Automatic Compile

<div class="IPBDescription">Got FTP?</div> G'day all

Ever been annoyed because you're sitting, waiting for hlvis to finish?
Ever wanted to do other stuff while ur maps compiling?

If I get a positive enough response to this, I will be setting up a service on my domain where users can upload their maps and any extra wads they need (I have most of the WADs, including ns2.wad).

Once or twice a day (you can also request an immediate build), the map will be compiled and reuploaded to the domain.
Oh, and you will need to upload the files needed to compile (custom batch compile scripts are allowable) thru the FTP user i set up.

So what d'you think all?

If there a windows version for that, I can just let cpu 1 do all the work and set a limit of 50% on cpu 0 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

But how many ppl really use them?

I'm offering to let ppl who, for any reason, can't compile their own map, have it compiled on my render/compile farm, or just to save time.

    <-- I use them occasionally

    *sigh*

I have long felt that I owe something to the mapping community, and when I heard LeMort complaining about compile times, I thought it was time to give something back, but if you all feel that way...

You may want to check around (I.E. run a search on collective.valve-erc.com) and see if you can find anything about a remote compile system. Someone at one point ran a setup similar to what you were talking about.... except they put a whole ton of work into automating the system then released all that code when they quit doing it. Basically the system allowed them to moderate usage, moderate membership, and utilize the system when no one was there to direct it. The idea that you have at the moment would be kind of problematic since "immediate compile" would be everyone's preference. Sorry I don't have the link for you, but you may want to check into it.

Honestly there are times I wish we could form a mapper's guild, pitch in on monthly fees for a server farm like this, and get not only faster compiles but the ability to back up maps. Unfortunately monthly dues there would be in the hundreds to rent something that can serve more than ten mappers or so.

Well, I'd look it up, but I've always preferred coding stuff from scratch myself.
Until I get some more positive responses, I guess i'll just keep working on my ns_homeworld

I like the idea. It is easier than to find a friend who would be only to compile a map for you. FTP works on every network configuration and the users can use it like they use their own hard disk. (Batch files, textures, etc)
I am not building any maps, but if I did I would use it for final/beta compiles!

May I also jump in with the Remote Compile System thing - the URL is <a href='http://rcs.valve-erc.com' target='_blank'>http://rcs.valve-erc.com</a> and it was a wonderful service. If someone has the power to run one it would be great...

MonsE used to use one of the mainframes at his work to compile maps for people. He called it SHODAN. There's a screenshot of it in the marine spawn on ns_nothing.

He wasn't willing to set up an automated system for fear of abuse.

Yes, I've thought a lot about abuse, especially since i'm giving support for custom batch compiler files, but I can write tools to parse the files, check for potentially dangerous commands and, of course, run the compiles as a user with the bare minimum of authorisation.

First off I must say this is a good idea, but its realy not vary nices for ppl to blow down a guy that just wonts to help, not every one has "elite" comps like some of you but they wont to make maps. The thing that holds them back is compiling them. Give this guy a chance, because I dont see others saying they well put money and time into compiling maps for ppl.

Now that thats over, if you didnt wont to have problems with expoiting your systeam, you could have a web interface to set up the compile rather them use the batch compile setup files. RCS seamed like a good system, I wasnt into mapping like i am now when i first found it, and now that its closed down i wont know.

Keep at it this could be a realy good thing, there are just some ppl that are a little full of them selves to let ppl help them. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
