Gamespy's 25 Most Overrated Games
<div class="IPBDescription">Are they ****ing morons?!</div> <a href='http://www.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25overrated' target='_blank'>The article</a>
Ok Gamespy have are officially the bunch of biggest f***ing morons ever to grace this Earth....
'Most overhyped games' What do you expect a games company to do? "Don't buy our games, they really aren't that good"
Hype is put out by the developers and the community.
Overhyping is when it is hyped up and then fails to deliver.
Here are 6 games that make their list, that TRULY **** me right off:
5.) Quake II
7.) Final Fantasy VII
9.) Donkey Kong Country
13.) Battletoads
16.) Mortal Kombat
24.) Super Mario Sunshine
How the **** do you put THOSE games on an OVERHYPED list?!
THEY'RE ALL GREAT GAMES! THUS NEGATING YOUR F***ING DEFINITION OF 'OVERHYPED'
Jesus. How do QII, FF7 and DKC make the TOP TEN list? And they are nearly constantly in agreement!
GAH!

Agreed.
Just wait till they put HL2 in there <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
For the rest - definitely overhyped compared to the final products...
Bastages.
Edit: Gah, I was confused by Infinitums starting post. Dahm you. Yes, it's overrated. The list is fine.
Quake 2: Face the facts, Quake 2 wasn't the revolutionary game we tried to justify it to be. If it was that good, do you think TFC would have been made for HL instead of TF2 for Quake2 as originally planned? No. Why? Because given enough time after the overzealous review writers were done, people (more importantly, modmakers) came to their senses and realized ID could--and should--have done better.
FF7: (sadly, I have not played this game other than the demo of the horrible PC port, so I will not comment)
Donkey Kong Country: it was a sidescroller. An admittedly great-looking one considering it was on the SNES, but it didn't deserve as much praise as it got, because it honestly wasn't that much better than others in the genre. Can anyone say Metroid Series? Mario series? Thank you.
Battletoads: I think the description GameSpy gave for this one was quite good. The game tried to make up for lacking areas by making it so **** difficult that you wouldn't want to complain about the later levels, because you didn't want to admit to yourself "I wasted that much of my life just for <i>this?</i>" The result is people trying to give the game more credit than it's worth...overrating the game.
Mortal Kombat: it sure did bring publicity to fighting games, but it wasn't as good of a <i>game</i> as others in the series. Popular? Yes. But overpraised in the process.
Super Mario Sunshine: (same situation for me as FF7)

<a href='http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2003-09-19' target='_blank'>And the post that tells you about each panel....</a>
I usually agree with PA on a lot of subjects, this is one of them.
<b>HOW THE HELL IS HALO OVERRATED.</b>
I notice that GameSpy's public image is suffering more and more from the "Microsoft" syndrome. They are big, so they must be evil. Cuz having humour, writing good reviews and having extensive coverage of the really big games (*cough* PlanetHalfLife *cough*) will get you NOWHERE on teh intarweb, right?
heh, Halo and DS lived up to the hype (or whatever) for me, I'm just shocked to see both on the list (DS was kinda a gimme, not that many people liked it as much as I did.)
I play donkey kong country every weekend with my friends. Record time: 56 minutes.
Edit:Have I had too many beers? Yes.
You said it yourself. You're in disagreement with the public view. If the games on that list were fine for you, then all's good (that's what GS said too). However, for most people they weren't.
That game ruled. Those mutinous dogs!
NeverWinter Nights wasn't overrated...well, the vanilla version might be just a little.
I myself was enraged by the inclusion of American McGee's Alice, at least at first, but on reading the actual article, I agreed with them that the gameplay wasn't as revolutionary as many of its other aspects. They basically said that they liked the game, it just wasn't the be-all-end-all of games as it was hyped up to be.
Tycho had it right
They are so stupid!
Most of them on the list I agree with, but like many of you. Super Mario Sunshine, Battletoads, DKC, Mortal Kombat, FF7, Quake 2? WTH are any of these doing on the list?
I Loved all these games. Yes even Quake 2.
And as much as it hurts to say so, yeah, Metal Gear Solid 2 does deserve that 2nd place... stupid Raiden...
What's really funny is that for most of these games I bet that when they were reviewed they were all given a 9 or above (with the exception of Daikatana and games too old to have been reviewed by Gamespy)
My own list would look something like this:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->10. Mortal Kombat 3
9. Final DOOM (yes this is being posted by the right person)
8. Final Fantasy 8
7. Halo
6. Tomb Raider
5. Unreal
4. Daulder's Gate
3. Daikatana
2. E.T. for Atari 2600 (how was this one NOT on the list?)
1. Black & White (man that game was horrible, and soo overrated)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I Loved all these games. Yes even Quake 2. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Dear god Doom, I must agree with you on all counts.
Simply put:
WTH IS FF7 DOING ON THAT LIST
*pieceofsoap turns capslock off*
*Further Edited, because I didnt make much of a point*
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Everyone likes to have fun. I'm having fun right now! So I don't mind them having a little bit of fun with their list. But when you feign ignorance or discard historical perspective so you can look fancy, I don't have to tolerate your stupid **** anymore. When you deny the profound effect of Donkey Kong Country's fully rendered sprites in 1994, making the system a bulwark against the 32-bit revolution, there is no educating you. When you are seemingly unaware of the dramatic progress in both modeling and Internet play that Quake II was, and when you start to talk some **** about Final Fantasy VII - the game that absolutely pierced the mainstream and deposited the notion of gaming into a new generation - we've got nothing to discuss. You're **** or retards, and I don't care which.

I got bored with Halo so fast. My friend who isn't that bright continously plans it non-stop. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Stupid gamespy with their **** ****** *** ***** pay to download ****.
Do any of you here think that Half-life was overrated?
I'm going to take a quote from a mobygames' review here:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->But the real bad thing in Half-Life is that it is completely over-rated. Half-life is a great game, but let's not confuse the issues, that doesn't mean it does anything new or innovative, it merely does everything we have seen before better. For instance, the storyline is a piece of crap, it's the usual "bad aliens come to kick ****" thing but updated to our current times (cue in the government cover-ups and X-files references). Why does it seem better then? Because it is made a part of the game. In previous games you played through a level/mission and then you sat back to watch the story unfold in cutscenes, on Half-Life the story unveils before your eyes in the game!! Revolutionary you say? I say System Shock, just because it's the first one that comes to mind. The gameplay itself is also unninspired, and shows the true nature of the game, for instance: take the giant tentacle sequence: what's it really about? flipping switches, and shooting anything in the way... However by lots of inventive designs and atmosphere tricks, we get duped into thinking it's actually a deep non-linear affair, millions of times I was fooled into thinking "wow, there must be hundreds of possible ways to finish this game" Wrong, Half-Life is a shooter pure and simple, and though it may seem deep it is actually Doom Redux: kill everything in the room, flip the switch, move on... ad infinitum.
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'll admit, it was a very long time before I actually played Half-life single player; I was most interested in the mods. Prior to HL, the only FPS I played were basically Doom, a bit of Duke Nukem 3D, and Quake. So I don't consider my personal FPS experience to be extensive. As the above review mentions, System Shock was a true innovator. I myself couldn't play that game through however, since I couldn't stand not being able to change my controls. In the year that Half-life was released, there were many other FPS released. Reviews I have read seem to suggest that SiN would of been just as level, if not, higher than HL, were it not for it's bugs. Than there's Thief, which also came out that year.
I really don't know whether I agree with HL having won so many GOTY awards in 98. What insanity could possibly possess me to say such blasphemy, you say? I say: Grim Fandango. Now THAT's a single-player experience. The only thing that makes HL's multiplayer truely fun is their mods.
Discuss/Ex-communicate me?
[edit]Puting some more things into perspective, I finished Half-life THIS YEAR. By this time, I had already finished Thief as well as No One Lives Forever. This is possibly why I'm much more immune in being "fazed" by HL[/edit]

When it's called <b>The Best Game Ever Made Ever</b>, it's overrated. I mean, jeez, it's fun, but it's got nothing on lots of PC FPSs. It's only good in respect to some of the other console shooters.
I'm expecting Halo 2 to be the game Halo was billed as.
