    1. Flayra will announce that the code is gold and now frozen (no software changes to be made). This starts a one week timer.
    2. The final installation packages for Win32 (exe) and Linux (tarball) will be built.
    3. A special Preview installer will be created (with some anti-leak measures) which will be used for PR with news sites and magazines.
    4. NS' release date is announced to the world. During the next week after gold (and that could be 5-7 days, depending on when the code went gold), we will be sending out PR to as many websites as possible. This means information, screenshots, short movies, the NS Trailer, special exclusives, etc. Certain organizations will be able to play preview copies with us and post articles. Pretty much a news media blitz.
    5. 24-hours prior to full release, the Linux dedicated server installer will be uploaded to the mirrors for server ops.
    6. Finally, the Win32 installer will be uploaded to all the mirrors and the game is released to the world. The time of day for this is still being discussed.

Other random questions you might have answered below:

    - Yes, there will be an IRC party.
    - Yes, there are British and European file mirrors
    - Yes, there are Australian and NZ file mirrors
    - No, it will not be an exclusive download from FilePlanet (although it will be on quite a few of their public mirrors, as well as the ultra-fast Private servers)
    - It will be just under 100MB in size for either installer
    - Yes, the manual will be available before release
    - Yes, we have further plans not shown above.

I think that should sum it all up nicely.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

And why are the forums special? There are probably a good bit of peoplew ho want it just as bad as most of the people on the forums do who don't check the site/forum 30 times a day.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yeah I know they have been working on it for a long time, and really hard.  I'm not saying NOT to brag about it to all the major game sites and let the world know.  I just wanted to know what was going to happen with the news sites-how it was going to happen.  I wasn't trying to say "why bother, what's the big deal?"

And as far as forum goers being special- well, anyone can want something. But those who really get into it, enjoy the front line stories and give them a REASON to make the mod in the first place- I just thought it'd be a nice treat.  Though when I posted that I hadn't thought about possible leakage or such, nor did I actually expect them to give us dibs.

Oh, and thanks Monse!  I'm well informed now =P

Why the huge media blitz?  I've heard talk of Flayra loving his fanbase and wanting to do something special for them, but it was logistically impossible.  So instead of releasing to them first (which I would assume is the only way...) , he releases to a bunch of websites that already know about and cover NS?  My only issue with this is, that NS needs no PR blitz.  Everyone already knows about it, and is heralding it.  I refer to the "HL's last big splash" post.  There's no need for the websites to make the fan mob more hungry and ornery.  Hell even Penny Arcade was talking about it.

So I ask, why not just release to everyone on the same day?  There would be more servers, sooner.  The fans would be less rabid, the websites would get it at the same time, post a story or something the next day, and the mod would already be availible for download (and past the innevitable 980-bytes-per-second-because-everyone-is-getting-the-mod-after-release phase), instead of those people who read the article ending up asking on the forums and getting a "when it's done".

Sure there are people that don't know about NS.  There will forever be.  But as the internet is structured, those who are interested in playing a game like this, have found it or know where to look.  And unless Flayra is fearing a huge feedback of negative response, which is absurd given the time spent on the mod, the quality of the graphics (lv 1 movie... *droooool*), and the attention to balance, then a release to fans and PR websites at the same time can only help the mod.

Just my thoughts, feel free to flame, no offence to anyone intended here. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Okay, if NS is released the day it is set in gold, and everybody rushes to get it- what would be the point? Wouldn't it take a while to get the servers up and I admit that it would be cool to mess with the training while we wait, but it's not worth the loss in publicity.

But on the other hand, it wouldn't make that much of a difference because we all know that NS is going to make a HUGE splash and in time EVERYBODY who is into half-life will know about it.

Oh I just got quesy that "set in gold" comment got me excited and my adrenalin pulsed and left me light headed. <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

Working on these. So far I have talked to some Brazilian and Argentinian ones.

They have been contacted, but no response yet.

You would think from the quantity of PR sent out over the past year that lots of people would know about NS. But I've gotten responses from Server Mirror admins (who's job is to keep up with games), saying 'NS whaaaaa?'. It's humbling, but true; hype is the way to go, and having a couple straight days of super PR blitz will help overcome this hopefully.

Think of it like Christmas - come December, you know you will be getting presents in a few days. It heightens the anticipation and gets you focussed...

I think I'd have to disagree with you on the size of the fan base. Yes, there's a lot of fans out there, but releasing NS to media outlets in advance is a good idea, I think. The more popular this mod is, the more rewarding the NS team's work will have been. (If you choose to measure it that way, anyway.) I'm going to compare NS to the immortal Counter-Strike despite the fact that they'll 'behave' differently in terms of popularity after the release date... it took a while for CS to gain momentum. Up until about Beta 7 or so (as my memory serves, feel free to correct me), CS wasn't THAT popular. It exploded a while after that, but the point is that CS was in development and public beta testing for a looong time before it got popular. The NS crew, it appears, would rather have their mod "explode" right when it goes public. And I don't blame them.

Also, since I've already mentioned CS, let me just say that most CS players seem EXTREMELY hesitant to play any mod that might displace their beloved Counter-Strike. I've posted about NS on several message boards and was greeted with replies like "ehhh, doesn't look like that great." or "but the HL engine looks like ###." Basically all the responses have as an underlying statement "I don' wanna stop playing CS." A big media hype will probably help dislodge some CS players from their rigid adherance to that game, and get more seasoned FPS players under NS's fanbase.

That was a lot longer than I wanted it to be, but oh well, c'est la vie.

I totally agree with all of that Frodo, nicely put. I see the argument for releasing to fans first, but can you imagine what would happen if you tried? You would either have to give it to all of your mirrors, and then tell them not to link to it, so your 'regulars' can get it first, or you would have to have all of the 'regulars' downloading from one location, which would annoy people because of slow download speeds.
  • ZawathZawath Join Date: 2002-07-28 Member: 1020Members
Well, they could just release it for everyone at the same time. People can read those previews/reviews after the release too.
  • SuperMunchkinSuperMunchkin Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1364Members
The only real question I would have about the release details at this point is this:

Why not have the mod available for DL before the media blitz?  Rather than saying
"Here's something really cool, it'll be here in a few days", why not:
"Wow this really cool mod is available NOW! WOOT!"

Or is it just that getting all the mirrors and such setup will take long enough that you'll have time to hype it up?
