You're one of the lucky ones frog... I was lucky enough to get a screen shot of mine downloading (yeah, it downloads at these speeds for a few seconds, then stops).

There is one point where I'd get close to the speeds I'd normally get if I was able to download this stuff the sane way.

And don't ask me why its downloading CS to play NS.

Jabs restart you comp, I got the same thing as you and when i restarted it started d/l just fine.

I think the damn thing stalls, and if it does - ie no updating for over 10 min, then just restart your comp.

See, what the problem is right now is that VALVe is having to update all the servers.

Despite you idiots thinking its some P2P thing, its not. If it was, it'd be illegal, because I've looked through the notes, and it doesn't say anywhere about being P2P. Ok?

It will show you ads a lot, but thats so that steam won't cost money to play. When your loading a game-ad. When your updating? Ad. Everywhere, there will be ads.

BUT!!!

There is the issue of "Will it be better?"

Well, I'm here to say, yes, it will, definately.

It may take a while, but they've gotta work out some of the bugs. Not many people got the beta, so they didn't have to worry about what would happen when the masses did. Now they do. It'll take a week, then everything will be like normal, but better.

So stop insulting VALVe, and realise this is for the best, in time.

Not to say that anything in your post was wrong or "bad speculation", its just this part was screaming at me. The original release of the Beta 2 was downloaded so much in the first 30 minutes, they had to close the beta for a few weeks for whatever reason they had.

I do pray to god that either steam gets better or is just trashed.

Oh, and marine, thanks that helped it a bit. I'm getting about 20kb/s now.

Let me just restate that anyone who seriously thinks that a client that:

a) requires you to download counter-strike and HALF-LIFE ITSELF to play
b) is buggy/slow
c) somewhat disables far superior browsers like ASE
d) _WILL_ have a monthly pay 2 play

... is good, seriously needs to think this over again. I just mentioned some of the bad sides; the most important thing ofcourse is the fact that Half-Life just got it's death sentence and I surely will not support a company that pulls this obnoxious bullsh1t on gamers who have supported their 5 year old game like this. I'll just "aquire" HL2 instead.
• jabsjabs Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10773Members
steam doesnt disable ASE. I opened ASE recently and it had an update on how to get it to work with steam. I do know that valve said the P2P would be the 3rd option, 1st being by HL2 SP and 2nd being buy HL2 SP, MP, and MOD support. They feel that option 3 will be the "best value" for everyone. Those that get options 1 and 2, to my understanding, wont have to pay for steam and hopefully wont have to use it.

I said somewhat. If no-one else is going to do it, I'm sueing Valve for monopolizing server browsers.

Hell, everyone who plays HL are downloading steam, of course it'll be slow the first few days.

All your statments are false

Not true at all, have you been informed?

this guy is so badly getting on my nerves, is there a way to ignore people?

guys like this uttlery ignorant waste-of-flesh are convincing everyone else
to hate steam based on all these fabricated and uninformed facts.

it was released hours ago. it's buggy.

if you dont want the challeng of being there since the beggining and finally
getting it to work after storms of discussion and research (which brings the
community closer imo), then wait your 13 year old **** on the sideline and
keep using WON for the 2 or more weeks that it will be supported

OK idiot, mark my words when Steam will become pay 2 play. Just mark them. I know it sounds ridicilous but that's the way it's going to be. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see the pattern Valve has created here.

You're wrong, steam will not go pay to play, they learn. (look what pay to play has done to planetside). Right now you're just assuming, with little knowledge.

I personally hope that steam drives HL to its grave. HL community will just have to find some other game...

Er...ok? Steam installed fine, but it took more than...5 minutes to start a game, so I just sort of quit and played some TS using ASE.

Kann nix it has not been released hours ago, it has been beta tested for month. I wonder what they've been doing, since it still appears to be buggy.
Yes of course a lot of people are trying to download the updates now. But that's Valve's problem. What did they expect? They should have been prepared for that with enough mirrors. If they don't have enough mirrors they shouldn't release it. It's as simple as that.
Remember the NS 2.0 release? Remember how many mirrors MonsE got for the rather small NS community? (Me being one of the mirror admins)
What Valve is just doing here is far less professional than any major Mod release I have ever seen!

Also for the P2P thing it depends, you can subscribe to a game/mod for like 9.99 a month. Or you can buy the game in store, depending on your choice.

I think that when TF2 comes out it will be a P2P option, also it will be a seperate game which does not come as an add-on for HL2, you will have to buy TF2 seperate or via P2P...but thats just my speculation/knowledge

My upload bandwidth is tiny and precious, like a flower that only blooms at BRI speed. I'm not going to let valve synergize me out of my connection idle time. I even have a *gasp* legitimate copy of half life, and this repulses me from using it.
