but still I think it would make sense to bring it up.
What day of the week might NS be released? Will it be on a weekend when most people are home taking a break from work/school, or on the weekday when we might not be able to play the MOST possible time with it.

edit: well Doom, I bet I can find some people in India that won't know about it!
Though if it were me, I'd want to take advantage of the weekend playtime, and release on a Thursday or Wednesday so most people and their 56K paperweights would have it
Alright guys, here's what I want you to do for me...
make a list of the ICQ, AIM, Y!, MSN, commonly visited IRC channels/nicks/servers, e-mail addresses, snail mail addresses, home phone numbers, and mothers last names of every person on this forum, and when the free mod that you've spent over two years on is finished, set up a free private FTP with over 100KB/sec transfer rates with JUST the mod on it (so I don't have to look very hard) and spam the heck out of every possible way of communication you have to us. You have to. Otherwise we uhh... will do something. yeah. that's it.

and remember: friday night US release = saturday morning release in aus, which means waiting till the next monday for any dedicated servers :/

And it won't be released the day after we say it's set to ship. There needs to be some time to alert all the news sites, and let everyone know that it will be coming out on exactly 'x' day. There needs to be some time to prepare all the mirrors we'll be having for the u/l and d/l that they'll have to do. And there needs to be some time for one last, final PR blitz before release.
I recall vague mentions of a 'summer release' somewhere...

So just realease it at night in my timezone...... sometimes guys you just amaza me...
thats what most mods do, i wouldnt mind earlier tho :o
there will be MANY mirrors for it (thus you don't HAVE to go through FP)
as for when it is released, i don't care, so long as it is released when it is ready and not before

Ok, so they play all week, but I figure the major testing would still be weekends whem more people are free.
And as far as sending out info to all the news sites...? It's not like it's retail. Why can't it be up and ready for us forum goers who have been eagerly waiting and supporting (encouraging) you guys all along? Understandable you gotta have mirrors ready and working and all that jazz, but I don't see why we should have to WAIT on a FINISHED product just so news sites can have an article saying it WILL come out... I mean all that does is get everyone downloading it at the same time causing traffic! EEP! No matter how many mirrors you have, it's going to be a big mod... and a long wait and! and! I forgot where I was going.
So yeah, what's with the news sites thing? <---- Serious question that at the time wanted answered.
And looking back on this post, it does sound snobbish or something. I apologize to everyone who read it.
And why are the forums special? There are probably a good bit of peoplew ho want it just as bad as most of the people on the forums do who don't check the site/forum 30 times a day.
1. Flayra will announce that the code is gold and now frozen (no software changes to be made). This starts a one week timer.
2. The final installation packages for Win32 (exe) and Linux (tarball) will be built.
3. A special Preview installer will be created (with some anti-leak measures) which will be used for PR with news sites and magazines.
4. NS' release date is announced to the world. During the next week after gold (and that could be 5-7 days, depending on when the code went gold), we will be sending out PR to as many websites as possible. This means information, screenshots, short movies, the NS Trailer, special exclusives, etc. Certain organizations will be able to play preview copies with us and post articles. Pretty much a news media blitz.
5. 24-hours prior to full release, the Linux dedicated server installer will be uploaded to the mirrors for server ops.
6. Finally, the Win32 installer will be uploaded to all the mirrors and the game is released to the world. The time of day for this is still being discussed.
Other random questions you might have answered below:
- Yes, there will be an IRC party.
- Yes, there are British and European file mirrors
- Yes, there are Australian and NZ file mirrors
- No, it will not be an exclusive download from FilePlanet (although it will be on quite a few of their public mirrors, as well as the ultra-fast Private servers)
- It will be just under 100MB in size for either installer
- Yes, the manual will be available before release
- Yes, we have further plans not shown above.
I think that should sum it all up nicely.
Unkown Menace didn't come out because the guy in charge thought he could get everything uploaded before he had to leave on vacation. Now that he is back there still doing things with the game what there doing with it I have no idea.
