In my opinion Steam is n00bz0r!!! I installed it and it stuffed up half-life (made it unstable). Its gonna be compulsory though so i wait and get the ns cache. Its better than gamespy which caused my computer to restart for no reason even though i had never launched gamespy b4. I had it installed for months then i ran it and it had no new servers so i uninstalled it and went back to cogs then noticed that my computer wasn't restarting. Anyways this reply is stupid so ignore it (i had to find somewhere to take out my anger and i chose here)
Guys, i know it's been fixed now, but if you have a Steam problem i suggest you take it to the steampowered.com forums. If you search there your problem's probably already been resolved and you shouldn't get so many people mindlessly bashing Steam because they want to fit in.
But then again, i can't really vouch for the lack of morons over there.
Its funny they made the perfect system to update its own problems, all they had to do to program steam was make sure its updatable to fix errors and give it a GUI then as they program some more of it or fix some bugs steam is able to update itself.
First of all I've NOT downloaded or played steam. What I hear from friends is that it does little more than save your server lists/help you find a suitable server for you and updates your HL.... and that its so damn buggy thats its unplayable most of the time. Now I must say I haven't read any official comment or anything on steam, but I simply don't understand is why steam was developed! I mean I use HLSW for my serverlists and I'm fine with downloading updtes from a website and WON is running fine atm as far as I can see (and I don't care what it did in the very beginning, it works now so don't fix a running system). As for that "WON didn't work inthe beginning so why should steam" well, when HL was released they needed something for MP quickly (although I still think one should finnish a program BEFORE releasing it...), but now they have a systen tahts working and they could/should take their time and finish steam or at least make its use optional, but forcing players to switch to a pre-beta version is somewhat unfair. And this "hey, what do you want it's free" mentality is kind of weird... I mean I wouldn't put it past some software companys of these days but I think first selling a game that includes MP and then charging money for using it would be more than just lame. It's not like valve is paying for the Servers or anything. So imho if they want to switch to a new system they should program first and then release not the other way round! Thanks for reading it and sorry to anyone who considers it a flame, but I had to write that...

Sierra owns WON, not Valve, and Sierra wanted to shut WON down for whatever reason, so Valve made their own server[they had to]...thingey. Steam isn't at all as buggy as your friends say. If you ask for help and in any way try to make it work, then it will work. Just like how you might have had to change your graphics to OpenGL instead of Software mode the first time you tried to run HL...
As I was messing around the other day, I decided to try out Counterstrike. Not related to this topic, but, as I wasn't playing seriously(didn't expect to win), it was actually quite fun. Related to this topic: I did it on Steam. Not a single problem. In fact, LESS problems than with WON, now that alt+tab and the Windows key doesn't bork it.

Shiriki

You haven't downloaded or played steam? Wow. So, your opinion is valid how?
It does a LOT more then save your server list, update HL automagically, auto-join servers.. It also fixes all sound problems (You can alt tab correctly, and the windows key no longer crashes HL.. EVER) and a hellacious amount of other won-related problems.
STEAM was developed because Sierra abandoned WON. Plain and simple.
What do you mean if I'd get off my lazy arse and update the damn thing? I don't have a choice! You must have missed the two updates which were recalled immediatly that actually deleted the cached game files, forcing you to redownload the games or reinstall steam altogether.
I think once steam actually works properly, it will be a great utility (except for 56kers ), but it should still be in the beta versions. Valve has no right to call steam complete at the moment. See how WON isn't closed down yet? Why don't you take a wild guess. I would be satisfied if valve just said "Alright, this is our latest beta of steam", but they said this was the official version, which forced gamers who were afraid WON was going to shut down in a few weeks to go download it.
I'm all for the concept of steam, I just think the execution was extremely poor.

I was there when EQ was released. If ANYONE remembers that, good god. Patching on a friggin OC3 took years because of the bandwith shortage. The login server was consistantly down. If you got on a server, you were one of the only four people in the world.. etc. etc. I was there for Earth and Beyond's launch. Horizons launch. SWG launch. Planetside launch. FFXI launch.
I KNOW this crap backward and forward. I KNOW that no matter how much any company plans for bandwith useage, they will have to double it to meet requirements for launch day. Steam had all this experience, and chose to ignore it. Yeah, a bad decision on their part, but one of the few.
And how is it bad for 56kers? After the initial download, 90% of updates are tiny tiny things. As in 0-100% in less then a minute on DSL. That's not backbreaking.
Steam got a bad start, a bad reputation it doesn't deserve, and a stance similar to Microsoft.. in that 15 year old, pimply faced nublets living in their parents' basements think it's "cool" to bash it. And before you flame me for THAT, I'd like to note that I'm 20, live in my parents' basement, yet pull my own weight.
I'm not talking about the first week round of updates, I'm talking a few months into being was when steam released the crap updates that deleted your steam.
Alright, I have to admit, CS and DoD and the supported mods run pretty smoothly, as they might only crash once per hour. NS on the other hand whether it be 3.0 or 2.0, it crashes 40% of the time when I join a team, 30% of the time directly after the game when the readyroom is full, and every once in a blue moon you'll get the ever so popular client 57 error which empties half of the server. I haven't tried other 3rd party mods in steam, but I'm willing to guess they aren't doing much better.
