    I just tried this around for 5 minutes on lan alone

    -Horrible Skins, models and of course anims
    -What a **** menu
    -Where is the realism?

    Possibly I haven't seen anything because I was on lan, but come on, is there stamina? All they did is remove the hud and inverse the use of the walk key. You're able to BHOP in a realism mod. You fire as fast as you want with a pistol. You can bh across a map and land with a little prone without hurting yourself. I don't know about you, but I think this is just horrible for the moment. I'll need to play around, but even alone I have a bad feeling.

    I would also have hoped the teams would have at least something different instead of ak-m16, whatever-whatever, sniper-corresponding sniper, shotgun-same shotgun. You know, something quite... noticeable? Like the terrorists able to fight without ironsights, but a much worse aim overall?

    Get a better finished look, learn the fact that a sniper doesn't look like a pair of grenades, make the menu more accessible and remove unrealistic elements such as unable to hit a trigger when you're not putting your weapon to your shoulder, bh-ing and if possible add side leaning to have around-the-corner peeking. Then the game would be presnetable. I'll still need to figure out the actual gameplay but it seems like a point-n-shoot like CS, only not as finished. Until then, I'll be playing Call of Duty for realism AND a nice and friendly interface.

    I just played a round, and i must say i wasn't quite as disappointed as a number of you were. This is, however, no means to say i really enjoyed my time playing it.

    It's all just way too slow, painfully slow. And this hardly makes for the most entertainment when you're stuck spectating for god knows how long while your team aimlessly wanders for an age, stopping at each corner for, what seems like, an eternity.

    It lacks so much polish it's not funny. The menu is awful and entirely uninformative. Ok, so this is an M21412412547 rifle, how much damage does it do? How many rounds to a clip? What weight is it (If that has any bearing on movement speed, which it should, considering this is a "realism" mod)? It tells you nothing.

    And the lack of hud.... While you can argue that the lack of hud is there to be realistic, which i can agree with you partly on, the fact is that our bodies have an in-built hud, if you will. If you are hurt, you feel it, you know where the pain is coming from and you know how painful this is, but being a game, you have NO IDEA how much pain you're in, or where you were hit. Also, you can't check your ammo. I'm sorry, is looking down at your belt / pockets to see how many clips you have really that difficult to code into the game? Just show a bloody ammo counter!

    The lack of ammo counter means you have to count how many rounds you fire yourself so you know if you're nearing the end of a clip. The only problem here is you're not actually told how many rounds you have in each clip, so it's useless. Realism my ****!

    Also, the mapping is, well, crap. The textures are appalling, the models are excessively sub-standard and the fact that a good deal of coding for the animations hasn't been done just screams to me that it <b>should not have been released yet</b>.

    I'm sorry, but 4 years of work.... for <i>this</i>? While i can grant that a number of features may be under the surface, they're just not apparent at all! It's supposed to have some sort of great damage system, but what the hell is the point if you're dead in 2 bullets anyway?

    *EDIT: Just to add a groansome pun: Hostiles In Tents: The new CS-style camping game.

    Yea, four years for this is kind of a waste. Among the afforementioned animation/hud/menu/etc etc etc problems, they really need to be sure their maps are good. I was just in a game where the only way out of Nato base was one road between some tall buildings, which eventually led to a crossroads with a building low enough for Tango guys to get up and camp on it, and shoot us if we even peeked around the corner. Then, if we didn't come out, they'd just stroll down the road into our spawn and kill whoever was there, trapping them so long as they stayed at the road entrance. I am very glad I hadn't even heard of this mod until today, my hopes aren't dropped at all.

    OK. Heres my say on this 4 year old mod in the making.

    Modern realism mod with interesting concept

    It lacks speed so its like really slow and the not being able to fire when not in ironsight mode sorta sucks especially in close quarter combat because ur a bit zoomed in and it really messes up ur sight of the room ur in.

    Player models and animations could use alot of work but i don't want to say alot on account of their animator went MIA (missing in action) for like a long while up to the release.

    On the positive side
    the mod feels really cool when ur going in a squad with like 4-5 people taking down skinnies on rooftops entrances and whatnot. Maps are cool too i like the one that looks all black hawk downish with the broken down cars in the street. I tell you its a freakin adrenaline rush going right through the streets with oncoming fire raiding down on ur back. Same goes to the situations when ur in enemy terrirtory trying to complete ur objective not knowing who or what is gunna be around the corner

    anyways this is only a beta 1 release and not so polished like ns ::rollseyes:: <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> But hey its still a great 4 year old mod with a very nice concept that can and probably WILL improve

    hahaha i can finally say i played the beta 1 of a mod

    I cannot begin to explain my complete dislike for this game. It's slow on <i>many</i> levels, in both actual gameplay and spectating. There is no HUD, which to be honest I think is because they were too half-assed to make one. The coding is just abysmal, many bugs, half the animations don’t work, the players moonwalk, etc.

    In all honesty this mod is for the people with no hand-eye coordination. Everyone is moving at an astoundingly slow pace, making them easy targets. There is no skill involved in killing someone. It’s whoever sprays the target first. This is due to the fact that with iron sights up and you’re aiming for the chest or head, you just can’t see anything if the target is any closer than 20 feet. The model totally blocks your view if the person is too close. Aiming for far off people isn’t too bad, that is unless you’re on that jungle map where it’s about as bright as… black.

    I’ve found myself being blown up repeatedly with no indication of a grenade present. The blast radius seems extremely large.

    5.5 / 10

    The sounds are the only good aspect of the game.

    I dont think they where too half assed to make one, I think that they were going for the realism. You dont have a HUD in front of you when you walk to the refridgerator, or when you are out shooting a gun.

    As for the bugs, isnt it a beta release?

    As for player speed have you ever seen a real police SWAT team in action?
    Or their training videos, notice how they move in a slow coordinated matter as they sweep and scan the area?

    Unless they are out right engaging someone they never just run around randomly.
    I think its a good start.

    Its a beta we all have to remember that. CS, DOD they all had these problems at the start. And dont think NS is an exception, it was released as a full version1. The standard players never got the chance to deal with all the crap in the beginning of NS. Just think of the total lameness of the nuke in the very early age of NS. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    When u move it, it automatically unzips itself.

    for people complaining about how long everything takes, how large the blast radius is..

    NEVER.

    ever.

    play OFP.

    it requires you to GO PLACES.. and has realistic explosive force! so don't ever play it!

    one thing i liked a lot: the shotguns!!! i love how their shotguns ACT like SHOTGUNS!!

    basically they took a pic that was already posted on their map page and added in model renders, to the point of being unbelievable. stuff like ragdoll physics (arms hanging over ledges) and loads of ospreys in the sky w/ players repelling out of them...

    Anyway I checked the mod out, and it was pretty much what I expected.

    About the nicest thing I can say about Hostile Intent is that they are the text book definition of what arrogance does to a mod. Since the beginning they had done nothing except say how much the mod was going to rock and how smart they were with thier "super secret brand new ultimate aiming system that is so cool we can't even tell you about it". Add together publically assaulting other mod teams, photoshopping screenshots, and other forms of misbehavior and lack of ethics, and this is the end result.

    Its really really really hard not to say "I told you so" right about now. :P

    Yes but as stated before you can look at how many clips you have and you should have a fair idea of how much "health" you have. I don't care what they say, it's still a game and games need rudimentary aspects to make them <i>fun</i>.

    And good god this has been in production for a <i>really</i> long time. The bugs should have been dealt with by now, i mean spawning dead is very hard to overlook.

    Swat teams also take a fraction of a second to aim and fire at a target. Here you have to wait a bit to get your sights up. That means that if Joe is walking around with his sights down to move faster he better hope to hell that someone doesn't pop out and shoot him. There is a boundary between fun and realism. Yes you should be able to walk but when a swat team moves across an open area do you see them waddle along at an incredibly slow pace? Yes the game has a run feature.. thank god. But it also makes you produce the biggest footsteps ever.

    3/4 of the people I?ve played with thought the game was crap. I agree with them. The designers of this game just don?t understand that there is a finite difference between realism and fun.
  • JezpuhJezpuh Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15157Banned
    Now, here comes my point of view.
    Like said before, the realism in this mod is just too... I mean, how the hell are you supposed to see how many health or ammo you have with no HUD? This just plain annoys me, the fact of not having a HUD.
    You should at least to see how many ammo/clips and health you have. No mather how realistic the game might be.

    Now the ironsight aiming, this just plain SUCKS. I mean, come on people, cheez. It takes 2 freaking seconds to get the ironsight, and if you're lucky, you just might get a kill. Turning when in ironsight is way slower.
    This makes their "awesome aiming system" look like total crap.

    Walking is waaaay to slow, they should not set default moving to walking speed. I would be much better if you had your own controll of walking. Like CS, DoD and NS style. You can run, but don't expect it to be fast.
    It's more like taking big steps.

    The animations are bad too, they just don't seem ok. You see a player rolling on the ground, and halfway he stops. Blegh.

    The teams are also very hard to recognize, especially in the overall dark maps. I've cought myself many times shooting a teammate. When you aim over a person, you either see a litte name comming up white, or you see no name. This little name that shows up when you aim at a teammate is even noticable.

    The maps, however some are very nice, the most are too dark in my opinion, way to dark. Some maps just require nightvision. Maybe this is what the maker intended, but at least make nightvision work then.
    Some maps have too little spawnpoints, wich results in, you guessed it, telefrag aka spawnkill.

    The menu's are very hard, I've had many problems with them, I suggest they put in a new team and weapon selection menu.

    The models overall are ok, some weapon models are still a bit ugly, especially some skins. I've had some problems to see the difference between an AK and mp5 in ironsight. This should not happen :\

    The flexibilty, where is it? I mean, you can FEEL the half life engine, look at DoD, NS, or SC. When you move it goes very flexibel, when you jump, you jump nicely and smooth. HI doesn't have this flexible feeling, tho it uses the same engine, it's not the same for me. Don't look at me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I can feel engines.

    The overall game is bad. I mean, badly finished, I know it's a beta. But then at least playtest it. I mean, come on, they worked on this 3 years I've heared. Doesn't this give you the feeling they had enough time to sqeez em' out?

    I still hear many people say I shouldn't whine, but it's just that bad. I can't see how people like this in it's current state.

    I'd give this game a score of 3/10, for all the bugs, the unflexible movement, and no hud (+ other negs)
    This game could be a lot more fun if they killed the bugs. Yes, I know, this is beta. But still, look at NS, they care.. They should've called it an Alpha version.

    Maybe if the makers really would do something, instead of talking about how cool their mod is for 3 years, this game could become something.

    And I can see that the game has...potential, there is something cool about slowly walking around with your gun raised, hearing someone running and suprinsg them.

    But, I'm just really **** off at the devs and testers. Most of the testers say things like "OMG ITS REALISM ITS SUPOSED TO BE DARK ! DON'T SUGGEST THINGS, THIS IS THE BEST MOD EVER". While the dev Charlie has been in the military, this mod is just a pain in the **** as realistic.

    However, the good news is that with a few patches, it will work good.

The mapping is awesome too, the textures can be substandard sometimes, but the great mapping in general makes up for it. It's on par with CS maps, even if they don't come near what us NSers are used to.

    Review I posted on another forum:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Ok now that the hype has settled down a bit and I have had more of a chance to play the game on public servers its time for my review/opinion.

    One of the main things I look for when I get a game/mod is weapon models. They have to be true to their real life counter parts, and look decent while doing so. The HI models for the most part fail in this department. The skins (barring the m4) are just plain bad (spas 12 anyone?) but they look good in the iron sight department, which is all that matters I suppose since 90% of the reload animations.. arent really animations at all. The gun just drifts off the screen and you hear something that can only be assumed as reloading. It appears the devs took the lazy way out and cut corners on the skins and models where you dont see them (underneath, sides etc) I suppose thats why they dont show them during reload animations but one look in HLMV and you can see no effort has been put into these guns. Then we have the player models and skins, which range from average to awful. Nothing else to really say about them except that they look way to similar on most maps. Ive been literally 10 feet away from an enemy and thought it was an ally.

    I am also a huge sound guy. My games have to have good sounds, especially in the weapon department. Games just arent as fun if your ak47 sounds like a nerf gun. Unfortunatly some of the gun sounds fall very short of my expectations. Such as the MP5 and silenced MP5, both of which use the same sound. Not only that but the file they used was too long so everytime you fire it overlaps the last shot. On the other hand, the walking sounds and bullet hits/whizzes sounds great, and really make you keep your head down. Its just a shame the same ammount of quality wasnt used on the weapons.

    Maps are of course integral to the gameplay and for the most part they deliver. Although they arent perfect by any means. Most maps have a 16 player cap that causes players to be telefragged on spawn if the server has more than 8 per side. Many maps are overly dark, relying on the use of night vision to guide the player. There wouldnt really be any problem with this if the night vision was correctly executed. Many people (including myself) couldnt get it to work and had to manually bind a key. Also some maps such as HI_jungle, where the night vision would be most useful is rendered nearly useless due to a bug that causes it to strobe on and off, causing head aches and nausea. Also some maps are way too small, such as HI_twilight. The tangos spawn on a pool deck literally over the nato spawn. So chuck some grenades down there and bam the rounds over. But none of that is as bad as the openable doors that have been placed on each map. These doors are a griefers paradise. They are bugged and if you close a door behind you the no one will be able to open it. You can imagine what llamas will use this for in public servers.

    And last but definetly not least is the game play. Its there, some where.. Youll see it brilliance shine through the glaring bugs every once and awhile. And when it does youll forget all about the problems with the mod. Unfortunatly those instances are few. Bugs run rampant and the animations are laughable. Lack of a strafe animation after 4 years or development is unexcusable.

    Hostile Intent is a mod of contradictions. They dont have a hud because it isnt realistic, but you can see the score board, and players names in the corner when you look at them. The argument of "realism" cant be used for everything. Especially some of the more obvious bugs. Not being able to see personal servers, or name and password them? These are simple, easy to fix mistakes that could of been easily avoided but werent.
    In the end it wasnt worth the wait, and its a very sloppy beta all around, but the game can be fun. They just need to make the fun stay around, instead of leaving so quickly. Worth the download? I really couldnt say. Its free so.. the price is right. But I wouldnt really recommend it to anyone. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I wonder if the animations are very different--I would use some of these leftover SWAT models I've had for NS for HI if they really are that bad.

    note: the animations are all complete, just not coded. The dev team felt that 4 years has been WAY too long (note that the project has restarted from scratch at least 3 times in those 4 years, so they're not just a bunch of lazy bums <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->), so they rushed it out early. Probably not the best decision, but on the other hand, people will finally get to play it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    uhh......no comment......<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Why no comment? CS Beta 1 was the <i>worst thing ever.</i> Now it's the most popular game on the net by far. I'm saying, give it time, and the game will evolve.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Actually, I'm fairly OK with it. I just don't really like the altitude of the people. I'm making fun of them, not the mod. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    How would you feel if some person who hasn't played the mod for more then a day came on your forum and posted

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Sorry, but did you test it at all? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I don't seem to care.
    It's the mod that's crap, so it deserves a crap review. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->may this mod die quickly.....farewell.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Now the ironsight aiming, this just plain SUCKS. I mean, come on people, cheez. It takes 2 freaking seconds to get the ironsight, and if you're lucky, you just might get a kill. Turning when in ironsight is way slower.
    This makes their "awesome aiming system" look like total crap.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Just a few examples. What would you do if someone came on to the NS.org forums and said "NS sucks and is boring, it is totally unbalanced, skulks move too fast you can't shoot them at all, onos are too powerful, marines never win" etc.? You'd flame them and tell them to back to CS, try to convince them that the game is balanced, or tell them to play the mod some more. Does that sound familiar?

    Before you lay down judgement on something you've played for <i>two days</i> give it time. And jezpuh, your definition of constructive seems a little inaccurate. Constructive criticism requires you to point out what is wrong, why it is wrong, how you feel it can be corrected. Saying something like

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Walking is waaaay to slow, they should not set default moving to walking speed. I would be much better if you had your own controll of walking. Like CS, DoD and NS style. You can run, but don't expect it to be fast.
    It's more like taking big steps.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Now, support this with some evidence <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.
