When a word has four L's in a row, and gogogoch as part of it, I discount it as a word. I don't care if it's a foreign language, that's just excessive. I mean really. Do you think the founders named the town with such a long word because of immense foresight, knowing they will have founded such a ridicuously obscure award-winning place?

Whoever named this town is probably the same guy who made the letter "y" in german called "ipsalon". I'm sure of it.

What a coincidence...I was looking up the longest word today. The longest is about 1,900 letters long but the best I could find is 1,352. And here it is. (yes, one word)

The name of that virus appears to be a string of amino acids written in long hand. So in theory you could type out a name like that for the entire human genome which would be however many billions of letters long...

Adenine Guanine Thymine and Cytosine are the only known base pairs of any species on Eatrh so it could not be a string of DNA.
  • venomusvenomus Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8951Members
No, I just gave DNA as an example of complex molecule you could derive a longhand descriptive name for. Same goes for any chemical.
Can't think of any, but there might be other scientific or specialist fields with derived naming systems. ALso, compound words can be made in certain languages like german IIRC.
In any of these cases the longest possible word is only limited by your imagination/patience.

meh, I still stand by The Fine Print (+1 old school points to all who get the reference). Antidisestablishmentarianism is the longest ROOT, non-medical word that isn't gibberish. So therefore, blah to your silly domain name silliness. All hail <a href='http://www.antidisestablishmentarianism.com' target='_blank'>antidisestablishmentarianism</a>!

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Antidisestablishmentarianism is a political philosophy that is opposed to the separation of church and state. The term originated in the context of the nineteenth century Church of England, where antidisestablismentarians were opposed to proposals to remove its status as the state church of England. The term has largely fallen into disuse, although the issue itself is still current. (See: Act of Settlement)

"Antidisestablishmentarianism" is often quoted as one of the longest English words that has an actual meaning (as opposed to words that were made up for the purpose of being long — see Longest word in the English language), although there is a longer word that falls in the same category: "Pseudoantidisestablishmentarianism", meaning false opposition to the separation of the state and the church.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I can assure you, this place does exist.

Being from the UK myself, i've actually heard of this place before, so it's not really all that shocking or funny.

Here's what <a href='http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch' target='_blank'>nationmaster.com</a> has to say. Interesting piece of information on there, apparently llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the <b>third</b> longest place name in the world.

*EDIT: Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaakitanarahu appears to be the longest.
