I saw a link to <a href='http://nytimes.com/2004/02/12/technology/circuits/12shar.html' target='_blank'>this article</a> on Shacknews today.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Out of the blue, he heard from Gabe Newell, the managing director of Valve Software, based in nearby Bellevue, Wash. [...] "When we looked around to see who was doing the most interesting work in this space, Bram's progress on BitTorrent really stood out," Mr. Newell said. "The distributed publishing model embedded in BitTorrent is exactly the kind of thing media companies need to build on for their own systems."<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Heh. Not too suprising, as Valve has been saying for months that a distributed file xfer system was coming to steam. What a smart way for them to dump their server load onto paying customers eh? I just hope its optional and not required.

    bah, it HAS to be optional... because it's impossible to game with a decent ping if you're sending people files at 100k/sec <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    but if they do it intelligently, I wouldn't be so against it, considering how much work valve has put into HL for free over all these years...

    I'm sure its gonna be optional, if not just something to "Aid" people- VALVe is getting WAY too much money from people advertising, and even so, VALVe isn't the one that puts out the servers- its other companies. The filesharing thing probably won't be anything more than a much better working version of bit-torrent, but all the servers will be the ones that are already VALVe content servers.

    Well, BitTorrent seems to barely use any bandwith. At least for me that is. The pings on servers seems to only go up by 20-30ms. Not very much compared to the download system imbedded in Internet Explorer, which bumps the pings up a good 100-150ms. I love BitTorrent <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    EDIT: Im using Cable

    Well I'm on DSL and I can't even use Bittorent because it steals so much of my uploading bandwidth (8-9kb/s) that my downloading bandwidth goes down to like........20kb/s

    Yes I know those numbers are quite sad and pathetic.

    I love bit torrent and I use cable. I not sure what im doing, im just useing the standerd client with the startard settigs, but for uploading around 20kb/s, it lets me dl over 150kb/s

    I'm not sure if it's ok to share this. But I'm a DSL user and a little trick I found to get normal download speeds on bittorrent (Shadow's Experimental bittorent that is) is to change the settings to dial-up, max uploads to three, and download speed to six. It works very well.

    i think what they'll do is make it upload-abled when your not playing problem is how will it know if your playing a non-steam game?

    ummm:
    <a href='http://bt.degreez.net/' target='_blank'>http://bt.degreez.net/</a>

    Good BT client, shows you just what BT can ACTUALY do.

    Basicaly BT is good, so long as you have an easy way of modifying your upload speeds (and that you can foward prorts through your router <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    I hope that they implement something like this (so that you can turn it off if you want, or you can tweak it around so you get better speeds and every one else gets a hand up <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    And as a side note:

    BT Is the god of tech help, with the md5 checksum stuff built in you literaly CAN'T get a corupt installer <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Even if it's optional, chances are we will all get it anyway.

    I doubt that INSTALLING it will be optionsal, however if it is bassed off of the same concept as BT you will have the choice to share or to not share.

    If you don't share you get lower download rates, and the more your share the bigger portion of the pie you are aloted <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Also b/c you don't actualy download the file segments 'inorder' it is actualy possible to get the file when NO ONE has the compleate one (b/c every one should have different pieces and then they start trading them around).

    All in all, it is one of the best meathods of file distributions (for large markets) out there. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> (yes, I am a BT freak <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    I'm on DSL, but would really not mind this as a supplement to dedicated d/l servers - seeing their already standing infrastructure, that's the most likely way Valve is going to go with BT.
    Basically, I can imagine BT to work great in distributing custom files (think of maps), and a fast system for downloading custom stuff during server connection without of killing everyones pings sounds really not all that bad to me.

    I'm with Nemesis -- I trust valve to make good decisions and be at the technological forefront, they haven't really let us down yet... besides pushing HL2 so far forward... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    What they would most likely do is only have people uploading when they are downloading the same file. So for instance, when the new halflife patch comes out, everyone downloading the patch is also uploading it, so that their bandwidth doesn't die. I doubt they would ever have it uploading while its just idle.

    The point is... why it should be optional... PPL never complaint about uploads when using regular BT. In fact, that's the philosophy behind BT: The more u give the more u get...

    @BoNeLeSS

    yesm but the other principle behind BT is SHARING, and we know what people are like (thus why no one ever friken seeds...)

    And all of those people that don't like the idea of letting other people use their bandwidth DON'T use BT.

    people suck, nuff said <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    As long as my ISP doesn't start charging me for uploading ridiculous amounts of data, I'm okay with the whole thing.

    I always set mine to "dsl/cable slow" and change max upload speed to 15-20 (My max is 40), and max uploads to 5. My pings only go up by about 10-20 ms, if I'm only seeding and not downloading.

    I love bittorrent. I use it all the time to download ("legal digital content" - Ed), and run a tracker to seed my own stuffs. It's the future, friends. Of course, 'standard' downloads are necessary at the moment due to bandwidth limits, compatibility and whatnot, but in ten years time?

    Oops, got to re-seed some episodes of Scrubs. Goodness, Jordan's so fine. Oh no, my inner monologue is leaking from my fingers!
