I saw a link to <a href='http://nytimes.com/2004/02/12/technology/circuits/12shar.html' target='_blank'>this article</a> on Shacknews today.

Heh. Not too suprising, as Valve has been saying for months that a distributed file xfer system was coming to steam. What a smart way for them to dump their server load onto paying customers eh? I just hope its optional and not required.

but if they do it intelligently, I wouldn't be so against it, considering how much work valve has put into HL for free over all these years...
EDIT: Im using Cable
Yes I know those numbers are quite sad and pathetic.

Good BT client, shows you just what BT can ACTUALY do.
Basicaly BT is good, so long as you have an easy way of modifying your upload speeds (and that you can foward prorts through your router <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
I hope that they implement something like this (so that you can turn it off if you want, or you can tweak it around so you get better speeds and every one else gets a hand up <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
And as a side note:
BT Is the god of tech help, with the md5 checksum stuff built in you literaly CAN'T get a corupt installer <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you don't share you get lower download rates, and the more your share the bigger portion of the pie you are aloted <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Also b/c you don't actualy download the file segments 'inorder' it is actualy possible to get the file when NO ONE has the compleate one (b/c every one should have different pieces and then they start trading them around).
All in all, it is one of the best meathods of file distributions (for large markets) out there. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> (yes, I am a BT freak <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
Basically, I can imagine BT to work great in distributing custom files (think of maps), and a fast system for downloading custom stuff during server connection without of killing everyones pings sounds really not all that bad to me.
DSL sucks for internet access <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
yesm but the other principle behind BT is SHARING, and we know what people are like (thus why no one ever friken seeds...)
And all of those people that don't like the idea of letting other people use their bandwidth DON'T use BT.
people suck, nuff said <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Well that and BT bites for Dialup <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
You leeching jerk. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I always set mine to "dsl/cable slow" and change max upload speed to 15-20 (My max is 40), and max uploads to 5. My pings only go up by about 10-20 ms, if I'm only seeding and not downloading.
Oops, got to re-seed some episodes of Scrubs. Goodness, Jordan's so fine. Oh no, my inner monologue is leaking from my fingers!
