They're not saying those games aren't great...they're just saying they're overrated. And I agree with a lot of that, although the games were nice, they certainly had a huuuge amount of publicity pimping them.
Those games (with the exception of Quake II) were in no ways over-hyped, they were darn good games. I played Donkey Kong Country and was one of the best ever.

Nope, I don't play it except for NS; and since I deleted it as of right now (until 2.1), HL's remained untouched.
If you look at the overrated list, a lot of those games were showered with many accolades as well. Just because HL got a lot, doesn't mean that exempts it from being overrated.
Good game? Yes. But it sure hogged all the spotlight for games that equally deserved some notice that year as well.
Halo was overrated. Maybe if Microsoft didn't whip bungie untill they ctrl+c ctrl+v ed half the levels to expand the over all game time, it might be better. Lets compare, shall we. Half-life: Many weapons. Many many weapons... Halo: Not as many weapons.. not nearly as many Half-life: Long, varried single player game which rarely was forced to repeat itself Halo: Long, droning, boring single player with repeated itself every 5 seconds. Half-life: Internet Halo: No. Half-life: Still being played years later Halo: I'm digging its grave right now.
Yes, the vechicles and the 2 weapon system were pretty good.. but not used often enough in the vechicles case. Multiplayer is okay, but usually is forced to split screen. Which is the devil. I'm no ps2 fanboy. I love my x-box a large sum more than I love my PS2. But lets face it... Neither of them can even touch PCs. Ever.
Bingo aNem, I finished Halo in a day, and I found the repeated maps shocking. I was stunned that they couldnt even be stuffed creating new levels, and found myself playing the same map, only in the reverse direction.
Halo definately was overhyped. I like the game, its heaps of fun, but it wasnt all it was whipped up to be.
FACT: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the most over rated game ever. Personally, I am insulted to find that Metal Gear Solid 2, and Final Fantasy VII were both in the top ten, while Vice City wasn't even on it.
I just glanced at the rest of the list, and only read the Metal Gear Solid 2 article. Just want to mention that Metal Gear Solid was not a remake. Also wanted to mention that when gamespy reviewed it a few years ago, they had a LOT of false details. For example, complaining about how you can only get a tranquilizer sniper rifle, when there is in fact a regular sniper rifle.
MonsE: and I could say a lot of the same things about NS, who's final product balance for 1.0 AND 2.0 were both over-hyped. But that would be striking below the belt, I suppose.

Halo was and is hella over-rated. It's a good, solid FPS, with some fun tricks (the vehicles) but it's damn repetitive, and didn't really do anything new as such.
Possibly having more than 7* enemy types (Hell, even Doom beat that) would have helped.
NB. No, equipping a Flood with a different gun does not a different enemy make.
This is just turning into the "I liked this game, omg gamespy didnt, OMG GAMESPY IS BAD". It's their own damn list, based on their own damn opinions. Calling them idiots just because you like one of those games they found overrated is being an idiot yourself.

no not really, just the single player adventure. The engine is nice though, VALVe put a lot of features in there for the time and they've supported MODs with anti-cheat(VAC) and shown quite alot of dedication to MODs(since those are what still sell HL1...). I find HL extremely under rated in one aspect, how many games can you point at and say they learned from what VALVe did with HL?
Also HL has pretty neat netcode that allows you to shoot at your enemies not where they are going to be when the server got notified of this event. This is what made unreal tournament unplayable for me, even with ping 20 or so you have to lead the shoot considerably even with hitscan weapons.
I actually found HL singleplayer to be quite rewarding above other FPS single player... and as for the HL netcode, that wasn't even done untill a later patch. The original netcode works just like UT does. Luckily as you said, Valve does a good job of supporting HL. Heck, some games still don't have voice comm.

Agreed.
Personally, I agreed with pretty much everything on the list. Most people still don't seem to comprehend that the games on this list are not necessarily bad games, just games that, while good, didn't live up to the pre-release hype. Hype in this case doesn't just refer to the "John Romero's going to make you his ****" school of marketing, but also to the general levels of anticipation created by the developers, magazines and the public themselves, and when it's pushed too far, the game will inevitably be seen as over-rated. Quake 2 was heavily promoted as the revolution in FPS gaming. I can clearly remember previews in PC Gamer eulogising about the amazing new AI routines, which were unlike anything seen before - fast forward to the game's actual release, and what do we have? Enemies that sometimes duck when you fire at them. Never mind that I personally loved Q2DM, and still think that the MP maps are the best set of DM levels ever created, the game was not revolutionary as promised, but rather just another shooter with prettier graphics, and so must inarguably be seen as over-rated. Same goes for Halo.
Other games can be classed as over-rated because our critical judgment is clouded in some way - B&W being the obvious candidate. I myself was in denial for a good couple of weeks over that particular game, purely because the concept was so cool, and my creature so loveable, that I really wanted the game to be as good as I had imagined it to be. From a more objective standpoint, I can only agree with Gamespy, it was not the game I had hoped it would be, and is therefore over-rated. Nostalgia probably plays a large part in denying that older, cherished games like Battletoads or DKC are actually over-rated - if you actually replay them in the cold light of maturity, they're probably not as good as you remember them to be. I never played DKC when it was on the SNES, but recently played it on the GBA - and it really is nothing special. Oh, and the woefully unwitty dummy-spitting of talentless comic-book hacks does nothing to change my opinion on that.
Bottom line: unless you're going to refute Gamespy's actual arguments, and provide a counter-point to their claims, don't bother bitching, your opinion is null and void. Whinging that "Gamespy are idiots, Game X is great!" does not count as a valid argument. Anyway, it doesn't really matter in the end - what's important is your experience of the game. I loved Mario Sunshine, and although I have to agree with Gamespy's points as to why it was over-rated, that doesn't make me cherish my memories of playing it any less.

Halo Not overrated? Are you insane? Half of the console magazines and those xbox only "gamers" called it the "Best Game Ever Made" Yet everything it does had been done before, and better.

I thought the original point was it's over-rated, full stop. Not overrated for it's platform. Halo is the best FPS on a console out there, no doubt. But this is mainly because all the competition was AWFUL, not because of the greatness of Halo.

I hate how some people get so uptight about games that don't have EVERYTHING they want in it.
Halo for a non modable game for a console was NOT over rated. You put out a better shooter for a console, and I'll give you a cookie, and conceed defeat. No one over hyped the Xbox version, people knew it would be nefed a little bit due to time constraints, but damn it, Halo is amazing, and I still continue to play it to this day.
Yes, but thats hype, not rating.
Also, many people expected it to be just like the demos they saw for the pc, they had a limited time window to port it all and change it around for the x-box so they couldn't do everything they orginally planned.

To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.
It's not the rating, it's the fact that the hype surrounding the game didn't match up with the final product.

I thought the original point was it's over-rated, full stop. Not overrated for it's platform. Halo is the best FPS on a console out there, no doubt. But this is mainly because all the competition was AWFUL, not because of the greatness of Halo.
