How To Convert Your Ns Win32 To Steam

DepotDepot The ModFather Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7956Members

All the info you need to do it right
As WONID's are all but history there seems to be an unusually high number of non-STEAM NS servers out there. It's relatively simple to convert your HLDS to 1.1.2.0 and be STEAM ready.

First of all your NS HLDS MUST have a STEAM supported mod in it (TFC for instance, that's what I used). Next install your HldsUpdateTool into you Half Life folder along with the hldsupdatetool_readme. Follow the instructions to Create an Account, and when that's successful Update the Server. Your all set and will have a STEAM powered HLDS v1.1.2.0.

I prefer to run my HLDS seperate from my Steam Apps.

Can you post links to download the necessary files? I'm unfortunately both stupid AND lazy

First download hlserver4110.exe and then install it, ensuring you leave the TFC mod there.
Next Download Dedicated Server 2.0 from the DOWNLOADS page and install it. Get the final release "Download NS v2.01" from the front page and update your version.
Finally go to Steams website and download Dedicated Server (Windows):, installing it as described above.

Are you still having issues with Steamids?

Thx kwikloader. I got the HLDS update tool but I have some questions that hopfully, someone can answer before I procede.

    1) What exactly does the hlds update tool do?
    2) Do I need to install HLDS 1120 before I run this update tool?
    3) Can I still run something like serverdoc with hlds 1120? If so, how?

    1) Converts your HLDS to STEAM
    2) Don't bother, because it still needs to be updated. I favor HLServer4110
    3) Yes, but for it to operate correctly insert "-console" in the target line.

Whatever you do, don't use the new Steam directory structure for your new NS HLDS installation.

One thing though, I'm having some major problems with errors and whatnot when I connect. Is there a server side fix for these problems?

Its the client errors everyone has been having problems with (maxerrordistance or something like that), and the sprite and font problems. Not much you can do server side. There is a good thread with fixes for all those things, but honestly, I don't think NS is worth running on Steam until there is a client side patch that addresses these problems. I'm not going on any inside information here, but I can't imagine that we won't see one soon. Then it will be worth running an NS Steam server.

I just don't think it is worth having to jump through so many hoops just to play NS on Steam when it still works perfectly well on WON. Now when WON is euthanized, and everyone has to switch to Steam, that will be a different matter. Like I said, hopefully by then there will be a client side patch (at least client side...).

I would urge the naysayers to go ahead and convert. Read these forums (and STEAM's also) and fix what you can. WON may be gone before you know it.

The Win32 upgrade was easy. I don't see why you people have issues with steam.

    WON is going away.

    Deal with it.

    Kwik,

Post your directory structure. That may be the confusing part with Steam and using 3rd party mods.

Once installed you update to 1.1.2.0 and THEN install ns into the Half Life folder.

Do NOT use the Dedicated Server on your Steam Games Menu!

As client-side error messages are normally not server related visit the Tech Support Forums for assistance. BTW, there IS a zip package out to eliminate client-side error messages in console, resulting in player lag and problems selecting and dragging as comm (low fps).

Yep, for the most part, this is correct. Also, I already know about said mentioned zip package because I made it. What is the port usage in Steam compared to WON? Will I need to add/remove any UDP/TCP ports from my current routing setup?

STEAM servers are still pretty hard to find. I guess most are waiting until WON shuts down.
  • BrutusBrutus Join Date: 2002-10-20 Member: 1555Members
I made a Steam server last night for testing, and people connecting were getting high pings and choke, until they added this line to thier confg. alias ex_maxerrordistance " "

After that it seems to be working well.
