<div class="IPBDescription">I learned from StarCraft</div> Ok, so I exagerate a little, but you can learn a lot about both the Frontiersman (Terran campaig) and Kharaa (Zerg campaign) play from there. OK, so it wont teach you how to fight better, but it will help you understand the game, and about <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> ing and upgrades etc.
Always makes me wonder if one day there'll be a protoss equivalant in NS.

NS also kind of reminds me of X-com, especially the 'alien base' and 'terror' missions, upgrades were also on a more personal level.
BTW a third "race" isn't possible (sadly), because of engine limitations <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sadly, Bo is right. The HL engine only allows for 32 weapons, and NS uses 28 of said weapons, and it seriously bogs the system if you put in more weapons. NS already is bushing the model amounts in HL(no limit, but the engine starts dying when too many get on screen), and the decal amounts(most other games/mods like TFC, CS, and the such, can only accumulate 1500-2000 decals a game, while NS reaches 4096, the limit, quite easily. This just means that the decals will be deleted once the limit is reached.
Not to mention, if they added another race, I personally believe it'd make the game much too complicated to include it as a FPS.
to bad its not ever gonna happen.
Would it be easy to port ns to another engine ? that would maybe alow more features ? or would this also be impossible ?
I was largely suggesting that its a great game, and people should buy it )seeing as its so cheap) to help them understand the game. And becase its so fun to play. Seeing the influences (like starcraft) on a creation (such as NS) often help understand them better. I wouldnt say NS reminds me of X-COM much at all. StarCraft mostly, then Space Hulk with a tough of Aliens. X-COM - I can see why, but it just doesnt feel very XCOMy.
Yeah, it's a bit far-fetched but I just get the same.. uncomfortable feeling while playing it.
Btw, can't HL2 do HL1 mods? That could be a good starting point. I recall seeing something like that in the sourcecode.... I saw at.. my friends house, yeah that's it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
AFAIK HL2 cannot do HL1 mods. This is not comimng from any official documentation; I think it is only logical to assume the worst. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Porting a mod from an entirely different engine? With different pre-scripted events, interface, etc... Hmm. Maybe there will be a conversion, or possibly even a "HL1 support" mode, (Similar to XP's compatibility mode, only more FUNCTIONAL,) that would run NS.
In either case, there is NO WAY ns is going to just die with release of HL2. There will certainly be an underground, and, later, an official version of NS 3 for HL2 available.
As for the source code, if you can see mod support from just looking at it you are some programmer. However anyone who endorces the spread of the now useless 3rd of HL2 code stolen from Valve deserves a slow and painful death. Money, time, and (most importantly,) release dates, have been lost and persponed respectively.
And judging from the leaked build (<-- didn't download this one), HL2 was far from being finished anyway..
BTW, the code is pretty easy to read, everything's labeled
and now for the ontopic part:
wouldn't changing engines mean that whole chunks of the code and lowpoly/lowdefinition art & maps become, well, useless?
Flayra would be better off programming a totally new version of NS, NS2 or something
We are on NS 3 already...
Good to know you didn't touch the code. What was it in? C#? C++? I dont know these days.
Going OnT (Well, OT = Off...) again,
Er... yes. Changing engine does mean all other worse stuff is no longer useable. Doom 2 did not use Doom 1 maps, Dune 2000 was not even close to Dune 2, which was not even the same Genre as Dune 1...

Hee hee.
yeah, but it's NS1 v3.0 =)
The code is in c++
Going OnT (or OT?)
Doom1 vs Doom2 is a bad example =) I mean, doom1 = doom2 except for the supershottie <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Are there any plans for a "new" NS? looking at the fps I get with NS, I think a non-HL mod really is in order... It's based on Quake1 for crying out loud! Quake can't handle large areas...
Going OT again:
I once owned a dog that was smarter than you <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
wouldent ns be so damn cool with graphics like that OmG!....exept we would all have to by radeon 9800 pro's to run Ns then lol.
Considering the engine limitations the Quake1 <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> engine has, maybe NS should move on.. but not before another reliable MOD-platform like HL comes along.
HL2? only time can tell.
I wouldn't have blind faith in Valve, it's only their second game
...
NS should be a mod for duke-4-ever!!!!11eleven <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
why do so many people talk about extra races or compare this game to starcraft? yes its marines vs aliens but -- i mean -- c'mon.... "protoss race protoss-like race blah blah blah" I just think all that is a bunch of rubbish. the NS team can always ask for the hl2 modding stuff they need and go to work like the cs team has been doing. then agian ns isn't one of valve's babies.... so who knows....
Maybe I'll try coding a mod when Valve's SDK is available <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I have no experience whatsoever, but it would be a learning experience <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Besides, modifing the -Quake- source wasn't that hard, C's alot like BASIC
(OMG smiley spam? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> )
Whenever I have to describe NS, I do something like this. "Think Starcraft. Now think Space Hulk. Now think multiplayer FPS. That's NS."

Sorry to jump posts a bit, but I want to continue.
NS 1 v3? Hmm. Fair enough. Still same game really, (compared to Quake Vs Quake III,) but you must admit differences are substantial, esp NS:C.
NS Based on Q1? How? It is part of the HL engine? Or have I missed something somwhere?
And OT once more;
I bet you taught it everything you know. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Evil humans maybe.
OT:
Well it's more like NS1 -beta- 3. a lot can get added in newer betas.
I remember playing CS beta1 (I think it was 1?), walking around in a crappy map (cs_desert) and when you were out of ammo.. you died, because there was no knife.
What, didn't you know? Flayra = Teh Carmack!!!11 <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
NS may not be part of HL, but it still is a HL mod, thus running on top of the HL-engine and that limits it in various ways..
