Look! Look! I can bash steam because IT'S COOL!
Gimme a break. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Reinstalling steam would be the first item on the list, mostly because it looks like a corrupted exe or something. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
i was gonna reinstall at first but just wondered if there was another way to fix.

Oh and btw the solution to your problem is in that link.
I reinstalled instead, and it worked :/
OMG..Z0R!!11!
I hope it misses and eats Kazaa "The Virus" Lite.
I had an error almost the same as that one about 2 hrs ago. My comp got fuxored so I system restored and tried steam 5 mins ago and got the error agian. I read on the steam site, that the update last night fuxored some steams, so thats probably the problem. I just started up steam to get a ss for my error, but it works now and updated, so I guess the problem is solved... got screwed out of 2 hrs of ns playing, my life has no meaning now.

(not bashing people who have the errormaxdistance crap, just people who try steam, get one error, than decide to hate it, i respect people who come on the forums and ask for help, it means they want to learn and use a good program and not quit like an 11 year old would)

I run steam on a P3 866 with a Al-In-wonder 7500 and have never had an error with it however the stablity of the Os may take a part in it. I am running it in Windows 200 pro. and they may have written it to run in this Os orginaly. I find In most of my cases Errors happen when something goes wrong with you Os like i said or it bad code. However what i like is this<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> STEAM BASICS
* What are the system requirements for Steam?
Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
64 MB RAM
400 Mhz processor
1GB HD space (strongly recommended)
Broadband Internet connection (recommended but not required)
It is also recommended that Steam be installed on a hard disk formatted using NTFS. Fat32 drives will work, but performance will be slower.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
They wrote it work under windows 98 And they say you should install to a NTFS drive or else you will lose performane but Windows 98 only suports Fat 32... Also how can you recommend a amount fot HD space? you need a certain amount to install.

Then you got lucky and missed the two (possibly more) updates (were recalled) that deleted your steam cached files so you'd have to to a total reinstall. Other updates like this one do something wierd, such as delete server lists, cause steam to crash on startup, etc.
I'm getting to the point where if I see steam start to update, I'm going to close it immediately and wait for feedback.

No wonder you're an armory humper.
Steam got a bad start for whatever reason and has been ridiculed ever since.
If you'd get off your lazy arse and actually update the damned thing, you might see that it's one of the better ways into internet gaming. On top of that, it's <b><i>FREE</i></b>, meaning your jobless 16 year old self don't pay nuttin for it. So if you'd like to bash it and whine about how much it crashes, kindly make a competitor that doesn't do that, since you know SOOO much about this kind of stuff.
The friends list makes games fun again; you can see who's playing where, join them, and even auto-retry joining to get into those difficult servers. No tapping space then frantically double clicking hoping you beat out that n00b.
The server selection list is resizable, sortable (And supports multi-sorting, so if you sort by name, then number of players, it'll sort by number of players, but if two have the same player count, it'll then sort by name, etc), and very very customizable. You can download all your games (TFC, DOD, CS, etc.) right off the browser with no problems, as long as it's not on a wednesday night/thursday morning. It's nice for those times when you just wanna do something new. "hhmm. Haven't played TFC in a bit."
All I've seen online now is people bashing steam and saying won is god because they don't KNOW any better. Won was nice, but it's a security blanket. Once you open up your eyes, you see there's a whole nother world out there.. a nice one with lots of neat features that you're missing because you have to look "cool" by bashing a wonderful, wonderful FREE FREE FREE program.
Talesin, who claims he did play that early on, said that WON was about 10 times as bad as Steam was in it's early form. I suppose you could ask him on IRC if this is correct, I'm not 100% sure myself.
Could that be the problem ?

Stop with the flaming, jeez.
Steam, like it or not, is all we'll have next year. If you want to put your head in the sand and play on WON, be prepared to have a rude awakening in 2004 when you have to scramble to get Steam installed while everyone else in the world is downloading it. It's better to learn the nuances and bugs now, and how to fix them, than stressfully scrambling at the last minute in January so you can play NS.
Go to steampowered.com and download the 500KB minimal Steam installer. From there, you can have Steam give you the games you want, which is much faster than direct-downloading or signing up for some crappy FilePlanet UserID.
Wr0d.
WON in its infancy was incredibly inefficient, unreliable, and often times unavailable if you didn't live in one of 3 major US cities. It took at least 6 months before playing on the dreaded "Internet" was a viable option to actually playing the single player game and enjoying (in my opinion) one of the best interactive storylines for an FPS in years and years to come. Even then, you still had to be nominally close to a major city to recieve decent pings as phone dialers were still being slaughtered with 300+ pings compared to the ritzy 100- LPB's living in their metropolitan suburbia with mommy and daddy forking over the bill.
I'd say that it took WON well into a 1.5 year life existence before it could even be comparable to what Steam is now... and that's ignoring the vast featureset disparity.
Hear, hear. After cruising through much of the stuff on Steam transition on this and other forums, views pro and con etc. (and not being a developer, programmer, mapper or other 'professional' in Mods), I'm coming to this conclusion: STEAM may end up being slightly more a bad idea for NS than a good one, or (as some have said) a poor solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. These early tries and trials by players (I'm sure it's working perfectly the first time for SOME people <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> ) are laying groundwork for those (like me) that won't switch until we're absolutely forced to, to keep playing NS. For what it's worth, to all those out there struggling with it and posting their problems, thanks.
I'll try hard to make STEAM work because I love NS (though 1st impressions of 3.0 changelogs are NOT encouraging, like the spikeless lerk), but only when WON is gone forever. Since it's highly unlikely things will work the first time I'll give it a couple days, re-read forums, check out the latest bugs and fixes, etc. Maybe by that time, more bugs will have been worked out- or STEAM will have been abandoned for NS... It took me a couple weeks to iron out bugs on NS using 56K (and without All-Seeing Eye or anything) <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
But if, after trying all that and it still doesn't work (or I've had to do things that no reasonable developer should expect out of people who just want to PLAY rather than code, tweak or even hack STEAM to make it work)... ***** it. I'll just go buy HL2 and not futz around with online playing (and the occasionally twitchy systems that support it) anymore. (sigh).... Not looking forward to getting Steamed, hopefully it'll hold out 'till after New Years at least...
