Can we get combat for Won??
Steam as it is currently doesnt work when offline eg: lanning with mates.
What i want to know is would people want a copy of Combat that works with Won so we can play offline on Lans with no net connection. (This is unless steam is changed so it works without a net connection).
I thought maybe S & I forums but i wanted to know peoples feelings first.
Just move it if u want moderators.

Face it, guys. Steam is the future, or at least the immediate future.
with won they cant earn money anymore...
kinda sad..
That's the 4th time I've posted that =P

By the time 2.1 is out LANplay will probably be available over Steam.

but im sure nobody want to do that...
anyway... we will have to pay for steam too

:-/ best way would be to pay to play on won, this way they havent to shut it down..

When u first install HL without a connection to the net it will always be Won and why will u need to pay to play on Won when u first install u dont connect to the net to play. In order to pay for it as u suggest that would mean a net connection yet again.
I basicly clear off every game i have for a Lan so i can install only what is played, with a Won version of Combat (a game very effective for small lans) it would be very sensible for lan popularity.

funny... I didn't think so either =P
IMHO most of us are doing so already... Time is money, and almost every halflife-forum is full of players posting how they wasted their time trying to get steam working at all.
Why is the community so eagerly betatesting some software - just for playing something that still can be played without ?
<cyn>Of course, employed testers cost money, I guess that's what gabe meant when said they always felt like 'being a part of the community'</cyn>
LAN play w/o internet connection for Steam is on it's way. Don't worry. Though I don't know what kind of LAN doesn't have an internet connection.
Easy. The kind that just has a 56k modem in one machine at their house. More common than those accustomed to broadband may think. Valve is trying this kind of stunt WAY too early. Only about 20% of the US has readily available broadband, and most every service is starting to kick in download limits. Couple that with the fact that I think valve is going to prioritize P2P over LAN play on steam (so they can deploy HL2), and I'd wager 56kers are gonna get the raw end of the stick.
*NUKED.* You will NOT discuss this on the N-S forums.
Alright alright... I'll wait till it comes out to discuss stuff like that...
Steam seems like a double edged sword to me. On the one hand, it makes the HL interface no longer suck, and the friend finding stuff alone is kinda cool. Mod management will be a lot easier, and updates will be easier once they get the bandwidth on the servers solved.
However, without P2P it just can't meet the community needs. Further, the DRM they're exercising goes past anti-piracy and into the realm of just making things flat out inconvenient for paying customers. Finally, they really are leaving 56k gamers out in the cold, and there's still a lot of em.
I dunno, I'm really kinda iffy about the whole thing until I see it mature by a year or two from now. Care to comment on anything about how easy it is from a mod development perspective to get things into steam? Easier? Harder? What changes for you guys on the dev end? Seems like it might be easier to me, but I'm not totally knowledgeable on that aspect of things.
Seriously though, it's going to happen theres nothing you can do so grab a nice seat, listen to the facts instead of the pointless rumour and enjoy the ride.
What's the chances of this thread getting locked now?
There are many games out there already that don't support dial-up connections for online play. HL is making a step towards that. It's still usable with dial-up, but just inconvenient like always.

Heh, I work tech support and try to talk people through that procedure all the time. It's amazing how many ways you can screw such a simple thing up, and how impossible it is for the average person to fix problems with it. The fact is, regardless of how you look at it, it's an improper implementation of LAN play. Say you want to have a competition where you want to isolate ANY sources outside of your own LAN for legal purposes because you have prize money. You can't have an internet connection in that case. What do you do then? Open a big fat security hole and a chance for a lawsuit.
Further, I just don't like being required to check in with Valve for purposes of my own private party. Yes, we're playing your game locally. What business is it of yours? I paid for my game, leave me alone.
Again, I shall reserve my judgement on Steam until it's mature and ironed out, but for now it could really suck or be a very Good Thing . Gabe being an ex-MS employee though, I'm hoping he can avoid the temptation to make money at the cost of customer satisfaction.
I realise that this is a perspective thing, but isn't it better to fight against percieved injustices instead of sitting back and "enjoy the ride"?
Although I don't have much of an opinion on Steam a the moment (since I won't use it until I have to), the download sizes do seem a bit unfair for 56kers. Maybe they should offer to burn Steam onto a CD and sell it cheap (50p plus posting and packaging. (: )
Anyway, its good to know that 2.1 will support the standard auth atm, as just now i cant get an un laggy game on steam (even tho my rates are right, my ping is low, the servers just seem to want me to upload over my capabilities, and im on cable
Besides,Steam was designed to have more control over their product, meaning HL and HL2,and also other future games VALVe
But it's nice to know that NS 2.1 will still be able to run on WON....sounds good if it can be a cross-platform mod with no bugs or wrinkles
BTW,I'm gonna consider emailing VALVe about the 56k issue,it really is unfair to 56kers,and I do not want to see them left out of the community. So yeah, email time....
And I more thing I am going to say... You are NOT going to pay for Steam unless you subscribe for special features.Just had to get that out of my system, and it feels good~!
The problem is that I don't have any real troubles with steam. So far the very few problems that have even showed up are already well documented on the steampowered or NS forums so it's just been a simple case of a quick tweak and away I go again ^^
I'm on a 1mb line so bandwidth is something I completely ignore and I've had a few games of go on steam plus enjoy annoying people on my friends list from time to time.
All in all I quite like steam; I know not everyone is fortunate enough to have a 'compatible' setup though so I'm sure it's causing much nastier problems for a few people and for anyone unable to get above 56k access because of whatever reason then I feel sorry for you but there's plenty you can do to cut down on the bandwidth steam uses. With my friends list off, auto-update off and whatnot I get exactly the same ping as I did with the WON system and I've yet to notice any difference to my game or ping with everything on anyways =3
One thing that stops me taking anything bad said about steam seriously is that I've seen how many people are willing to scream 'steam sucks' at the slightest problem without really just using their head, doing a quick search at steampowered and noticing the handy 'how to fix this problem' stickies the valve team have put in there for most common errors =D
