Converting To Steam

<div class="IPBDescription">People switching from valve to steam</div> I think all the players and servers from valve should switch over to steam soon. On average there is only about 10 servers on steam (for ns), and there is a shortage of players. I guarentee that once you get steam up and running with ns you wont switch back. Despite the little errors in steam, which is probably fixable if your computers dont suck and your not lazy, it is fine. The layout of steam is alot better than valve made theirs. Eventually your going to have to go to steam, so dont waste your time later when valve shuts down. So switch to steam..... yeah....

just so you know
I heard that hl2 would be running off steam also...
And isnt the wonid system based off a cdkey?

Half-Life 2 will use Steam to handle updates, server browsing and multiplayer.
The next major Half-Life 1 client patch will use Steam in the same way.
Your wonid is determined by your cdkey. Your steamid will be determined by your cdkey. If you buy a Valve product over Steam, then your steamid will be based on a unique identifier (basically a cdkey but you don't get a cd).
Could not connect to steam network.
Either the steam network is currently not running or your internet connection is down.
Please check your internet connection and try again.
And this has been happening ever since steam went non beta (ironic that the newer version which left beta is more buggy and crap than the old one)
Once again I state that any problems with steam are probably fixable, have you checked the steam forums or its tech help or did u download steam and give up when it didnt connect?
again ( i've seen this alot) another prosteam user responds to a reasonable explanation of a problem with a sort of 'you probably didn't give it a chance' message. and willis PLEASE stop referring to won as 'valve'. I don't think you really understand how steam works yourself (how does steam 'block' hackers?).
But steam can update faster than Won did. Steam updates have been very constant(beta and release version) Still i had problems with steam then i fixed it.....

When something new comes out, it is constantly updated, but give it a while and they will stop updating it every time after a couple of months. That goes with everything except for MMORPGS lol.
Why is that rabbit wearing a hat and sunglasses...
I mean erm, you won't have much choice when WON shuts down, or did you already allow for that?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->you can still cheat in steam.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->Who said you couldn't? Valve hasn't countered cheating with Steam yet.

HL was released 5 years ago and it's still being updated. So, you can't use that argument. (even if it was an argument)
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Frankly I only play on a couple of NS servers and I'm not switching to Steam until they do. Simple as that.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's fine. It's up to the user to decide when to go to Steam. WON will not go down until Steam's reliability is satisfactory.
The menus mucking up is the half-life patch not steam and besides the mod will be changed so that it works anyways so there's no point getting your knickers in a twist over it ^^

What I meant is that when things come out at first. Updates come very quickly.
But after a while, they are uncommon and reach to rare.
So, you shouldn't call those that use the menu for evolutions as nubs. That's just insulting and outright wrong.
Steam <b>IS</b> Valve
Won is not.
Steam was introduced to take over for won, as the won network was old, outdated and out of Valves contol.
Won was only chosen for HL1 because it is the standard Sierra system. Note how HL2 is not being published by Sierra.
Valve wanted to be able to release patches without first needing a publisher to approve of them. So self-publishing via steam was the first choice.
All around, the basic idea for steam is good, they just need to work out a couple things and possibly release a configuration file to make the text look like the old hl <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
So Steam is not replacing Valve.
Valve is replacing WON with Steam.
Because Valve wanted control over their games id system, which with won, they had very little contol over.
However now that it's source code may or may not have been leaked, I would like to warn you all to ensure you are only downloaded it from sites you trust. The only site I'd trust is www.steampowered.com.
If you download an edited version you may very well be installing some nasty built in virus, and while virus scanners and steam updates from the content servers may find or remove any viruses it's still good practise to be safe about where you download from.
I am still using the "old" WON system until it is replaced however. I am only using Steam to play OF right now <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Uh, no, it hasn't.
(not to mention the new worldcraft and various other tools)
Point is if you can use the menus when they're mucked up then you obviously have a good idea of where the options are anyways, so you'd probably be just as well transferring them to hotkeys. Sure I guess it's not for everyone but it's not like you press any other keys by accident when you go to walk forwards is it? ^^
Okies so not everyone loves binds, but it's a heck of a lot faster if you can find keys you can use and remember (I have my alien evos and upgrades on the F keys and all the gorge buildings on numbers 6 through 0 and the - and = keys for res towers and hives respectively =D )
<b>edit:</b> okies... I kinda take that first bit back. I might've got confused because I've seen a player called nubcaekes so I thought kwik was talking about them ^^;
Either way, I didn't mean to insult at least =3
Well, I'm more worried about hitting the wrong evolution key with a slip of the finger than accidents with my movement keys (which doesn't happen). Evolutions can't be taken back and they're important to have right. I'm more confident in being able to navigate the pop-up menu than to press a key on my keyboard. Being that there really isn't a time urgency with evolutions, this is fine for me. I just bind other things like weapon drops, health and ammo requests, order acknowledgement, team and random joins, etc.
But it's a personal preference, like you said. I just wanted to clarify that it has nothing to do with skill or experience in the game. I made my choice NOT to bind them.
