Well, heres the popularity of NS:C to NS at 5:30PM today...
I actually like NS:C more then NS regular. Much more fun and addictive. Theres also so many possibilities with the upgrades...

(if you dont understand this picture look at the map name then players. Co_maps dominate)

I think it's just because it's a new kind of NS, so it's more fun to people who have been playing the RTS for a year

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but one of the main reasons why people are playing NS:C more than regular NS is because between the bugged Turrets/OC's and the insanely high pings, it's not much fun to play regular NS right now. So we bear through it with NS:C.

IMHO, NS:C is fun for a game or two and then it quickly becomes boring. A couple maps are no fun at all because the hive room ceilings are so tall and wide open that marines JP ASAP and own the hive (Pulse being the worse offender, I think).

    to clear thing up
combat is a map type game mode, much like cs where de_ means disarm the bomb
most of the servers are running co_ maps because combat (in the ops' opinion) needs the most work

and the fact that beta-ns:normal is frying cpus left and right
  • niaccurshiniaccurshi Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11629Members, Constellation
That and the vet servers are for use for scrims only, so obviously any servers saying VET are empty as no-one is scrimming.

Well, it basically boils down to which version is better. If combat is funner than regular, than it deserves to get played more. It all depends on how gameplay is, so we can only let the regular player decide.

I agree on that. Combat isn't taking over.

I am actually happy for combat. Now people from CS can go to combat and players who want to enjoy strategy and good teamplay can stick to NS. My first FPS game that I was hooked up was DoD when it was 2.0. At the time tactics was great part of the game. Then they tuned it and DoD changed to CS clone. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now NS is the only strategy game. This mod has different units, different styles to win with each unit type and every game is different (when there is teamplay). <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

In NS you can build things and change map balance by moving CC or creating outposts with PGs. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I just love moments as alien when there is lerk doing umbra, gorg healing and rest of the team is clearing off marines. Teamwork feels wonderful. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

From what I understand NS:C maps wont come into rotation unless the amount of players is below a set limit (say 12). So if the server has 11 or less people, it will automatically go to a combat map.

Combat is made for cheap thrills and quick fun. And that's all you're going to get out of NS when there are less than 12 players. You can't expect nor get an epic or even enjoyable battle one a classic NS style map with a small amount of players, I'm sure everyone agrees this and has experienced small games and how non eventful and lethargic they are.

During these times when the server playerbase diminshes, why not switch to combat? It'll keep the people occupied in the mean time. As long as they're occupied and don't leave, the server will stay relatively full, and people will be encouraged to join. After enough join.. A real, honest mans game of NS starts.

It'll also make a the real, normal mode of NS like a treat, people will respect it more if it becomes more rare. After 20 minutes or so of goofing off, with that "out of their system," they'll be ready for a real, focused, serious game. And now since you never know when you'll end up playing a mindless game of combat next, you'll really want to try since it might be the first and last real NS game you can play in the next hour or so.

If used in moderation like mentioned above, who can argue Combat isn't a great idea? It would keep the servers full by not boring them with meaningless RTS style games when the servers have only 8 players, and give people a new respect for the real NS. And theres always map votes..

NS:C is good for a few fights, but it gets old fast and you want to go back to NS for the thrill.
The only reasons (which have been stated here) why NS:C is taking the main amount of ppl right now
is the fact that there were some issues with lag, most have been fixed. Also, don't forget that
the VETs have all just been updated with new
clan players, this influx of new blood to the PT team are all new to
NS 3.0 and we the CM members who have been PTing for a while now,
have played it ALOT, each new build we come back, play it for a few
days and then look for bugs.
The new Vets are out for the fun right now and are still getting
    use to the new gameplay.
NS:C is great but its not NS, and it can become boring quickly.

NS will always rule as number 1 and the servers that will host NS
and NS:C will do the best when 3.0 comes out.

The main reason people aren't playing NS classic is because it lags like a mother after about 9 minutes of play.

    But if that's resolved in 3.0a i'll be all over it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I expect when NS 3.0 is released to the public, almost all servers will be running Combat only, and this is perfectly understandable. Everyone wants to try the new gamemode!

After playing a few months of Combat myself however, I find myself wanting to throw regular NS back into the mix. So after a few months I suspect all servers will be running both modes.
