Since most of you missed this the first time round, i'm posting it again. This is the words of Timbo, a dev from Tremulous, as said at the end of <a href='http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=195' target='_blank'>this thread</a> on the Tremulous forums. It CLEARLY STATES they take their influence from Gloom and NOT NS, the guy says he's never even PLAYED NS.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->For what it's worth, I've never actually played Natural Selection. Half life under linux is a pain in the ****. Actually, forget the linux part.

Honestly I find these threads funny more than anything else, but I do have trouble understanding the mentality behind some of the posts I've read on various forums. Alien vs Human games are nothing new; AvP, Starcraft, Gloom, HL, Doom, Q2, Unreal etc. What is relatively new is the FPS/RTS genre of games. Technologically speaking this represents nothing groundbreaking -- it is the natural progression of gaming genres. Where NS differs is the resource system and commander mode features which have their roots firmly in RTS territory. Tremulous is quite dissimilar to NS here, but even if it weren't why would that be a problem? At the end of the day the result for the "mod consumer" is a wider variety of games to choose from -- apparently this is a bad thing. You can go round and round in circles for weeks identifying the origins of entity X from entity Y influenced by entity Z. The reality is that nothing in this world is truly original and if it were we wouldn't be making very much progress. Having said that Tremulous has nothing to do with NS, any similarities are coincidental. As already pointed out in this thread, <b>the inspiration for Tremulous lies with Gloom more than any other game/mod and I'm happy to admit that. If NS was an influence I would say so too, but it quite simply isn't.</b>

The people talking about legal action really need to be dragged down to earth. For a start, computer game modifications are not for profit -- there is nothing to be gained or lost financially before even considering legal costs. Secondly, you can't copyright an idea, only names, artwork, sounds etc. -- i.e. the actual tangible entities that make a product. Imagine if a car manufacturer claimed that legally no one else could make cars: there would be zero consumer choice and under developed automobiles to boot. Screaming "OMG OMG SUE TEHM THEY COPIUED NS!!11!!" only really serves to identify how utterly retarded you are.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sorry to disturb the thread but I search here every once-in-a-while to see if tremulous has been mentioned just because we (the Tremulous team) usually get a nice laugh out of it.

I can't really add anything to the discussion, but there are a few things I'd like to say. (Oh, and if you dont know, Im the modeller for Tremulous)

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The textures are low-res and blurry, (Also, they're plain to me) and the models LOOK low poly. (That shows a newbie/bad modeller. The trick to low-poly modelling is making the object look like it has more polys than it actually does.)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

First off, I <b>am</b> a newbie at modelling. But, the team was in need, so I picked up gmax and thought I'd contribute. Personally, I thought my models were quite good, but that could just be my ego getting in the way. (But I am wondering if you are commenting on the human player model, which right now is just the standard q3 player model called 'sarge', which was created more than 4 years ago when computers had hard times handling things such as that.) Thank you, esuna for the support anyways.

On another note, the weapon models were the first things I had done, but I was, in fact, trying to make them look square, boxy, and bulky. Which serves low-poly modelling quite well.

Secondly, our skinner is also quite new. Although he is an experienced mapper, we happened to also be short of 2d artists, (a job I still have very little skill in) and he stepped up to the plate. And, again, I see his skins as quite excellent.

Lastly, looking back on all the things I've said in the past, I regret a lot of it. Any 'new' creation is going to be taken from something else, but it is so much easier to see on the internet. We are taking an idea from many different things we think have worked in the past, just as NS did. So... I guess I'm kind of saying what most people are trying to say: "Calm down."

And if anyone wants to give us a hand, just stop by the forums and show a little of what you can do. As Timbo would say: "We're a pretty easy going bunch." <a href='http://tremulous.net' target='_blank'>http://tremulous.net</a>

They may try and copy NS - but NS shall be the one that was first.

NS shall always be the best. The classic!

I didn't mean any offence by it, sorry. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Also, I didn't know that the player model was the standard Q3 model. (I've never played Q3.) My bad. The weapon models that I've seen are very good.

As for the textures, if they weren't low-res and blurry, they'd be excellent. All they would need is a little more detail to them.

Sorry if I made anyone feel insulted. It wasn't intentional!

Also esuna, I wasn't necessarily (Spelling error, I think) saying that they were a newbie or a bad modeller. I meant that it was TYPICAL of a newbie or a bad modeller. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Alas, i seem to have deja-vu from a year ago.
    1. Tremulous is a class based deathmatch mod, where the objective is to eliminate the enemy spawn points. AKA Gloom which was around before some of you got out of nappies.
    2. Tremulous has been in 'part time' development for the best part of 4-5 years. I know Timbo in real life and unfortunately I dont think he couldnt assign 24/7 time to a mod he wanted to do for a bit of fun.

I used to play natural selection a fair bit on UK servers, but the mixture of requiring windows/steam/cheating death has basically stopped me playing it. The idea is really good, but graphically its vary dated unfortunately (onos + ladders = no).

The main reason I dont play it though is because of the community, and the 'counterstrike' disease that seems to spread everywhere (AKA the non-ability to talk coherently).

The modification looks as though it is based around NS, if it has or hasn't that does not matter.
    <a href='http://tremulous.net/screenshot.php?id=97' target='_blank'>http://tremulous.net/screenshot.php?id=97</a>
That suggests it has, judging from the textures, the blue hud, and the very infantry portal like structure on the floor.
It's a modification for a different game, they're trying to bring the NS sort of experience (Aliens, darkness, coolness) to that game and its players. To be honest if it is a NS "rip off" it would be a good thing, as it would be more publicity for NS. Either way, my opinion clearly sways towards the fact that the creators have played NS before, and like the way the game goes. Re-creating that sort of play in another modification, for another game with a different style is not ripping off. Just inpsiration. Good luck to that team is all I can say.

Y'know, if the main programmer says he's never played NS, i will take his word for it, he has no reason to lie about that.

You got to admit, it is a bit of a co-incedence that quite alot of the things look the same and are similar though Esuna. You can not overlook that. I doubt two people (Flayra + Timbo) both had the idea of the "infantry portal", as I said though it is not a rip off, but a piece of inspiration.

Also, people can lie...it's not as if he gets his tongue cut off anymore (or his fingers for typing the words).

    *shrug*

Not sure what exactly you mean by infantry teleporters. I recall that NS has structures that allow players to teleport throughout the map. We do not have those. If you're talking about the human team's spawn locations, then <b>niether</b> Flayra or Timbo came up with that idea.

As far as I know, that idea came from Gloom. (<a href='http://www.planetquake.com/teamreaction/' target='_blank'>http://www.planetquake.com/teamreaction/</a>) Go search around their website and you'll see the original q2 mod that I believe had a large influence on NS. (And Tremulous as well)

I've talked to Flayra a couple of times in the past few years.

First time was after he wrote an article for Game Developer talking about innovative mods. One of them being Gloom. Nice guy and a hard worker. Iv'e seen some of the work in NS and it's pretty incredible that it's a mod.

I also corresponded with someone that runs the Readyroom about 18 months ago. They too were very nice and even supportive about Tremulous.

I couldn't resist posting because a co-worker who is into NS told me about the thread. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

As far as the HUD. What exactly have we copied? All I can see is that its blue and has health and ammo counts. I hardly see how this is 'stealing' the 'NS sort of experience'

Hi, I'm a mapper from Tremulous..
    first off, I respect Natural Selection <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ever since I first played gloom I've loved
any game that lets you be an alien killing humans <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
However I've only recently got a copy of HL and so haven't had time to try NS out yet.
But I think its great that NS has done for the HL engine what Gloom did for Q2, and hopefully Trem can do for Q3 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'd just like to address a couple of comments if I may.
Someone was mentioning the textures used in the maps. Myself and the other Trem mappers tend to use Evillairs Evil sets (mostly 6 and 8) and Shaderlabs Majestic set.
Its not always easy finding some good sci-fi textures, and since I cant create my own I've stuck with these sets. They are the best of whats out there for creating the 'feel' I want. (eh, not that I think I'm 'settling' for them.. they are all great sets <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )

ok thats it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I look forward to trying NS soon.

Whats this? A thread lock? I'm going to have to stop sleeping if this can crop up over night.

People who I'm assuming have joined just to cause problems in this thread please either grow up or go away.

It has been stated by people in this thread and threads in the past games inspire each other, crossovers and parrellels are not uncommon and we've been through this before, and in fact we have been accused of ripping off Gloom more than once.
