Well I just saw it, and woot, it pwns. Very very stylish, very very cool.
I loved the music too, as Zig said it was spot on. Probably the best part w/ the music was in the uh.. teahouse? I guess. Also enjoyed the enormous amount of blood (made things seem more real) and the numerous lost limbs.
But the absolute coolest thing is that none of it was CG. Woot!
Only things to dislike is that in a few places the pacing is a bit too slow, but Tarantino is like that. One part, however, that I absolutely did not care for was the anime scene. It was good quality and all, but it just felt way too out of place. It was also way, way too long. 2-3 Minutes would have been fine, but somewhere around 20? No thanks...

The anime scene was a brilliant parody (and saved time to find child actors and throwaway characters) to hint at the upcoming carange in the Blue Tea Leaves. The focus on a massive montage of violence actually worked out pretty well, I thought.

I'm glad I never had any of this caring about age crap when I was a kid.I mean I remember buying tickets to R-rated movies, by myself, all the time when I was like.. 10. no problems whatsoever...
Kill Bill was cool, but I'm totally baffled as to why the critics are loving it too. I'm a huge action movie fan and i don't see how Kill Bill is substantially different than critically hated movies like the Mummy Returns or Bad Boys 2 (both of which i liked a lot). Those movies are action fests with very tiny plots and mediocre storylines, too. It's as if to make a succesful action movie loved by critics, you need to just focus A LOT on "style" and not even try to establish anything with substance. Then, tada, critics will herald it as a brilliant fun ride! Yay!

While people will say that it was done as an homage to older films and such, I would argue the most likely reason for removing the color was to lower the violence factor of the movie. Less red gushing everywhere, and thus the audience and critics don't feel guilty for watching it. Really superficial and lame, but probably the truth.
Also, i've seen LOTS of anime, and i thought the entire movie was actually a live-action anime film, from the storyline, plot, music, blood levels, etc. The dialogue was nearly non-existant in this movie, so arguing that Kill Bill is different from anime because of that ain't gonna work. Yuen Wo-Ping's fight choreography was great, it's too bad he couldn't do the same for his earlier Matrix Reloaded (the fight scenes sucked hard in Reloaded).

the color effects were HOT sh*t, in my opinion. i have no idea what you're babbling about on that one ^_^
nobody said it was an homage or nod, either.. lol
violence ratings don't matter for sh*t. tarantino could have gotten away with a LOT more than that. one reason is that the movie is a weinstien movie... another is that you don't understand the requirements for an NC17 movie. tehee ^_^

In Pulp Fiction Tarentino went into gray-scale for a few bloody scenes. Same with Resovoir Dogs and Jackie Brown. I personally think it's a reallly cool effect.
The entire anime part does seem kinda true, with the *obviously* fake gushing blood from the arm and leg and head wounds
Still, 9.5/10, and considering most movies get 8 or less on my ratings...hehe. It's a definite MUST own for me when it comes out.

This is one of those movies that some people are just simply going to refuse to see, and then when they finally see they will realize how amazingly good it was and kick themselves for not watching it in theatres. Seeing it for the thrid time tomorrow, tee hee.

The music and snowyness and atmosphere in the courtyard duel felt like it was straight out of Tenchu =P I forget which Tenchu in particular -- the first one I think. Great game series, everyone go out and rent them if you liked the movie, you'll see what I mean. =P
The Yakuza members strutting around with their katanas and masks on with that crazy music in the background felt like it was straight out of A Clockwork Orange, too... I kept expecting Alex to turn the corner and say, "Well well well, my little droogies..."
And all in all, I only felt queasy once! (one particular gurgly sound owing to a stab wound to the gut made me thankful I hadn't gotten any snacks)

Other than that everyone seems to really like it, some people don't get the anime/kung-fu references but that's too bad for them. I was actually hoping people wouldn't catch on as so I could tell everyone "I told you so" later, but I guess when a film's this good even the unwashed masses accept it.

And I do think it was a bit of a live-action anime parody. The insane, obviously fake uber-gore, the silly hoardes of henchmen, etc. Granted, this parody only occured in the parts of the movie involving Oren Ishii; it'll be interesting to see if Tarentino sticks to this style in the second film, or moves on to a different parody that suits the story line of that movie better.
Think about the battle with the black woman (can't remember her name). It was very low-end style weaponry, and then when The Bride fought O-Ren Ishii, it was anime style gore and samurai weapons. My guess is that when she fights the Eyepatch lady, it will be medically kind of stuff.
The fight with Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) was originally going to be an elegant affair, but apparently after QT saw a few episodes of Jackass he's made it a total smash-fest, vases and many other assorted house hold objects becoming weapons. For those that didn't get it, it is not a parody, it is Tarantino paying homage to anime/kung-fu films, he isn't "making fun" of anything. I suggest you keep that in mind and see the movie again, I have a feeling you'll appreciate it more.
And as far as it being black and white to tone down violence.......what movie were you watching dude?
Since I'm on the subject I'll shed light on the anime scene in the movie, some people have said it was too long or even "out of place" (sigh). The thing is it wasn't an accident that it was the length it was, if it was a 2 minute scene of animation it would just strike the audiance as drastic and everything would seem blatent in it, there's a reason he uses a smooth transition into it. There is a lot of subtle things in that scene that would be impossible to portray if it were shorter, pretty much everything that was in that scene served a purpose, as do most of Tarantino's scenes. For example I only noticed the second time around that the henchman that helped kill Oe-ren parents, the one who shoots the whiskey and then sets it afire, is actually Bill. See subtle things, any half-wit can make a flashy 2 minute anime scene in a movie, it takes talent to make an anime scene in a live action movie be subtle.

see.. i didn't even MENTION black and white. i don't know why people keep calling it that. it was a weird combo of monotone (b&w) and some color distortion.
for one... blood was whitish... watery. tarantino could even have used water during that sequence.
another thing: you might notice how in some combat-oriented movies/mangas/books etc, people wild with bloodlust or superpowerful chi are almost blinded by their vision, or see things in altered vision...

Other than that everyone seems to really like it, some people don't get the anime/kung-fu references but that's too bad for them. I was actually hoping people wouldn't catch on as so I could tell everyone "I told you so" later, but I guess when a film's this good even the unwashed masses accept it.

I really have to both agree and disagree with you there. Both movies have kickass soundtracks, all put together exactly the way they should be - but in <i>completely</i> different ways, as far as style is concerned.
And I do think it was a bit of a live-action anime parody. The insane, obviously fake uber-gore, the silly hoardes of henchmen, etc. Granted, this parody only occured in the parts of the movie involving Oren Ishii; it'll be interesting to see if Tarentino sticks to this style in the second film, or moves on to a different parody that suits the story line of that movie better.

People are ignorant, they don't understand the genre so they call it a parody. For those that didn't get it, it is not a parody, it is Tarantino paying homage to anime/kung-fu films, he isn't "making fun" of anything. I suggest you keep that in mind and see the movie again, I have a feeling you'll appreciate it more.
And as far as it being black and white to tone down violence.......what movie were you watching dude?
Since I'm on the subject I'll shed light on the anime scene in the movie, some people have said it was too long or even "out of place" (sigh). The thing is it wasn't an accident that it was the length it was, if it was a 2 minute scene of animation it would just strike the audiance as drastic and everything would seem blatent in it, there's a reason he uses a smooth transition into it. There is a lot of subtle things in that scene that would be impossible to portray if it were shorter, pretty much everything that was in that scene served a purpose, as do most of Tarantino's scenes. For example I only noticed the second time around that the henchman that helped kill Oe-ren parents, the one who shoots the whiskey and then sets it afire, is actually Bill. See subtle things, any half-wit can make a flashy 2 minute anime scene in a movie, it takes talent to make an anime scene in a live action movie be subtle.
for one... blood was whitish... watery. tarantino could even have used water during that sequence.
another thing: you might notice how in some combat-oriented movies/mangas/books etc, people wild with bloodlust or superpowerful chi are almost blinded by their vision, or see things in altered vision...
and then uma blinks. sexy effect, quentin.
