Well lets think about it this way... If NS:C takes over ( I mean in 4 months all the servers are still running it) Then its obviously a more enjoyable experience to people and if the clanners who don't like it can just as easily have their own clan match's and servers in NS regular. I believe this will give us choice because NS is all about that whole Clan scene with the working together and yadda yadda While from the looks of NS:C there will still be Teamwork but still the heroic Rambo can have some fun... This can only be good its just adding more choice to the game and more choice means more players.
Guys, don't believe the crap you hear from otheres, NS:C is only the most popular mode right now in beta testing because regular NS is laggy, buggy as hell, and has NO BALANCE WHATSOEVER.

The primary reason combat is so very popular among testers had to do with everyone averaging 400+ ping in NS as opposed to ~100 ping in combat, even on the same server. Now I see more NS games, but still not as many as combat, but I'd bet it's mostly due to remaining bugs and major balance issues that are still more common in NS than combat. Both modes are much closer to being ready than they were. Combat is very fun, highly playable, and getting much more balanced each version. NS is getting much less buggy each version, but still has a bit to go before balance can be addressed. Not much though, and it is much more fun to play than one version ago.
I still don't understand the worry about combat "taking over". There are a lot of games out there, and everyone is free to choose the ones they find most enjoyable. Combat mode simply adds another choice for NS players. Those who like NS as is are still free to play a newer better version of it, while people who want to play a similar game with more tactics and less strategy are free to do so. And people like me who very much enjoy both modes can switch between them just by changing servers or map voting. They compliment each other well, since NS really doesn't play well with very small teams, while combat gets crowded with larger teams. Why is it wrong to give people more options, particularly if both options are good? Why can't the devs make whatever alternate game types they want to play? Someone please explain to me how anyone is being hurt and/or how anyone is doing anything wrong. I just don't understand what the problem is at all.
One reason why everyone was concentrating on NS:Combat for a long time was that NS: Classic's commander mode was screwed up, and made it rather impossible to play a proper game on. That seems to have been fixed now.
Either way, both modes will be enhanced, and when they are good enough 2.1 will be released. No sooner or later.
Just stopped playing a minute ago, and all but one CM server was full. Every combat server was full, and all but one NS server was full. I started in the empty server, which promptly began to fill. Now that things work moderately well, both are getting lots of play time. NS is still a little buggier than combat, so combat still tends to fill faster, but I'm pretty sure that even if it was something to worry about, it won't be a problem.
Just think of Combat as NS-lite. It is fun. There will be servers dedicated to it. But it will still just be NS-lite. It is a great game to play when you don't have the time to play a full game of NS but still want to waste a few aliens before class.
Think of NS-C as the icing on the cake. Its sweet and compliments NS well. But it is no replacement for NS.

In 30 mins everyone levels to 10 and everyone is on a level playfield. It takes some coordination to work around these obstacles to pull a win. So I wouldn't really call it a quick fix for NS.
Anyway, like Forlorn and others said, co is being played cause well ns is bugged at the moment.
Combat is a map based/player# based playmode. You don't set the server to "combat" mode. They are all in co_maps like de_maps in CS. Do you see de_only map servers? No, so settle down. Combat is unplayable with more than 14 players (the maps are really small) so you're 22 player server that is always full may never see combat until the server empties out. Check the changelog in the stickied topic it details how combat mode and ns mode will trigger on a server.
ok, since i just played 4 hours of NS:C... here's the low down...
once you get the hang of the map, hang of the upgrades, and hang of the pwnage... it kinda gets boring.
granted, it still has some bugs, it still has some quirks, and 90% of you won't play 4-hours straight of NS:C....
don't get me wrong, it's awsome, its fun, its challenging, but it will never replace our beloved original NS... i'm itching for a game of classic... and none of the servers have people/the maps running right now... you know how frustrating that is?
I've never been 100% sure about combat all the way from the start. It is unlikely I'll really bother with it because I play NS for the RTS component. Without that I really don't see myself being very interested.
I just hope that combat doesn't take away from the classic modes balance/tweaking time :/ Which really is all I want from 2.1
Dela: on a weekday, all you can do is pray for a miracle, that's the only way you'll find a large game of normal ns. On the weekend there is quite a bit more players, and usually you can play a full game (though I don't find them fun at all with the current bugs).
People who know knothing: shuttup. Plain and simple, quit your whining and complaining. Flay, Max, and the gang are doing an awesome job fixing a ton of stuff. Just because the onos/fade issues haven't been completely addressed doesn't mean nothing is getting done. More is getting done than you seem to undertand. Fixing major bugs >> tweaking balance issues.
Combat ... what can I say. I love it right now. I don't think people understand the actual strategy involved in combat. Like what is needed for one side to win in a game that is over ten minutes. Selecting your upgrades based on what is happening in the game is a big part, if you choose poorly, you will be hurting. (no armor one? gg, you're going to die very quickly)
Will combat take over? I don't really think so. While it has more diversity than it seems on the surface, it's still just constant fighting and that can get quite old. Classic NS offers too much play variety to be outdone by combat. And I really don't see combat as being that noob friendly to be honest. If you have no clue what does what, you will not do well. All in all, combat is very fun. But it's just something to play for a little while (or long while right now ), it won't replace classic ns. If it does, then that will be a sad day indeed.
I don't think combat will dominate. Sure it will be fun for a break from hairpulling that commanding pubs is, I came to NS for NS, though I may enjoy the dirrivitive, It can't and won't replace NS as it is now.
1. That quiz sucks, the answers you can choose didnt even go near for what i would have answered. Only one or two "good" answers, and the rest being mocking or somehow other "lame".
2. Its still in beta, do the worrying when its out to the public.

QUOTE (CommunistWithAGun @ Nov 25 2003, 03:32 AM)

I came to NS for NS

I think this is an important point. What brought players to NS in the first place? People who like NS are people who like strategy. I never played much of any FPS, I didn't like Counter-Strike, and I only had Half-Life at all because of some friend's LANs. I'm a strategy/rpg gamer. Then I play NS at a LAN party one day, and I'm completely blown away, amazed that they could possibly do what they did with the Half-Life engine of all things. Instant addiction. Why? Because it was a good shooter? No way. I've played plenty of "good" shooters like CS, and been completely bored out of my mind. It was because there was no way to be bored. Every fight included strategic thinking as well as tactical manouvering as well as twitch shooter skills. It was the first and only shooter that could hook me, because it was so much more than a shooter.
This is not going to change just because of the existance of combat mode. The fundamental reason people choose NS over other mods is strategy. Combat mode will be played, because even combat mode has more strategy than CS. But it will not take over, because the reason people came to NS in the first place is still part of standard NS, and much less a part of combat. And combat mode is likely to bring in more players by including the ones who don't care as much about strategy, but like a shooter with much more tactics than your average mod, with a little strategic twist thown in. Far from taking over, I believe that combat mode, along with the new and improved NS 2.1, will increase the number of people willing to try out NS and get past the point where it looks like mass confusion. Wait and see. I think you'll like it.
The whole idea is for people other than you guys who already play tons of ns to enjoy combat, and then draw them into NS because they want to try where it came from. That's the goal. I believe it will accomplish that goal.
The servers are split right now, but they won't always be that way. People are playing *plenty* of NS now that some of the bugs have been sorted out, but lag and onos/fade issues do tend to limit the enjoyment of playing...as Forlorn has said.
I really don't think combat will take over because that isn't its purpose, it's meant to be played along with NS, and when it is played like this it works well, it's a nice break. I also wouldn't listen to these people that are naysaying combat as boring...it *is* repetative, but then there is something about it which keeps it from being boring after the first few go's. I've been playing combat since the beta's were opened to CM's, and I've not tired of it once, only tired of certain bugs. In actuallity it's a very balanced game that can go either way at any time...infact the real problem on the servers right now is that things are so balanced, it seems, that it's very hard to end the games at all. Once that is sorted out, then I'm sure combat will be a popular and quick game.
Combat has a decent deal of strategy for it's game by the way. It's not like it's all been taken out, there's a lot of things to consider, your upgrade route for instance...do you want to be a super skulk? Do you want to be a killer onos (don't laugh)? A healer support class? A guerrila unit? In each case you have to choose your abilities quite carefully for a while! As marines it's a little easier to take your routes, but then you have to adapt to the aliens. If they're taking cloaking, then you need to counter it...if they're taking focus you need to counter that. Taking the wrong first or second upgrade can be catastrophic if you're not smart.
But all in all, teamwork is still there. A team of level 10 rambo marines don't end the game, they make it last longer. A group of marines, one in a HA, two in JP's, all with welders, another marine with HA and scan...this team moving along together are hard to take down, and can end the game! There is plenty of work that needs to be done rather than just mindless killing and ramboing...just because superskulks are made, it doesn't mean they can kill a group of 5 marines of the same level (not always anyway), but 4 super skulks will rip through a whole base of marines.
But I know which version I prefer to play
right now i think its bugs first, balance later. Theres some bugs that will affect balance which i think is the reason for this. NS:C can be addicting.

At the moment, combat is suffering from long 30-40 min stalemates (not as long as reguler NS).
Check the changelog in the stickied topic it details how combat mode and ns mode will trigger on a server.
once you get the hang of the map, hang of the upgrades, and hang of the pwnage... it kinda gets boring.
granted, it still has some bugs, it still has some quirks, and 90% of you won't play 4-hours straight of NS:C....
don't get me wrong, it's awsome, its fun, its challenging, but it will never replace our beloved original NS... i'm itching for a game of classic... and none of the servers have people/the maps running right now... you know how frustrating that is?
I just hope that combat doesn't take away from the classic modes balance/tweaking time :/ Which really is all I want from 2.1
People who know knothing: shuttup.
2. Its still in beta, do the worrying when its out to the public.
