What's the tourny standard in this case and what do you think?

Matches are played 6v6 but some say 8v8 or 7v7 is better.

    It's somewhere around that though.

agreed, the best number is 6v6 for most levels, although sometimes a good 12v12 can be very fun. It all depends whos playing it.

ideally somewhere between 6v6 - 8v8 as people have already said.

anythin above that and the res model kicks aliens in the face :/

i say 8vs8 or 9vs9 on normal publics. marines tend to loose too often otherwise. 2 skilled and 4 "normal" rines just can't do anything against a skilled onos. same applies to 2+ oni against ha. the only problem is that marine res are used for upgrades and buildings while "nearly" all alien res flow into the war machinery. additionally onos regen is another problem...

Most fun for me is 16-18 player servers.

7 or 8. AT 6 or below, res model benefits moreens. At more then 9, it kills the aliens.

6vs6 for matches or pickups , 7vs7 for pickups or pub games , 8vs8 for pub games. 7vs7 is the funniest , imho.

What you seem to forget is that aliens pay for upgrades at each spawn (anywhere from 2-6 res) and aliens also have to pay 30-90 res for the chambers and 50-100 res for hives. So while the outlay may be less for aliens that are solely fighting, it still costs a significant amount for upgrades.

7v7 games are good scrim size games and I LOVE huge games it really feels like that was the way NS was supposed to be huge game not like 5 marines fighting five aliens...this is a WAR !!! RAWR

I think 7v7 is most balanced.

6v6 scrims are cool, but may be overpowered in the aliens favor ever so slightly. I gotta try a 7v7 scrim sometime.

    I like to play 1on1s, if the alien dont rushes ur base at teh beginning it can be fun, especially with noobs on ur homelan <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Of course the true balance is the ability of the players involved, since several skilled players, though outnumbered, can rampage through a horde of lesser players.

However, thats more of a balance issue rather than what makes best tourney play.

6v6 gets a bit dicy on the marine side: there just aren't enough people around to get much done. Same goes for the kharaa, to a lesser extent. It's still fun tho.

8v8 and up is at the other extreme: there are players all over the place, plus the balance (espescially res costs) get rather wonky. I wouldn't recommend even playing on any server that is 9v9 or more.

7v7 is the happy medium. Go with that.

(note for league play: sometimes it's hard enough to get 6 players off their duffs and have them show up on time for a match, let alone 7 or 8)

Anything abovt 8v8 is hugely in favor of the marines because of dirt cheap upgrades from the arms lab (IT SHOULD BE PROPORTIONAL TO THE SIZE OF THE MARINE TEAM!!!) and the rate at which aliens get res.

8vs8 is about right on the servers I play on, though I guess it can vary depending on whom your playing with and on what server.

For non-stop action, a 12 vs 12 is the way to go, but dont come in complaining about balance because unless you kill quite a bit and cap a lot of res nodes, Aliens are quite screwed unless they are highly coordinated and highly skilled.

In my experience, the more the better. Like, 12v12. I always looks for the public server with the largest even number (Usually 14 or 16, sometimes upwards of 20). If it does in fact have an even number of people, I go marines (since they're technically down a player in the field, having a man in the chair).

Sure, there's less res to go around, but there's a lot more action. Fights happen between squads, aliens don't operate alone, and generally, i think, it's a more fun experience to play on a huge server.

    Try it some time.

I <b>love</b> 12v12 games, especially when they start going well for your side. I remember I looked at the scoreboard and our whole team was heavies. Even the comm jumped out the chair led the final attack. He got devoured because he walked in first but the feeling that comes with a good, hard earned victory owned <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
