How do I tell the difference between "westside" and "eastside" rap styles?
East coast is a lil more...material in my personal opinion. Check out Notorious B.I.G. - Big Poppa
There's a pretty stark contrast between the two I think.
I'm mostly pro westside, so Tupac is my favorite of all time.
I've started liking south recently, Lil Jon, Nappy Roots, Youngbloodz, etc.
Three 6 Mafia is not entirely known for their lyrical content, but it certainly gets a party started <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
edit - Some really good political rap you might like is anything by Dead Prez <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
And I know a lot of you are gonna shoot this down, but I think some of the best lyrics for rap are actually from a rock band- Linkin Park.
But for actual rappers, I like DMX, Outkast, and early Eminem.
Also, there is a lot of confliction between both sides. Westside and eastside, they don't like each other.
You can hear in Tupac's lyrics his hatrid towards the east and so forth, most notably "hit em up."
I would have to say that my favorite rap artist would have to be Zack delaRocha (singer for the seminal <i>Rage against the Machine</i>).
Other than that, Cypress Hill is certainly a sweet group. NWA as well. other than that, I'm quite disgusted with the latest rap crap that MTV likes to so often spew out. I suppose that's just my crazy opinion...
Worst of all... no guitar... no drums.... just a very very repetive beat.
I enjoy eminem, I think quite honestly he's the most creative lyricist out there right now. Why do others have such a negative opinion of his talents? Because all that gets airtime is his 'made-for-tv and radio' songs. Lets be honest, 'without me' and 'lose yourself' is teeny bopper head-nodding club music. Its got no lyrical content.

The same way you tell non-convicts from convict rap (oxymoron detected)
I'm talking Aesop Rock, Pharcyde, J5, Deltron 3030, that business.
Check out Night Light by Aesop Rock, he's got amazing flow.
never got into it myself. when I hear it -- just like when I hear hardcore music -- I say this: learn to sing and play an instrument. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> OK I'm being antagonistic on purpose, just kidding, don't need to flame me. Or, go ahead make fun of the fact that I like classic rock if you wish. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Edit: I do have a warm place in my heart for "you be illin'" -- because that song is hilarious =P
I'm one of those people who're into radically different types of music, e.g., Rap and Metal, so... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
and some rap
but i also like country, rock, hardcore, punk, Classical...you name it i like it ^_^ from mozart to r. kelly to megadeth <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
When y'all live 20 miles away?
Ask them about the club they was at when they snuck out,
after they ducked out the back
when they saw us and bugged out?
Ducked down and got paintballs shot at their truck, blow
And I don't need help
from D12
to beat up
two females
in makeup
when they try to scratch me
with lee nails? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
eediot.
or... also by young, pick up the pace
old school hip hop is just.. it's just better.
I know that some people dont understand that and dont see anything special about 2pac but I certainly do.
I can really relate to alot of his lyrics. I started to listen to 2pac when I grow up and to me he was like that "father" I never had.
"Somebody wake me I'm dreamin, I started as a seed the semen
Swimmin upstream, planted in the womb while screamin
on the top, was my pops, my momma screamin stop
From a single drop, this is what they got
Not to disrespect my peoples but my poppa was a loser
Only plan he had for momma was to **** her and abuse her
Even as a little seed, I could see his plan for me
Stranded on welfare, another broken family
Now what was I to be, a product of this heated passion
Momma got pregnant, and poppa got a piece of a**
Look how it began, nobody gave a **** about me
Pistol in my hand, this cruel world can do without me
How can I survive? Got me askin white Jesus
will a nigga live or die, cause the Lord can't see us
in the deep dark clouds of the projects, ain't no sunshine
No sunny days and we only play sometimes"
/R.I.P Makaveli\
It's not really my thing, in the main. I'll listen to it when it's on, I like good scratching, and I like creative lyrics with a nice flow.
If you hate Marshall Mathers, I respect that.
'Cause sometimes, I don't like him either.
I only liked his earlier music, and some of his unreleased tracks.
My all time favorite rapper is Tupac.
I also listen to Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill, Big Pun, Xzibit, some Eminem, and 50 Cent. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Some I may have forgotten, I'll probably edit this post. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
personally i hate eminem, hes just dull...
My favorite arteests are
ginuwine
Jay z
Nas
However, the best music is BHANGRA!!! w00t!!
Punjabi MC feat Jay Z "beware of the boys"
Bally Sagoo
etc., etc...
If he was underground you would think he's the "shiznit".
I tried to like them, but never did.
Their rap style just doesn't work for me.
Anyways, I like Eazy E a lot. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Public Enemy ( "Black Steel" or "Bring the Noise" absolutely rock. )
Eminem- As Homer said, a lot of people dislike him simply because he sold a few records. The same type of people who decided SOAD were sellout mtv hoes when "Toxicity" sold well..
50 Cent ( terribly mainstream I know, but I don't care, it's a good record imo. )
Cypress Hill ( been listening to the hill for over a decade now, they're still good. )
Honorable mentions to Dre, Tupac and a few others, just that lot immediately sprang to mind.
A.) The kind of people that quickly get tired of something if they keep hearing it over and over again.
OR
B.) The kind of people that don't want to listen to what everyone else is listening to.
I myself am guilty of "B"
But if even if its mainstream, if its good, I still listen to it.
Snoop Dogg
Dr. Dre
Warren G (back in the day)
Tupac
Biggy
Xzibit
and all the funny new stuff cause you know I'm a P-I-M-P
by the way Eminem's a fake, so don't list him.
Also, even if he was a fake, he still raps better than 95% of all the other rappers.
Personally, if Eminem was a fake, it would tarnish Dr. Dre's reputation.
I didn't say he wasn't a good rapper, I said his whole image is fake which makes what he's singing about pointless.
