 900 AD. These were of varying styles, but led to the "Old Sword" period in which the typical "samurai sword" style we know and love today began to take shape. Originally four to five feet in length, trhe "Jindachi-zukuri" style swords were mostly for mounted combat [their length made them ungainly to such short-statured men on the ground] and were "worn suspended from the hip by cords which passed through two rings on the scabbard".
No idea where you got that stuff or if you just made it up... Samurai had been a caste in Japanese society for roughly two thousand years. Not just two hundred. The Shogunate system itself was established in the "Kamakura" period [1192 to 1336], but samurai had been around long before then, in some form or other.
Also, there is no set pattern for where a samurai sword will "start curving" or how far back they'll go. This was left up to the requests of particular samurai, commanders or even the swordsmiths themselves. They all worked differently, all folded the steel a different number of times, used steel imported from India or China, or even local metal, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. No two blades made by different smiths were alike in every detail. Even the heat tempering had a variety of styles, ranging from ocean waves to Buddha bellies and some even looked like chrysanthemums on rivers [talk about massive skill].

And the hilt is the "handle" of a sword.

well if you dont know what it is
it is a sword built to take out the rider and his horse
the blade itself is six feet long and has a handle that is 4 feet thus reaching a height of 10 feet
this is a real sword because they have found 1 but it was in pieces
also the sword is used the that show called roroni kenshin
I have to wonder the validity of that sort of information, though.
FFVII, anyone?
it was a one time swing
you swing it diagnoly down and when you get the right timing you will be able to arch it up
I could say the same about medival lances, and we all know they existed.
