@jabs: Just let it run. Even it seems like it is doing nothing. The monitoring thingie only monitors the internet activity, so don't mind that for now. Just don't stop the program!! It will finish, it just takes veeeeery long. Be patient.
Right now, all I want to do is play half-life with music. Something I haven't done in years because I lend my cd to a friend who hasn't returned it. So I'm downloading hl. Only 400 minutes left

Valve really screw up their preparations for Steam, they should've expected a lot more traffic than they did.
Also from what i've read Steam really isn't ready to go live yet, stupid bugs, memory leaks and space hogging all should've been fixed by now, they've just rushed to get this out before HL2.
Now i can understand why, but banner adds in the program itself? Just sick.
I think i'll go a month without NS while a working copy of Steam shows up.
Oh damn... I had to create 2 accounts anyway because, for whatever reason, valve disabled my server admin account I made yesterday for the hlds. It luckily works on the client and I guess I'll have to use that now. In other words, I closed it already but damn... this is inefficient...

Impossible! I've just changed my plans reguarding my purchase (now, would it be ex-purchase?) of HL2. I think I am just gonna settle for Doom 3, unless steam becomes a godly program by the time D3 comes out. I'll miss NS2, provided that comes out on HL2
From what I've read, Valve really deserves a few hard whacks on the head with Teh Clue Stik!. It'd be really cool if we just made our own damned WON servers, and used the latest non-steamed HL release (probably hacked a wee bit to work with different WON servers) for everything. That would **** valve off, but they deserve it.
And no, I'm not just suggesting this because Steam doesn't work with WINE.
WTH? any ideas? no one else seems to be having this problem
[edit]: somehow, the install version available on fileplanet.com is different than the one on the official steampowerd.com website, and woulden't connect. i re-downloaded it from the official steam site and it seems to be working. be sure to get your version from http://steampowered.com

Yeah when I saw that in the screenshots posted my heart sank. More bandwidth being sucked up into useless adware. This is turning into a complete farce; I'm scared to even try and get Steam at this point. My housemates are still going through the nightmarish task of getting just one install to work and when I see the pain they're going through I fear for us all.
Yes, i dont like it and if nothing else that just from principe i will use any other way awailable, no matter its legality, to not use Steam to play HL over net.
I got the HL platnum pack a while ago... the one before blueshift, and scince then ive lost my HL jewel but i still have all the others. ive been using my CS-key (sometimes blueshift or TFC but the op4 key doesnt work correctly) to authenticate on WON. if i have to buy another HL key to play on steam im afraid ill never play HL1 NS again... and its freaking valve's fault.
but more speculation, can i even play NS anymore? is there some place i can stick the NS folder in order to play on steam, is there any way of using ASE HLSW or gametiger to find servers/people? is there a godamn person here that has played NS2 on steam?
and ads... jesus tapdancing christ... aside from automatically losing all respect for the company on first sight of ads, how can i get rid of them. there HAS to be a way... and if there is, someone needs to do it ASAP. maybe we can get the guys that riped the ads out of Kazaa to make SteamLight or SteamLessGay.
*shrugs* only problem with my steam is that I can't play any games (I believe that some people can)...I start CS up and it crashes when trying to update/verify or something like that...
Good thing that Steam asked whether I wanted to keep a backup of all my mods/games ect...at least I can still play via the old fashion

They may have also switched in a rush cause they saw that won's life wasn't going to go on much longer. Like they saw problems developing. Maybe not, but its a thought.

Steam's working great for me. Installed correctly at both home and work, accepted my CD-key, and is working like a charm. It took a little while to get all of the Stam files, but now it's fine.

Well ive started my install of stam and after an hour it doesnt seem to be doin anything, for the past hour its been telling me that its "converting Base goldsrc shared content localized files into steam cache" anyone know much longer till its done?
throughout this steam thing i tried to keep an open mind with Valve and steam, hoping that the final product would work, trying not to judge it till i tried it.

Is it supposed to do that?
I did, and now I would have to create a new acco if I wanted to do that part again... And I won't...
Hope Valve fixes this soon.
