Top 5 Anime Of All Time

The list is finally complete.
I just had a rather long and interesting discussion with an old friend about our Top 5 favourite anime series of all time (Not "OMG THIS KNEW SHOW JUST CAME OUT AND IT IS MY ALL TIME FAV!!!!1`!!~~!!").
I kept trying to avoid putting a proper list together because I get so undecided about it... I know my Top 2 favourite anime series of all time was extremely easy to decide...just not their order... oh well...
Anyways we managed to pin down my favourite series, movie, ova, soundtrack and mangas. I think that covers a lot of my bases.
Let's just say that this is a list of my all time favourite anime, but it is likely to change...
Here goes nothing...
Series:
1.) Patlabor - Probably one of the most well designed series EVER. Realistic mecha design, engaging characters, interesting plot, an odd spot of comedy. Patlabor is god. All hail the mighty Ingram 98AV! INGRAM BANZAI
2.) Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - I originally saw SDF Macross back when I was a young lad when it was a part of the Robotech Saga. I can easily say this was one of the key elements in getting me so addicted to anime in the first place. God I had such a hard time with my Top 2... Patlabor and Macross have essentially the same elements that make them so goddam enjoyable... in the end Macross loses out to Patlabor simply because of the Ingram.
3.) One Piece - Sail to island, meet friend, learn islands problem, beat crap out of problem, get friend to join crew, sail to next island, repeat. A very simple formula, but dear god is it addictive. The plot doesn't take a side-part to the action either, which is nice to see.
4.) Ranma 1/2 - Still one of the very best. Comedy-a-plenty is the order of the day. If you don't know what Ranma 1/2 is, I pity you.
5.) Flame of Recca - This was the first series I watched ORIGINALLY completely in Japanese. It follows the Tournament style of anime. Get some friends, go to a tournament, fight, go to the next fight, add some plot points in. Some truly inspired weapon and fight design helps make secure Flame of Recca the #5 spot.
Honourable Mentions: Rurouni Kenshin, 3x3 Eyes, Dragonball, Air Master, Lupin III, Hajime No Ippo, Azumanga Daioh, Earth Maiden Arjuna.
Then I get lazy and don't feel like reasoning my points anymore...
Movies:
1.) Transformers: The Movie
2.) Patlabor: The Movie
4.) Princess Mononoke
5.) Laputa: Castles in the Sky
Honourable Mentions: Anything Ghibli, Jin-Roh, Akira.
OVA's:
1.) Read or Die
2.) Oh! My Goddess
3.) Tenchi Muyo!
4.) Hunter X Hunter OVA 1
5.) Jungle De Ikou
Honourable Mentions: Patlabor, Ranma 1/2, Project AKO.
Soundtracks:
1.) Symphony of Evangelion
2.) Cowboy Bebop Collective Score
3.) The Vision of Escaflowne Collective Score
4.) Princess Mononoke
5.) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Honourbale Mentions: Anything Yoko Kanno worked on, any Ghibli movie OST, Shingesutan Tsukihime, Azumanga Daioh Collective Score, Evangelion Collective Score, The Transformers Till All Are One.
Manga:
1.) Bleach
2.) Naruto
3.) One Piece
4.) Berserk
5.) Rurouni Kenshin
Honourable Mentions: Battle Angel Alita, Ranma 1/2, Devil & Devil, Tenjo Tenge, Hunter X Hunter.
If you wanna know why I picked certain things in those positions, just ask and I'll let you know... if you feel like arguing with my about why I didn't include certain things, let me know and we'll have a little arguement ^_^
It's all good baby.
If you wanna do your own list, make sure it is a list of 5. Not 3, not 6.
FIVE
Note: sue me... I'm getting bored over here... trying to make some interesting threads...

ehat i want to know is why dragon ball get an honourable mension in the best series catagory, i myself didnt enjoy that at all, and yes i do like dbz do not flame me for that plz i get enouth of that at colledge.
oh and y no guyver im really enjoying that so far ( havent seen it all yet )
Ditto. Although I have seen some of Patlabor
Dragonball (Note the distinct lack of Z in the title) only got an honourable mention simply because there were series more qualified for my personal Top 5. So it gets a quick mention because it is indeed quite an excellent series to watch ^_^
Dragonball Z just got bastardised to death in America. I hate FUNimation for that. I truly do.
Like it wasn't the best series to begin with, but then they came along and edited the crap out of it and changed the target audience...
agreed, but the original movies rock IMHO,
Anyone noticing a pattern in my anime-related posts?
Excuse me for missing Bebop.... and Escaflowne.
*hiss*
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Just...its the best. EVAR. Seriously. I love this anime better than anything else in the world.
2. Cowboy Bebop
This thing just OOZES style, while still keeping loads of quirky fun-ness. Its great
3. Love Hina
Romantic comedy...the way it SHOULD be done, instead of these stupid american ways.
4. Blue Submarine #6
A great anime asking the world "Whats wrong with being different?", but in a way you wouldn't EVER expect.
5. .hack Series
Just...watch. Hard to explain, fun to watch.
EVA FOREVER!!!
My god...all of my favourite series have been played on American TV. AND RUINED! I CANNOT BELEIVE WHAT FOX DID TO ESCAFLOWNE! RAAAARRRGGGHHHH!
Mainly because I am old. And cranky.
There are 3 movies.
You are referring to Movie 2.
The 'problem' people have with the movies is that they believe that the mechs are the key part of the film. That is simply not the case. The Labors are simply a plot device or a tool used to create the world Patlabor inhabits.
Hell look at Movie 3, it had like 2 minutes of the Ingrams... tops.
That's why I like Patlabor, it's a mecha series that doesn't need to rely on the mechs to support the story *cough*GundamIsAbsoluteCrap*cough*
While I think DBZ is crap, a few Gundams are pretty good. I thought Wing was great, for its use of Characters. While the first gundam was crap though.
And in Movie #2, it didn't have much of the mechs either. Had a scene with fighter jets...thats all I saw, mech wise.
Anyway, although I am an anime fan, I don't have many of my own copies of much because money is a bit harder for me to come by. But from what I have seen, I've devised my list of top five, in no particular order.
-Cowboy Bebop
-Armitage (Poly Matrix and Dual Matrix)
-Ghost in the Shell
-Patlabor
-Akira
Knives is teh PWNage (see avatar).
Well, Im gonna go ahead and reserve judgement till after I have watched more anime. It really aggrevates me that I STILL havent seen Patlabor, Ive been meaning to do that for months now...
Good call on Mononoke.
Trigun? Hell no.
Cowboy Bebop? Yes, its stylish, but the lack of a cohesive storyline detracts points.
Dragon ball = cool, Dragon ball Manga = pwn.

Wouldn't say that. It does have one, but its hard to notice. AKA, the Julia & Vicious story.
Visions of Escaflowne - Never really got to see much...but I love Escaflowne. Bear in mind, i'm talking Japanese VoE.
Cowboy Bebop - It's good, each episode is it's own mini-story...plus it's kinda '30ish.
Hellsing - Ceras Victoria...gotta love Arkard. I love this series to death.
Trigun - It's silly and stuff but it's fun.
Battle Angel - Gally = cool
Movies:
Princess Mononoke - Ghibli. Pwn. I love this.
Escaflowne - Its Van. and the Dragon Armor
Akira - It scr00d my mind
Spirited Away - Ghibli...Good...Weird
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - I love D. He's so cool. Plus his sword owns.
1.) Transformers: The Movie
2.) Patlabor: The Movie
4.) Princess Mononoke
5.) Laputa: Castles in the Sky

I guess you're just too cool for the number 3?
- Lupin the 3rd is just downright hilarious...not sure if I really like it though
- All of the CD's that spouted from Yôko Kanno are pwn.
- And while no one may exactly approve of DBZ, it is still the most popular anime in the USA, and probably the only one, besides Transformers, that is mainstream. The rest are just *coughcultinamericacough*...lol. Hell, you can even draw ovbious parallels to something closer, CS and NS.
- I like Inuyasha, but I really haven't seen much Anime besides what's on [adult swim]
- But VHD:B is teh pwn.
Well you're entitled to your opinion, but what on earth are you doing in an anime thread, then?
...
I can't believe you didn't have NGE on the list, Inf .
Hokai, in no particular order:
!: GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)
@: Neon Genesis Evagelion
#: Inu Yasha
$: She, the Ultimate Weapon
%: Gunslinger Girl
As for movies...
!: Spirited Away
@: [1]
#: Akira
$: Vampire Hunter D
%: Metropolis
I'm not ranking them because they're very different from each other, and I like them for different reasons. They're all very different in genre and style.
[1]: I don't actually remember what it's called. It's about two guys making a documentary about the life of a famous (fictional) actress and the movies she was in. It's really well done, in that they seamlessly make transitions between her actual life and the life of her characters, with the documentary makers getting caught up in the action. Engaging, clever, and a great watch.
Smoke Nova: The Battle Angel Alita OVA was a joke. Do yourself a HUGE favour and pick up the manga. The OVA reduces this magnifecent technical opus into a 2 episode monstrosity.
Retales: I refer you to this thread. Get out.

And why has no one mentioned Scryed? (So it had one season, big deal)
Ah, that would be the one.
I really liked Cowboy Bebop. I thought Trigun was pretty cool but I have problems with those annoying female characters, one of them carries a freaking gatling gun. That's dumb. As for movies, I've only seen two: Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. My brother got the DVDs. Probably because he has a crush on some anime fanatic. Anyway, I liked Spirited Away but I thought Princess Mononoke was misleading by having the main character be a guy who can fight. Because he is such a little ****.
Just about anything else I've seen on Cartoon Network, I hated. Lupin III, which you mentioned, is crap. I saw some anime about chi powers where they fight like idiots and don't wear any shirts.
I haven't seen the series, but the movie was very funny

That would be Dragonball Z. It has its followers (for various reasons), but it isn't really in the same category as other anime.
