    Windows folder: 1.49 GB
    Sierra Folder: 1.0 GB
    My Docs: 1.0 GB
    Pagefile: 1.0 GB
    STEAM FOLDER: 1.36 GB

    Free Space: 0.37 GB

this is why i am upset. i am having difficulty playing a five year old game on a four year old harddrive and a three year old processor. i get a sick feeling HL2 will run with less lag than the 500k steam installer.

Is there even a way to get steam without having to install Half-Life and CS? I don't want either of those, all I have HL for is NS, so the best way for me would be to get just the bare minimum to play NS, without all that HL and CS ballast. And I'm on a limited cable account, if I go past a certain amount of data transferred per month, it becomes a lot slower (to the point where even reading plain html on the net is awfully slow).

If that's not possible, I'm afraid I won't be playing NS after WON goes down. 1.8GB? I don't have that much free space on all of my partitions combined.

I tend to agree. There is no other reason for FORCING us to use this program. I think it would be nice to be optional, but then they will most likely bust out with a "oh we need you to pay for all the bandwidth we're giving you for this pos software, since no one wants to pay the 10 dollars for that useless bonus crap"

can they legally do this to us -- change the system requirements of the game we already bought? can we get our money back? the box originally said like 500 mhz required to play, now, w/ steam, they say 1000. The required HD space for HL was advertised as just a few 100 megs. now it's 1.8 gig or whatever. my 10 gig HD and 700 mhz system can no longer play the game the box said it could play. That's false advertising if I 'ere seen it. Anyone know whether this is as illegal as it seems?

It is not illegal for reasons already explained that people are apparently too lazy to search for. Stop opening endless steam threads people, or O/T will have a little time-out period without any postings allowed about anything.
