Umm... Maybe because it still is? The WonID - SteamID change won't happen until Steam is stable, which'll take some time.

These people are incredibly missing the point.

STEAM ALLOWS PATCHES TO GET TO PEOPLE QUICKLY!!! BUGS CAN BE FIXED IN DAYS INSTEAD OF MONTHS!

They're simply conspirating about anything they don't like. Sort of like politicians in congress.

THIS IS NOT P2P. PLAYERS DOWNLOAD CONTENT FROM COMPANIES/PEOPLE THAT CHOOSE TO HOST THE DATA. THIS IS NO KAZAA RIP-OFF.

The way I see it, either Steam will start working properly for 99% of the playerbase, with another 0.7% added with specific patching, or it'll get abandoned (or the full transition will be postponed). Valve created a highly valuable franchise with Half-Life, and WON is working very well. They wouldn't ditch WON in favour of a system that doesn't. My guess is that they are pushing out Steam now in order to reach the masses with it, so that all the flaws are out before HL2 launches. If, in two weeks time, a large part of the community still can't access Steam properly, they won't just take WON down.
There will always be a few people for whom it won't work, and they'll lose HL once the transition is complete. I feel sorry for them (and hope I won't be one of those people myself).

OH NOES!!!!1111eleven TEHY R HAXING TEH WON ADN MAEKING TEH STEEM1! HAF LEIF SI DEWMT!onehundredandeleven

Yeah... um... calm down. Steam doesn't discriminate against modem users, because it bootstraps itself with whatever you had installed already. All it has to download are patches you don't have, which you would have had to download anyway, only Steam doesn't make you wait in line and look at ads like Fileplanet does. Steam will replace WON only when it's deemed stable, so if you're freaking out because Steam is still going through growing pains, don't worry, because Valve thus far has not shown any evidence of being run by the mentally disabled, nor have they shown any evidence of wishing to screw over their loyal fanbase, whom they have poured a LOT of effort thus far into serving.

I swear. Whence comes this need to freak out over every little thing that Valve says or does as if it's the end of the world?

    For right now, they are.

Once Steam has proven itself to be in every way superior to the alternative (having separate servers for authentication and patches), they will switch over to using Steam exclusively, because the alternative will be obsolete and offer no benefits over Steam.

That's why. And I guarantee that until Steam is deemed superior, it will not replace WON entirely.

Well, this product rollout has been a horrible failure.

    My experience so far:

    1) Downloaded Steam
    2) Waited ages for it to update, restarting several times
    3) Started account creation process
    4) Reached point where it copies old files
    5) Program stalled while copying old files. Not crashed, stalled.
    6) I had to close it.
    7) Started it up again. My account had been created. But it just asked me to log in, not copy data.

So, at this point, I can't play any built-in games, due to the Steam network being at a virtual standstill, and I can't play NS, because it didn't copy my data over, and THERE IS NO OPTION TO COPY DATA OVER AFTER YOU CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT.

I was a supporter of Steam during the beta, but now... I'm not so sure...

I just realized that a year ago or whenever it was CS 1.4 came out, everyone moaned that once bunnyhopping was removed from CS, nobody would play it any more and Valve would go bankrupt (because apparently every time someone bunnyhops on a CS server, Valve gets a nickel - not sure how that was supposed to work). CS remains the most popular online game there is, as far as I know. GG.

As I said, people (especially the ones on that Atari forum, MAN) seem really eager to take ANYTHING Valve EVER does, be it releasing a new game that looks like it's going to blow everything else out of the water, try to provide a content delivery system that will help curtail cheating, lower game prices, and reduce patching times, and seize on that action as a harbinger of doom for Valve, and dance around in circles smearing themselves in pig blood and proclaiming how they won't download Steam/buy Half-Life 2/play CS/play NS/take a shower ever again.

I dont mind them wanting us to catch up - its the whole

    SURPRISE!!!!!

WON is going to die, and you need this now to play halflife. That wasnt made clear to the HL community - and thats especially clear with all the "WTH is steam" questions being posted by a LOT of experienced HL community members.

And now my bloody steam program has stalled while trying to copy DoD over - FFS!
  • p4Samwisep4Samwise Join Date: 2002-12-15 Member: 10831Members
It's not a surprise. This has been a stated goal for over a year. And it's not happening RIGHT NOW - it's just looming on the horizon.

Unless Valve haxed yuro megahurtz and your current HL install suddenly no longer works, why are you complaining?
  • Cheez1Cheez1 Join Date: 2003-01-28 Member: 12900Members
I really don't get the guy who's talking about how people are going to rack up huge bandwidth and how steam is like a p2p program. It's very much not a P2P program, the onyl way this would be true is if you are a content server host, NOT if you have a dedicated server. He makes it sound like Steam is uploading YOUR hl files to other people if your not using them, which siutterly rediculous, if that were what steam did i'd slap valve silly. Its quite the opposite, there are mirrors of content provided by valve out there that steam takes and downloads to us. Be it patches or games.

The way i see it is steam is just a fancy program to prevent pirate copys of hl and to get game fixes out quickly without having to go through all kinds of crud and version updates.

Also it saves valve (and us) money by eliminating Sierra, their publisher. No publisher means lower costs to valve.

Anyhow i'm a little mad that steam is not working properly now, but give it time. Don't forget how many copys there are of hl WORLDWIDE. All those people are trying to get steam now, and that's not easy no matter how many servers you have. I say give it a week or so.

But it IS a surprise. Have a look at the flood of people asking wth is steam. Why do I need it, when do I need it, is it free etc.....

I think valve could have done just a little better in getting the message across. I went to the steampowered site a while back just to see what it was about and left with a big ?

I didnt understand, and I had a lot of questions that they didnt answer.

And now I find out from you that its not happening right now.

Just seems to me that very few ppl actually know wth is going on.

EDIT Quick question, where abouts does steam actually ask for your hl cd key? I am currently updating cs but I havent actually joined a server yet. So when does it ask for your cdkey? anyone know?

    ASE gives you patches.

Steam allows valve/mod makers to edit one particular file and everyone will download it automatically.
