INCOMING COMPLETE LOGIC!!! Take cover...

1 = Octopus

2 = Octopi

***********
1 = Sheep

2 = Sheep
***********
Now for the clencher.....

1 = Rhinoceros

2 = Rhino's? Rhinoceroses? Definetly not Rhinoceri!!

Is an onos closer to an octopus a sheep or a rhino?

Exactly!!

Shoots and scores!! Beat that!!

Far as I know, it's either 'Onii' or 'Onosen'. I lean toward the former as it's quicker to say, rolls off the tongue pleasantly, and is less likely to make a Marine stutter if so inclined.

Something sounds clunky about 'Onosen', though it works for 'boxen' just fine.

So 'Onii' for my vote.

I simply cannot bring myself to say "oni", it doesn't sound right.

SEMI-RELATED: Did you know, the plural of "virus" is "viruses" not "virii"?

Either way, I just say "5 onos incoming" on teamspeak OR voice: n00bs and vets alike can understand it instantly, whether or not that's how they like to say it.

Onii?

"oh-nee-eye?"
"oh-neye"?
"oh-neye-ee"?
"oh-nee-ee?"
or
"oh-nee"?

The sheer complications of figuring out how to pronounce it is an argument for picking "onos" instead

"Onos" - meaty sound that properly conveys the fact that at least one nine ton mother flocker is heading your way.

"Oni" - wimpy, nasally sound that suggests the Onos is something out of Monty Python.

Goooooo Onos! (At time of writing, poll is 143/141 in Onos' favour. (: )

Onii. Own-I. Because that's what's going to happen if there's more than one of 'em.

Your statement is weakened, Fletcher, as this is English, and Onos is a made-up word. It's up to common-usage to determine the proper pluralization, though the phoneme breakdown would dictate 'Oni', of which the english spelling for the pronunciation would be 'Onii', dealing with the plural form of 'Onos'.

To address the comment made by the almighty Talesin, it is true, we do not belong to a herd, but political party.
UNLESS, of course, you really dont give a damn about politics , because to be irish and to get involved with politics may, eventually result in a car bomb!

besides, the onos does belong to a herd, or a united mind, depending on what server you play on

I believe that even if oni , or onii, or whatever you dandys want to call it is correct by the forum standards,
this is the way to change it, it is incorrect by game standards, and when it comes down to it, i , and the rest of my clan, are gonna scream ONOS!!!!
who cares how many there are, start shootin'!!
if someone on a server screams onos at me, i lock and load , and i prepare for onos, be it 1 or 10!

Plain and simple, I have NEVER heard anyone say or type anything but ONOS on a NS server when they were sending a warning of an onos approaching.

I've only heard this "oni" thing on the boards, probably because this is where people like to discuss things and be creative. But when you are out on the battlefield marines aren't interested in the proper pc term for their most deadly enemy about to devour them. They keep things simple so everyone understands:

1 ONOS
2 ONOS
3 ONOS
4 ONOS
and F4

[QUOTE=relsan,Jan 6 2004, 10:00 AM] Plain and simple, I have NEVER heard anyone say or type anything but ONOS on a NS server when they were sending a warning of an onos approaching.

on the CoFR server, the cream of servers, where i often played, onos is the said thing! and thats just one example!

This man is correct!

Not once ever have i heard the word onii or oni or whatever.

AND ANOTHER THING!!

Why would you want to name the multiple of the faithful creature, the onos,
after a terrible early playstation 2 game?!!?!
That game was called oni, and prounced ''on-ee''
THATS HORRIBLE!
If anyone came into a server i was in and said ''look out for the on-ee!!'' i think i would resort to violence, and drunken violence at that!

Flayra buddy, Oni is a dreadfully named playstation 2 game, not the plural of our wonderbeast

Octopi is not the proper form for the plural. It's octopuses. In Latin the ending puses is pi so someone started to say Octopi instead of octopuses. Octopi may be a common usage but it is not correct. If you want proof I will pull out my grammer book.

Maybe a word that sounds like Own-Us. Onus??
