Consider yourselves lucky you were able to install it at all, mine just got to "converting HL to steam cache" and did absolutely nothing for 2 hours but eat my memory, till I finally canceled it and then quit (of course, I had to end task because it froze soon after I canceled), and when started it up again it told me it had to download HL, no sir, 480mbs on 56k? I think not. I really wanted to like Steam, despite how much the beta's sucked, but this is worse than the beta, much worse.

I'm installing atm, and yes it does take a long time, but I think it will be worth it.

hint: The icon in the tasktray changes when steam is updating, its got some dotted lines going into a small logo, wait until this has finished, and then check the game you wish to plays properties to see if its updated, if not, select autoupdate and run again.

hint2: steam may need to be run in compatiblity mode (windows 98/ME) when running steam under windows XP

Steam, steam, steam where to begin?

I've been reading up on it and following it over the last few months. I remember on CSNation (I'm sorry!) a Valve/Steam representative was saying how Steam was "A waste of time".

Another thing to play on LAN (or with bots w/ CS1.6) you need to be online!?! Doesn't that defeat the purpose of LAN/Bots (unless ur on 56k like me )

*Sigh* Why are they doing this? To "sell" games over Steam? Not likely. I'm not gonna wait for years on end to download a game through Steam when they're selling it at the stores anyway. What do you have to show for yourself if you dl a game over Steam (and pay)? A screenname and password? I'd rather get my boxed, CD w/ manual from the shops.

Btw, when you dl a game from steam, it deletes the cache file after installation, so if you need to reinstall something (we all know how often we have to do that with HL), you gotta dl half a gig again.

Plenty more to add, but i cbf adding it, and im sure you cbf readin' it

My god, that was one big rant. I'm an angry, angry man (lol not really).

But to clarify on some other points made earlier, LAN games can be made but you still need the connection to the internet to start Steam. Valve is already working on letting us setup LAN games without internet connections.

This is a painful but necessary transition for the HL community. In the end this will be advantageous to us all. We need to support Steam as it matures. I have no doubt this is a great thing for HL gaming.

To play NS with steam you have to do the following:
1) go to the games menu
2) under third party games (open up natural selection) (this is assuming you have done the conversion process)
3) when and IF you get past the "preparing to play half-life" AND gordon loading screens.
4) click on "find servers"
5) find a server with people and the lowest ping to you (not much of a choice where servers go at this moment)
6) play NS.

Silicon, it just doesn't work. I get the error mentioned above.

My point is, if I do something like, oh I dunno, re-install my system I DO NOT want to have to download all the games again. In the "old" days I would just keep the install executables somewhere and then re-run them to install. Now it seems I have to download 1GB everytime. Thank God I'm not on 56k.

Also, Steam definately has a memory leak. Constant reboots are necessary. And it's a total disk space hogger. These things should have been addressed before release.

As for the rest of my points, I understand that fixes will be forthcoming, I said that. But come on, you have to admit, to Joe Public it comes across awful. It really looks like Valve haven't thought this one through or tested it.

I for one am going to uninstall it until either I HAVE to use it or these problems are fixed.

Wow...the beta is more stable than the client. I think I'll wait for a patch/ support from a lot of mods.
• PseudoKnightPseudoKnight Join Date: 2002-06-18 Member: 791Members
LOL, that slipped my mind. It's a new feature but I was aware of it. "Delete Local Game Content" = "Uninstall Game". LOL

I want to point out I found another way to see your progress on downloading a game/mod. Go to the properties of a game and click "Calculate Cache status". It might take a bit depending on your system specs, but it will pop open a window telling you the "Amount of application acquired" among other things.

Ok, Steam's installed and all seems to be fine. However, when I go to play a game all I get is "Preparing to play Half-Life". I've waited over half an hour, whereas everyone else (including my brother on the same LAN) is getting in almost instantly. Any ideas why mine's b0rked?

Hrm, lets see.
Dl Steam, install, waits till it updates, selects hl+ns from menu (after registering), waits, gets food, watches tv, 1st stages completes, plays game cube, it finishes, updates again..., selects tfc from menu, begins updating, crashes, reboot, Uninstall.

Steam should be steamed to death!
and this is what i think summerises all the bugs in steam "Its not a bug, its a Feature!" --Valve (note: this is made up)

Same problem here, whilst it was converting Half-Life and mods to steam, it crashed. Steam refused to work, I uninstalled, reinstalled, now I can't actually convert the game and mods which are all still on my drive sitting in C:\Half-Life\
So the solution, rather than there being an import function in Steam, I have to download ~500MB of Half-Life regardless of owning the CD and it already being installed, then re-download all the mods which are all waiting on my hard drive. Yes, on 56k this will be so much fun.

I know there is an import fuction during the registration process, but once you have registered (or in my case, Steam crashed during registration) there seems to be no way to import the games again short of downloading them all again.

Its not so bad, after you have downloaded Half-Life, you can put all your mods in ../steamapps/*youremail*/Half-Life and they should work.
• BJayDBJayD Join Date: 2002-09-02 Member: 1263Members
Ooooooh, so instead of downloading ~1GB+ of data I already have on 56k I only have to download ~500MB of data that I already have. That's alright then!

This just in! You can convert everything again by creating a new account! Logout in the settings menu, the only problem is that your steamID will be way higher, and as we all know, the lower your steamID is, the larger your nuts, but you can solve that by converting everything, then moving all the stuff to your first account.
