The Laser On The Marine's Helm

I've been thinking ever since I first started playing NS what it's practical function was. Especially after watching the intro-movie. I mean why would the marines want to run around with a bright laser-pointer for every Khaara to see? My guess is that it serves somewhat like a distance meter that becomes visible due to some stuff the bacteria emitts, what's your guess?

And yes I know the laser beam isn't visible in the game but why do they turn it on during the movie?

There used to be a metamod plugin wich allowed you to have a lazer. Those were cool days.

Back in 1.03 there was a plugin that gave all marines a red laser beam on their weapon (all but the knife).
At the end of the beam was a bright red dot (like the hl rocketlauncher).

    - marines still shot as bad as without the laser.
    - SC wasnt really used in 1.03, so noone cared if the laser was blocked by cloaked stuff.
    - skulks always knew were better not to stand.
    - marines always looked down the bottom to hide their beam from the skulks around the corner.
    - marines did slightly more teamwork (one laser beam was easy to note, more than 5 didnt matter)
    - Servers lagged more due more traffic.

I liked the plugin for its athmosphere allthough it made no sense.

Search up Ramms+ein's pack in the customisation forum - lasers abound in it.

    I remember that.

Smart marines pointed their lasers away from where they knew the skulk was to draw it out.

    I hated it

Perhaps it's to show the other marines where you're looking/covering. I wouldn't mind seeing it in game as long as it's invisible to kharaa.

There are custom skins for both marines with laser helm and for the pistol and LMG.

The lasers dont stick out so much that its a cheat (to let you see them) its mainly just a nifty detail thingy.

you need to install the transparency .dll so you get the transparent laser effect.

    Its pretty cool

You can get them over in the released topics area in the custom skins thread.

It's still not impossible that the pointer will be outfitted with a solid gameplay role - after all, Flayra specifically requested it on the models.

Yeah I loved that laser. But I usually play aliens. It was nice to know if you had a rambo coming your way or if you should run from a group of marines.

The laser is the worst thing for the marines as it lets the aliens know what you're aiming at and if you're near.

I'm glad it's not part of regular NS because it would only hurt the marines drastically.

True - but can you think of anything that it could be actually useful for?

I can think of A) Crosshair replacement, and B) painting Kharaa buildings for comm to see/seige targetting.

Thats all I can come up with....

And anyway, I havent seen lasers properly implemented in HL yet, the beam always lags behind <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

There was a 1.04 plugin that had the marine lasersight. It lagged the server and it made it easier for skulks to know when you're coming around a corner and also showed where you were aiming to them.

The laser could have an on/off switch and be used to detect cloaked aliens

The LANVancouver server used that, and it was so fun. The marines were running around with knives out like CS players, switching only when they needed to fire. Whenever people had the LMG out you could stay perfectly out of sight, because you always knew where they were looking. It really added to the spookiness factor. Good times. =]

They need to do it for NS2... I'm sure it will be on a higher-generation platform rather than HL (most likely HL2, but hey, there are other engines that don't look so bad either), but I always like to drool thinking of the dark corners with the new shading features of these kind of engines, and how skulks would be the creepiest creatures alive. HL2 needs to come out... now.

I think its a good idea to give marines laser eyes. But obviously they need to up the power on the laser.
  • PseudoKnightPseudoKnight Join Date: 2002-06-18 Member: 791Members
Just make the laser outside of the kharaa visual range.
  • sykoasylumsykoasylum Join Date: 2004-01-18 Member: 25426Members
As alurcard2. said, have the laser come with an on/off switch. This could easily be done by simply replacing the flashlight seeing as how nobody uses it. However, it seems to me that the laser would be more for aesthetic purposes rather than for improving gameplay, and seeing as how all the new textures were added for .3 it really doesn't seem necessary.

I still think it's some infrared module that allows marine to see cloaked units <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think it would be smarter to put the laser on the the weapon if it was going to be crosshair replacement. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    FLASHLIGHT!!!

I think it fits though....besides, the only flashlight I can see is the light thingy on the marine's armor (below the chest area)
