The playtests I've been in recently have been really fun. Most of the changes are slight tweaks to speeds and resource costs, resource rates. I'm not sure how flayra is doing it but recently the games -even the long ones- have been more fun. I've had more intense battles and struggles over areas with real teamwork than I remember from the last few builds.
Personally I find my self going for the role of offensive GORGE alien. Being right up there just behind the front lines healing the LERKS and FADES and SKULKS who are just trying to take out the marines and -hopefully- wipe out that siege turret so I can drop a def chamber is amazing. Then I'll throw up a small nest of webs, a few offensive chambers to hold the corridor. Just when I think we've got it won and have reclaimed the area - I realize all my alien brothers are dead and here comes a small squad of 3 or 4 marines. I'm talkin heavies with grenades - look OUT! Explosions goin on all around , my health dropin as I try to squeeze past my buildings as fast as my little GORGEy legs can move me. Intense.
Take tribes 2 for example. Most times, people are jsut milling around, pointlessly, doign nothing.
But, grab the flag, ski away as fast as you can, and start calling for help, and people take care of you. People swoop down in a shrike, and drop off their vehicle so you can make it home alive. People run interferance with an energy draining gun, so you can jet away, sacrificing themselves in the process. Heavy guards come off the base, and keep a nice rain of mortar fire down on the people behind you for suppressive fire...
And the thing is, even if no-one else on your team touched the flag, it was their cap!
The guy who gave up his vehicle feels all warm inside, for having provided crucial means of you getting away. The people who ran interferance for you feel like they've accomplished something, and the heavy who kept your tail clean with a missile launcher takes solstice in the fact that you would have been shot down had it not been for him.
Teamwork takes care of it's self. If you help, if you do a good job, people will rally to you. If people rally to you, you will be victorious.
And if you are victorious, a victory in Tribes 2 is a team effort, and the joy that is shared by the team as a whole! The guy who sat in the basement and kept the generators alive all game feels just as important as the person who capped the flag 7 times.
This is why teamplay will not be a problem. People will realize, eventually, that even if they are not the person with the highest score, if they lift up the star player, and if the team comes through, everyone is gratified from that.
That's a beautiful best case scenario, Legion... but, you have to realize, that's not always the experience in Tribes 2 - it certainly hasn't always been like that when I've played.
I am a loner in Tribes 2 who rules the sky with a shrike. Yo9u may think i'm not a team player, but I almost always win, as i defend flag carriers, soften defences, kill assaulters and hunt flag-hermits.
I must say that even in Counter Strike, I often feel good just knowing that I distracted some T's just long enough for my team mate to diffuse the bomb in safety.
YEAH! Most team-based mods have some great gameplay opportunities like that. In CS it's the best feeling in the world when you realize that the hostages just got rescued because you kept the last remaining T busy with your 5-7, and then he guns you down with his AK right as the "Hostage has been rescued" message comes across the radio.
man... great examples, ALL OF YOU. but 1 msg, cs got lamed the minute all the hackers came... it became Camper/Hacker-Strike, instead of the original Counter-Strike. i wanna play tribes 2
but i do believe that at the beginning of release, where all the players know each other from the forums, i think they'll play like a real team, maybe not that together or close, but pretty good. but it'll get worse once a lot more ppl know about... might even turn into a lame game like cs.... not that i'm dissing ns or somehting, its just that that might happen to any game.
Well of course you will come across those who don't teamplay very well. But I firmly believe that NS will be able to support all types of players. Aliens don't need to be organized into little assult groups to win- you can work together and be the lonewolf at the same time. Marines will naturally attract teamplayers- those who go off alone will find themselves dead and probably not having any fun.
...It boils down to CHOICES. Marines = Maximized Teamplay / Strategist(commander) Aliens = Lonewolf Bezerking / Support gurus (gorges)
Choices everywhere I tell you! It gives pretty much everyone a chance to play the role they enjoy- which helps reduce people getting their kicks by being TKs or what have you.

I think that the ppl that just run off on their own will work on the aliens side. and the ppl that have the patients to work together are on the marines. Any other way could mess things up. I have seen some real stuborn ppl play that just wont listen no matter what u do. As an alien, these ppl will have no problem cause of the "silent communication", seeing teamates in battle through walls to a degree.

Oh, BTW, Tribes 2 is down to around 10 bucks now, you just need a system with 800 Mhz or higher, with a decent video card.
noooooooo I cant find tribes2 in stores anywhere(bah ill just get demo).. But yea in tribes 1 is was ALWAYS the guy fixing the generator the whole game and putting turrets everywhere near it... and in the modified servers Id put about 30 blast floors on in it the 30 blast walls the a buncha force fields then a buncha turrets at entrance (it was perfect if people would distract other team for 10 minutes then the generator would never be killed) and after that I would fortify the entrances to the whole build and every once and awhile down a hall and outside in a random spot(Id also fortify the flag after the generators, I forgot to put that in) and id NEVER capture the enemy flag but others would and I was happy and my score was high and I had warm feeling inside and my teammates were happy.(that was biggest run-on sentence ever) I dont think that this game will have as much hackers as hacker-strike(cs) because the hackers got bored of the game and wanted to try something. Also because they added LOTS of RECOIL in some patches and made certain guns bad. Also you could get headshots. Try and headshot this guy heh only thing that an aimbot would be good for is finding hidden guys (in a dark corner). Im sooooooo glad this game is almost out.
Team Fortress Classic is the best example I can think of about pub teamwork and whatnot. Anyone who is not a complete newb or a DM freak knows that they either must defend their flag or get the enemies. Whenever I am playing I find people will always communicate with you to tell you which way the enemy is going or where your team last dropped the flag. People will defend tactical spots they know are best without interfering with teammates. I find 90% of the time the defense always knows how to layer itself and people will always call incomings if the enemy happens to pass them bye. They even tell their own team when they are leaving their position to resuply or that they are low on health so they need backup of some sort. Engineers repairing others armor and medics healing infections. This is all on normal pub servers running official valve maps.
Then you get into the maps where it is an unspoken rule on how to play that map. Openfire for example will always be known as the OvD map. One team has offense and no defense, the other team reversed. These maps provide so much teamwork, its almost as if you were playing with a clan at times.
I know most of you are worried about no teamwork in pubs because most of you play games like CS where its basically save your own hide in pubs and get the most kills. I find it very hard to find a CS server where there is actual teamwork and communication to achieve the objective of the map. That is why some of you are scared that NS wont work with public servers. Only when with clan members have I ever seen actual teamwork used in CS.
From what I know of NS having to worry about this stuff only comes when llamas enter the server or ignorant people. Anyone who decides to download this game will have some knowledge of how to play it. They will realize that it doesn't take them and only them to achieve victory. I bet that you will find more then enough people teaming up and communicating strats and whatnot to each other. Even if they are on the alien team I still believe there will be a good amount of teamwork and communication used as much as the marines.
My best part of Tribes 2 (before it got boring and repetative for me) was on Katabatic I was driving along the pass towards the other base in a tank with a gunner when strikes flew over me, It was an amazing experience, I also liked tailgunning and transport, must re-install it sometime

Oh yah, back to topic. I find it kind of sad that TFC has more team playing than CS.... well then again, it makes some sense, but at first glance, you'd think CS would require some coordination but it really doesn't...

TFC is great mod, but in some CS servers I find a couple of people willing to work together. I think when playing NS and faced down with this bugger any marines close by will want to work together.
