How ready is ready?

<div class="IPBDescription">Hold the phone!</div>No no no, don't whip out the flamethrowers just yet. This is'nt about asking when the release is/why has'nt NS been released/or what have you.

What I wanna know (If a Dev can find the time to post of course  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> ) is how perfect should the release canidate be?

Like should it be (For reference: Scale of 1 to 10) near a 1 (Buggyer than the very first beta build of Anarchy online) or near a 10 (The perfect, not a single bug even if you tried even on the worst system and runs flawless on any and every system ever created by man). Or near a 5 (The Average release, a couple bad bugs, and perhaps a few/lot of 'Uhmmm... Huh?' bugs)?

I ask this because I'm curious. ^^ And because I'm bored. -_-

Hey, if I'm lucky. Mayhaps a few PT's can give their insight to the status of NS (Even just in Number form. =).

    From what they've said I think they want to shoot for about a 8/9.
  • BedwettingTypeBedwettingType Join Date: 2002-07-26 Member: 1001Members
    Seeing the way they work, I'd say they're shooting for a 10.  If they knew about a bug, they would not release the mod until that bug was squashed.  But bugs always crop up after a release.  Version 1 will probably be about 7-9.

    Sure HOPE they ain't aiming for a 10. Otherwise we probebly won't see NS released this year. -_-;;

    "Dev Team: Hey guys, rather than try to get all of the bugs out before the relese, lets try and get 80%-90% and leave the rest in...."

    Now why would they do that?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo--> They will get rid of EVERY bug they can find prolly, will there be bugs, sure, but not one the dev team has found and ignored.....

    I smell a hint of sarcasm in that y'know. =P That text does'nt seem like it holds much water actually. Coulda been a joke on the part of the Dev team...

    I think Flayra is shooting for a playable version.  Doesn't mean there may not be problems, but hes shooting for a version the most people will be happy with.

    There may be bugs.

    There may be some things missing.

    There may be some gameplay issues.

    However, we are trying to iron them out as fast as possible guys.  I know you've heard it before and probably will again, but the mod will be out very soon.

    Guess my definition is going to vary from alot from yours, so - just to make this clear, this is in no way an official word.

    You guys really don't have to worry.  Flay's a good guy, and an old pro, he knows what he's doing.  Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

    When CS released their first beta it wasn't all that great, (many bugs) but they kept updating/fixing and releasing new betas.  With each beta the mod became more popular/fan base grew larger.  Each beta allowed the word to get out about CS more (same with DoD almost).

    I would hope that the dev team just goes for something playable and decent, that way when they update/fix bugs and release a new beta the word will get out more and the fanbase will grow larger.

    Usually when new updates/fixes come they get covered in a lot of the halflife news sites and forums.

    CS was also released relatively early in the days of the HL mods. With NS being so much newer it will have to have most of the bugs ironed out to be able to compete. It's a different time now. IMHO.
  • Res1Res1 Join Date: 2002-08-18 Member: 1187Members
    Yes that is true, but you also have to admit that whenever the CS team released a new beta the fanbase grew by a significant amount.  If you played TFC way back then you would see it because a lot of the TFC players would go play the new beta, some would return back to tfc others wouldn't :/ o_O

    Yes, in order for a mod to compete against the other well known mods is to bring something completely amazing. CS became popular because everyone was tired of TFC and HLDM and their unrealistic damage systems/gameplay etc.

    So any smart dev would rather have something they feel can compete with the mainstream mods than to just release something that still uses the HL models and sounds.

    Would you play this mod if the aliens looked like the HL aliens and everyone looked like gordon freeman? How about the commander being a barney and the buildings being large squares with pure white textures?

    Nope, needs full content, needs quality design  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    A good way to make the wait seem shorter is d/l every single hl mod you can find and play them that is what i been doing.
  • BillBill Join Date: 2002-08-08 Member: 1108Members
    I've played just about every single HL mod and to be quite honest most of them just AREN'T that fun.  I'm so sick of realism mods, and at the same time stuff like FLF just doesn't appeal to me.  I honestly can't play most mods over a few days tops.

    DOD- They go overboard with the realism,  I've seen slugs with faster gameplay, round corner, get shot, die, repeat.  This is what I call TSS or The Sims Syndrome, if I wanted realism I'd go outside.
    Action HL- I played it for awhile and just grew bored with it
    Counter-Strike-  Every game is the same thing, I always end up on the team with campers that sit at the spawn and wait for the horde of deagle/awp wielding snipers to come kill them while I actually rush to a place to defend and get shot within 15 seconds of the round.  This is just one of the many reasons this mod has begun to drive me insane.

    etc, etc.  I just want a fun game to play <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

    Not everyone cares to join a 'clan' (club) and organize and make a little locked server with a little secret passcode and play and use voicecomm and have 1337 names that are more symbols than actual characters.

    SOME people like just joining a server and playing a few maps then stopping.

    Why should someone be forced to join a little club to have fun playing a game?
  • BillBill Join Date: 2002-08-08 Member: 1108Members
    I don't have nearly enough time to be in an organized clan.  To be quite honest, while I know not all clans are like this, clans are also one of the reasons I can't enjoy a game, I get so tired of joining these servers full of these elitist dummy-heads that all join one team and act like they're unstoppable because they can beat a server full of public players who don't call the game their life.  I really think to many people have stopped playing these games for fun and just care about making their scores look impressive.  And like Tick said, I should be able to stop by a server for a map or two and have fun without having to be in a clan.

    [Edit:  One of my words was censored so I replaced it with the infamous "dummy-head" insult  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> )

    Back on topic:  NS won't release with any bugs that cause the game to crash, or allow people to have every alien weapon, etc.  There may still be some smaller, hardly noticable bugs, if only because we want the game out soon, and because the affect of those bugs is quite trivial.  Of course, there may be some big bugs that we just haven't found yet, because we can only test so much, and we aren't doing 'walk into every wall, then press up, down, left, right, start, and select in  quick sucession' testing.  Once the big release comes, and people are playing 24/7, then we'll see how well it holds up (and I have no doubt that it will hold up quit well).

    Bill and TiCK, the comradery that you make with your teammates and executing perfect plays to beat your opponents makes it so much fun in match play.  Strategizing/helping each other out/ being in INTENSE matches.  You haven't experienced the full fun facter of a mod until you have been in some high competition intense matches.  Once you play a few of those, then you try to pub on a server where theres almost no organization, it's not fun at all.  Pubs will never be as fun as matches.
