Bast is loads of fun. Though the new BSP2MAP was brought up before, it does not work on a good number of NS maps due to the fact that they run so close to the HL map limits in so many aspects.
Again. Decompilation only worked to form an 'onionskin' to re-create the brushes from. The straight decompile resulted in fractured brushes, no textures, and many other errors... BSP2MAP does not give a 'clean' decompile either, and would need a re-create regardless. Manually. Sheesh... if you're going to jump into such a long-running thread, at the very least read the FAQ on the first page.
can i ask (without reading over 100 pages) why they removed ns_nancy? it was the only map i knew of by heart.. new update.. GONE...

Umm... Nancy wasn't lost... I have the 1.04 map on my harddrive... why can't you use that? Yes, many of us have it. The problem with the old map is that it was compiled with the wrong hull file. This wasn't apparent until 2.0 came around and now Onos are stuck every time they evolve. And using /stuck is simply not adequate enough of a fix for the NS team. Plus, no balance changes were able to be made so the map's gameplay became outdated.
So why don't you just take the map, and make the changes needed? The .BSP file is nearly useless when trying to make changes to a map. It's the final optimized version. The Nancy-Team did use it though, in two ways. The first was for reference. Taking screenshots and walking around, they were able to get a good idea of what it should look like. Second, by using a decompiler and were able to get some of the brush work back. This only made using getting the basic dimensions easier to get as decompilers are simply not very efficient and the brushwork they provide is far from optimal. If it's decided at some point that the map just can't cut it, then and ONLY then will it be released publicly as a "custom" map. That scenario is highly unlikley as the map has been played before.

Somebody should put on the first post in large bold letters. "THIS IS AN UPDATED FAQ REGARDING THE PROGRESS OF NS_NANCY!!! PLEASE READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING QUeSTIONS!!!"
I don't think people realize that the first post in the thread could actually have current information.
Seeing someone remake bast would be a beautiful thing. It's one of the best looking maps that NS has, it's full of atmosphere and tiny details. But layout wise, it's one of the worst maps ever. Siege points are all screwy, MS is a mess, Double res is within spitting distance of MS, and the refinery hive.... yeesh.
But a remake of this map with the spirit of the original, the same textures, but just some longer distance between areas and a certain weldable fixed (and refinery chopped down to smaller size or at least broken up in some ways) would be the best thing ever. Well, second best thing, after getting nancy back. ; )
Atmos is a good distance for the marines, feedwater is right next door to it as well. Atmos isn't exactly a welcoming area to take though given how dark and how many places aliens can hide in.
Should it come to a situation where bast will have to be cut due to changes within NS meaning bast can't be played properly i will most definately help Wish relic would just come back though ;(
I have a working decompile of bast, so if bast ever needs to be redone, we can do it, I'm a little group right now, I think we can do it pretty well if it's ever needed.

.rmf and .map files are both source files... All lost for bast. If u have a workin decompile of bast, Id like to see it, very curious. Id be willin to help recreate it if the decompile is good enough.
You know, I realize it's fun to tell people how silly they ae for violating forum etiquette (see example in this post), but you people (you know who you are) must realize, if you've read the first page yourself, that it doesn't MENTION the use of new and improved decompilers on Bast or Fenris.
What does forum etiquette have to do with bast decompilers mentioned on the first page?

EDIT*
Was gonna double post but decided against it.
I also wanted to say that I really see no need for re-doing Bast since Relic got all huffy and left the community because someone didn't like his map. (Oh god forbid we have any enemies, run relic run.) He won't be around to maintain it so why waste the time? I mean, come on, the creators of frequently played maps get some crap, who cares? I bet KungFu gets some n00bs tellin him Eclipse sucks from time to time, but he's still actively involved with NS. It's so sad that such a great map had to have such a wuss for a mapper. (Just my opinion, feel free to state your own.)
Yea, not like those awesome guys who I heard are redoing nancy....
Because bast is a great level and maybe our show of love for his level will lure him back, wishful thinking maybe. Also relic leaving doesn't make him a wuss. A lot of the mappers don't even hang around here in the first place and avoid situations where critism could potentially arise but you don't dub them as wusses, or do you?

QUOTE (Mr.Ben @ Jan 15 2004, 05:04 PM)

Because bast is a great level and maybe our show of love for his level will lure him back, wishful thinking maybe. He's not a wuss, I just can't believe that he left because of what was said about his map. It's not like mappers who make a map and then move on to other projects. Relic was actively involved and posted here frequently and then he left because of some comments made about Bast. I love Bast, it is absolutely the best map for NS ever in my opinion and I would have loved to have seen another map from Relic like that. I guess I'm just upset is all and I'm taking it out on Relic, I don't know.
Bast is definately a defining map for NS. And while I have no idea why relic left, I personally don't think that insults to his map ALONE caused him to leave. Until we hear from the horses mouth, we may never know exactly what happened to him. Maybe his personal life got in the way? Maybe he lost all interest in the game itself? For all we know he may have just worked on it at the last enough to get the 2.0 version out the door. It's his business really.
Bast is a fantastic map. He made great use of those textures and made an awesome atmosphere unparrelled in many maps.
Bast also has the great cathedral of open space known as Refinery!

Well, he happens to be a new father (his kid would have been born in early Summer 2003 IIRC), and I'm sure that's taxing (no kids here yet).
Bast is a great map and I wouldn't mind remaking it if someone decompiled it for me but it's really just too bad that Relic himself won't be able to nurture and care for a remade Bast.

Somehow it doesn't seem right to decompile and change a map that the author doesn't want worked on . . . I'm guessing Flayra owns the copyright to it, so it wouldn't be a legal issue, but it just doesn't sit well with me.

Ultimately its Flayra's project that Relic was a contributor to. I would assume they have equal rights to the map. So if Flayra oks the update there should be no problem, especially considering that Flayra is an active participant in the project and Relic is not. Not to mention that this is all non-profit. Principles aside, I've never seen anyone press charges over this sort of thing. Principles not aside, instead of making assumptions we should contact Relic through any means necessary and tell him in the letter that he doesn't respond in two weeks that we will assume his acceptance. If he doesn't respond in a couple weeks I'd say go forward.
After all thats the way real law works. I will also mention that I've had this happen to me...kind of. Someone remade one of my maps. He said he tried to contact me however and I got no such email. In the end I didn't do anything about it because there was no money involved.

That was a cheap laugh.
But laugh I did.

Well, perhaps I was quick to judge him.

Bast is a fantastic map. He made great use of those textures and made an awesome atmosphere unparrelled in many maps.
There were a few other arguments at the time in addition to the negative feedback on Bast. When he left he didn't say anything to the dev team, so we'll never know what the last straw was for sure.

Well, he happens to be a new father (his kid would have been born in early Summer 2003 IIRC), and I'm sure that's taxing (no kids here yet).

I'm guessing Flayra owns the copyright to it, so it wouldn't be a legal issue, but it just doesn't sit well with me.

When did Relic say he didn't want Bast worked on? Did I miss something?

After all thats the way real law works. I will also mention that I've had this happen to me...kind of. Someone remade one of my maps. He said he tried to contact me however and I got no such email. In the end I didn't do anything about it because there was no money involved.
