Since i mainly use voice comm for such warnings (no way i'm gonna stop and type with an onos in my face) i just say "2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 Onos". Because i hate saying "oni" for some reason.

I voted for Onos because: Onos, to me, seems that it would fall in the same category of words such as deer and fish. Considering the pattern usually stays the same for animals (the Onos is an alien animal, but an animal nonetheless), I would say "Look, an Onos!" If referring to multiple targets, I would say "Look, there are some Onos!" I am almost positive that this the correct way because, if there ends up being a different kind of Onos (cough NS2), Onoses would be correct in referring to multiple species of Onos.

If we went with Onii, there would be no way to discern between multiple Onos and different species of Onos. You could use either Onos or Onii for NS, simply because there aren't multiple species of Onos. But if it is to be used correctly in NS2, given multiple species of Onos actually exist, Onii wouldn't cut it. And now, I am officially done talking.

Yay, I don't think like a drunk irish!!! I think flay should have put an option for onoses, because that is what I use. Onos = singular, too confusing to use for both, Onoses = plural, Oni reminds me of those Latin (or whatever) words, and reminds me of school, thus Oni = bad (and plus I would never say that over voice because would it be pronounced: on i, on e, own i, own e?

Well if you are talking about just one it would be Onos so according to the English language it would either have to be Onoses or there would have to be another word for it (like mice and mouse) so I vote Oni

I say oni, because in one of the original posts of the changing to 2.0 flayra said something along the lines of "the oni are running wild" and so ive said "oni" when i see more then one...but im usually on alien side so its more "omg where were you when we needed those nodes/chambers/hives etc"

Oni is the forum name for multiple Onos.
Onos is the name for multiple Onos ingame.

So there should be a "both" options.

The point is, theres no English rule against singular and plural forms being the same.

on another note, let us recap:

reason for calling it onos: its in the manual
reason for calling it oni(i): thats what Flayra calls it

Now that Flayra is having a poll to determine which is right, the reason for calling it oni(i) is void.

I remember that this has been discussed wayyy back when. I think it was before 1.0 was released... but I remember that everyone (including devs I think) agreed on onos as being plural. This was a while ago, but I still stick with it.

From the ingame standpoint, when people are talking about more than one Onos, they usually include something like "buncha onos" or "alotta onos." Maybe Flayra should talk to the dictionary people about this and see what they say.
