Ns2 Engines

I'd love to see NS2 on HL2 engine; however, I'm sure it would cost a pretty penny--and not sure what NS2's budget will look like. I believe, but not certian, HL1's engine would cost about $50,000 to license, so one could only imagine how much HL2's engine would cost.
I was looking at other engines, and one which seems to be within a good price range (Because other small game developers used it also) would probably be the Cauldron Cloak ( <a href='http://www.cauldron.sk/cloaknt.html' target='_blank'>http://www.cauldron.sk/cloaknt.html</a> )engine. Chaser, a game that has very close similarity to HL, is a beautiful game to look at; as well as, having the ability to run on lower end cards and still look beautiful--with shadows, reflections, bump mapping, etc.
I'm not sure how much the Cauldron engine is to license for the NS2 project, but definately worth considering.
Here is CloakNT Technology Demo: <a href='http://www.cauldron.sk/files/CloakNT_td.zip' target='_blank'>http://www.cauldron.sk/files/CloakNT_td.zip</a>
Here is Chaser: <a href='http://www.cauldron.sk/projects/04_chaser/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www.cauldron.sk/projects/04_chaser/index.html</a>
Here is a new RPG, 3rd person style game on the same engine: <a href='http://www.cauldron.sk/projects/05_conan/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www.cauldron.sk/projects/05_conan/index.html</a>

flayra didnt pay valve to let him use HL1 engine for NS, so he wont have to pay to use HL2's game engine to make NS2
Also, the team is looking into new engines for this project. Read--> <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=57372&st=60' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...1&t=57372&st=60</a>
NS2 will not be a MOD for HL2. Please read and understand what the goals of NS2's are before you post.-- <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/</a>
I saw the contest for the Unreal Mod, I believe NS would have WON this contest. Well, $50,000 just to license the HL1 engine is a lot considering the engine is like 5 years old itself, built on top of an older engine Quake 1. Also, let's not forget the limits of HL1 engine have already been reached--and I'm sure NS2 will want to go beyond what HL1 engine has to offer.
I doubt NS2 Retail would be on the HL1 engine--this the $50,000 is irrelevant.
So, by todays standards and what consumers are craving for in games (Graphics, Eyecandy, Gameplay, Game Life Expectancy)--other engines are being looked at. Why else produce new Grafix Cards if new games don't put them to use.
I believe Savage, a game that is very much like NS, but different theme is using the Quake 3 engine.
NS2 on the Unreal, Monolith, or CloakNT engine with DX9+ all the goodies! This game will be the best selling/playing game ever!

If you want to sell the mod, you do.
Discussed it at the VERC forums, try a search there, or just ask.
Here is a little discussion: <a href='http://www.chatbear.com/board.plm?a=viewthread&t=470,1070348280,31786&id=572830&b=2116&v=flatold' target='_blank'>http://www.chatbear.com/board.plm?a=viewth...=2116&v=flatold</a>
A full liscene is very expensive, and people dont usually buy that.
I would get the hl2 engine, it would probaly be cheaper if its a mod of hl2, and they just want to sell it...or.
A full liscense is not required.
HL engine is a modified quake engine.
HL2 uses..um I forgot.
Like you probaly would get the engine for free, since they have to buy hl2, then your mod.
or you could be sneaky and make a "imcomplete" basic users version. then "Donaters" version is ns2.

Does that engine support entities, like buttons?
I personnally am in love with the quake engine, and all its derivatives.
like quake, and halflife, halflife 2. The mapping system rocks, theirs entities, so you can have doors, and mechanisms.
If unreal engine supports water and entities like the quake engine, well then im droolin.

I don't believe NS2 is going to be a MOD of HL2 or any game--where you need the game to play the MOD. It's final destination is a Stand Alone game--just like the game Savage did.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge it supports buttons, entities, and all that stuff. Try out the new XMP MOD for Unreal 2--team based MOD, now packaged with Unreal 2, but a free download if you have the older version.
In Unreal Engine, you'll get everything you want from FlameThrowers, Vehicles, Beautiful Grafix, Awsome Meshes, Sweet Particle System, and the list goes on.

Many game companys buy an engine license and then mod it for their own use. They find it easier to license the engine technology (like the rendering, netcode, etc) and the tools that come with that engine license then add their own little aditions and their own levels, sfx, gui, etc.

In the end it saves time and cuts costs like crazy I'm sure, if you include salary and other such time based expenses. Personally I want to see NS2 using the HL2 engine, but if the costs are astronomical...

It would be interesting to find a cost for the Source license and I think the Source engine is probally going to be one of the best engines out. Up there with Doom III. (I'm not to up to date with the Unreal engines since they refuse to work on my PC Grr)

Someone earlier said something about a Million dollars. Is there any way to confirm this? I don't think it would be nearly that much, but then HL1, a 5 year old engine, is $50,000 and that is more than I thought it would be... BTW UT2k3 works on my computer, but Unreal 2 tried to kill my machine!
Quake I and Quake II go for $10,000 apiece

Yes, I know it's a mod, but we are talking about two different things here.
A MOD that you need the original game to play on--a modification of the game--these are basically games that use the SDK to build a MOD over the MAIN game.
Or, or MOD where you License the engine and make a new game out of it where you don't need the MAIN game to play--thus making it a stand alone game.
It would take lot's of time and money for a developer to make their own engine, so developers License already made engines--and work on top of that.
So, it's not considered a MOD in the consumers eye if it's a stand alone product. It's sold and bought as a game (Not A MOD).
You'll never see a game like, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy a MOD for the Quake 3 Engine, but if it's a small company trying to make it big, or a NO NAME game trying to sell more copies, then they might use the Engine's name on the front cover of the box--if popular to help BOOST sales; such as,
OneSneakYmousE Universe:
Using Quake 3 Technology!
However it is, the engine is almost always credited somewhere--depending on the license requirements.

I also believe a version of MAYA is on the UnrealT2003 to make models/meshes.
