In fact, most of it will just transfer over seamlessly. This will shave off 2 years and 6 months of work.

    What I would like:

    1) New aliens: Large aliens, like the Gunship (The flying manatee thing) or the Destroyer.

    2) Large, open areas.

    3) VEHICLES.

What's the main reason none of these are in NS now?

Half-life engine doesn't support large open spaces. This means vehicles are useless, and large aliens don't really 'fit'.

Imagine a game where you SPAWN as an onos...

As for the 'NS is good for cramped quarters', then why even port it at all? It looks and plays fine on the engine it's on now. Porting it to Source and STILL KEEPING it small and cramped seems like a huge waste to me. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

Stop comparing NS to Bf 1942 or Doom3 (omg, who brought that up?!)..
I wasn't thinking of pure outdoor fights, I was more like thinking on doing a dropship landing, small outdoor battle (rush for the door kinda thingy), then the creepy indoor battle...
Imagine shooting a skulk trough his head with a charged energy beam, just to see it deflected by the Juggernaut's new 'Shield' ability, which blocks all forms of energy. (kinetic weapons can get trough).
You grab your advanced-jet-propulsion-system (AJPS for short), and thrust to the door, toss in a grenade and switch the airlock... Splat!

If u are drooling now, please grab a plate... You will need your keyboard for Ns 4.0 / 5.0!!! (or maybe, as some peepz say, a sequel to the best online alien RTS / FPS: NATURAL SELECTION!!!)

    [Fans only]
And every map should have a special scorpian-wizard somewhere...

NS needs to be brought over to HL2
not only because the HL engine is SOOOO OLD.
but becasue of all the AWESOME things you will be able to do in HL2 that you can't do in HL.

    Imagine this

/you are walking down a long dark hall you have your flame thrower in hand and your helmet flashlight on (not making that nice SPOT LIGHT effect), you hear a sound and turn around... nothing is there. You continue out into a large out door facility filled with trees and a bright pair of moons.
    RAAAAAAWWWWR
You look back and what do you see but an Onos charging towards you from about 30 meters away.
*crackle.... "Hurry jump on!" a voice rips through your voice comm
You turn around to see a APC speeding along side you getting closer, it stops, you get on and the Onos is closing in!
Your safe, and drive towards your bunker, the Large door opens and the APC drives in.
    RAAAAAWWWWWR
Now the Onos is joined by some friends outside
They are slowly destroying the breakable door.
    *SMASH!
A lerk flys into the room through the sky light and a volumatic cloud of green dust fills the room.
Flame throwers ignite as the flaming Lerk Flys up into the sky and then drops to the ground in a ball of fire!
    *BOOOOOOM
The door breaks and 2 Oni and a Fade charge into the room
The fades new ability "deflection" maks a small shield around the the Oni that slowly wears off.
Using the new graviton beam your mate starts to trow all kinds of things infront of the Onos as they destroy it just as fast.
The new turrets uses laser tracking to quickly fight back the Oni.
The commander uses a new teleport phase decive to evacuate the bunker as the bunks catches fire and crumbles.

    Jus think of the possibities!

I thought we used projectile weapons to maintain a certain "feel" to the game.

(The difference between bullets whizzing, and little bars of light sort of just appearing)

Anyway, that stuff doesn't impress me. You all want to watch a movie, ultimately, NS is still a GAME. I can't just plunk down 3 hours to land on a planet and clear out one dirty building! Ultimately NS still has to be a fun game that you can play in a reasonable amount of time. None of this vehicle/outdoor stuff! You wouldn't be playing the NS you know of now. Its like what everyone else is saying, thats BF1942 w/ NS models!

Is it cool to have a helmet flashlight and laser pointer? Maybe. But I see the middle of my screen JUST FINE, I certainly don't need a laser dot telling me where to aim. And are you SURE you want to be an alien on one of those outdoor maps? Running across flat plains as the marines mow you down? Or maybe being an onos in a forest and getting stuck because you realize the trees are a little too close to get through? (Don't even think about knocking trees OVER! I mean, thanks for clearing out the forest so I have a completely unrestricted arc of fire!

    MY INASNELY POWERFUL............ lmg?

I think Outdoor maps would work only if the alien you start out as changed from skulk to maybe...advanced skulk? like, a kharaa horse. That kills. The other aliens would work rather well, but I don't really see where you would get res... i mean:

Look! A conviniently placed node spewing nanosludge in the middle of nowhere!

Aside from that, I could see urban maps, and limited outdoor maps.I think that in the outdoor maps, the res costs might need to be lowered a bit because death would come so easily.

Why the next ns on HL2, and not on a other game(doom3)??

    Why??

    1. HL2 have been a great mod support, greater than HL
    2. HL2 support HL mods!!
    3. Lager Areas, Vehicels, and even more, its good to creat levels with space and more Space Stations. IN Hl2 the can have the area from even ns map x16. <img src='http://collective.valve-erc.com/images/hl2/faq/area_hl1_vs_hl2.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
    4. The community is HL friendly and HL2 its in HL stly.
    5. HL2 maps are work map editor from HL, its good for mapper.
    6. Flay write it on the page(<a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/' target='_blank'>NS.org</a>)

    Why not???

    1. HL2 calculates the light not ingame, doom3 calculate the lights ingame. This stop to creat butiful door opening shaddows.
    2. not more

    to more info read: <a href='http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?faq=source_mod_faq' target='_blank'>HL2 mod FAQ</a>

The coolest thing on source is that you can design EXTREMLY complex textures that only take the performance of a 1 poly texture.

Look arround the net there is a film somewhere (I think its from the designers conference in Leipzig don't know exactly.)

It shows how extrem complex 3d structures are saved into a 1 polygon texture that looks exactly like the complex texture does.

    Edit: Try this

It isn't NS' style to have vehicles and such. It has too be crowded and indoors. They actually couldn't improve the game a heck of a lot besides the graphics. Anything more might clutter it up.

I see no problem with NS on HL2. I <i>do</i> see a problem with alot of the ideas that have been suggested.

The maps are pretty good sized right now. Any longer and you'll be spending more time walking than playing. The vehicles are largely useless within the confines of small complexes, and going outdoors so we can play with vehicles creates other problems (IE: skulks get pwned. ditto for lerks)

So, no vehicles, and no outdoor. Just because the engine CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

And hey! Look, we're not flayra! We don't make NS2, he does. wow.

One thing tought is that it could make for GREAT indoor map. Ns2_Mineshaft. Still indoor with more atmosphere. And since map can be 16x time bigger, and that we are fine with the maps now, just mean : no more size restriction.

Whats so great about NS right now is that it could be easily played simply because alot more people own Half-Life for its low-cost, and low system requirments.

Now NS on HL2...granted it would look very purdy, would be available to a lower crowd due to its insane system requirments. With that said....

Only thing I'm really looking forward to is the implementation of the flamethrower, and a bunch of bells and whistles attached here and there. Maybe some chrome plating, and flashy lights. On top of that Indoor fighting has its limitations, and with the current nature of NS, therefor I'm afraid features such as vehicles, and such are out of the question. So, shiny new gadgets for the marines, and a huge graphic boost is what I should expect from the HL2 engine.
  • RuByRuBy Join Date: 2002-12-12 Member: 10732Members
I don't see NS that different from what it is now. What NS could use are some awesome graphics, much more atmosphere: vapour coming out of pipes and floor in a more natural way, more detailed alien goop and textures, more dynamic lighting, maybe more moving objects (I'm not thinking of vehicles here, but maybe trams like the one in bast), perhaps a 3d helmet model with a better hud and gadjets... Real pipes and stuff not those simple flat textures... Some new weapons and evolutions would be cool.

But that idea of a whole new game based off the NS background could be interesting... Can't think of any great concepts off the top of my head though

    (what? no STHWF jokes?)
outdoor maps have a serious flaw: MELEE COMBAT!

really, imagine outdoormaps, with melee aliens Vs ranged. by the time the alien gets near the marine he already will have 5 clips peppered inside him and the marine will be roasting the alien for his daily meal,
this means that the aliens have to be ultra tough or faster than a bunny-hopping celerity skulk on crack(which can, be explained plotwise, that the aliens have used the time they were on the ship to breed a new super-race or have grown more powerfull with the res on all the ships).

they could also implement a day and night system which would be pretty cool. imagine sittibng around a lantern hearing all kinds of chuckling noices and see flashes of claws and teeth. (darnit, i need to learn how to mod so i can implement the day-night system maybe in it.)

they could also give the aliens more ranged weapons but this would make the two sides not so different.

but overall IF they are moving to the source at some point, they should limit the maps to space-ships(or mayube a underground complex). BUT HL2 COULD PROVIDE EVEN BIGGER SPACESHIPS(although i get lost in these maps already) and better graphics and more utilitys too.

still they should first make sure they're done with this NS.
  • MajinMajin Join Date: 2003-05-29 Member: 16829Members, Constellation
I think someone should make a MAP of LV426
Maps with mad detail and effects are what will make HL2 so good to mod on.

NS doesnt need to have all kinds of cool things, but if it was more sexy due to a new engine under the hood, this would be much better!

Plus things like the new ability to interact with your enviroment (move tables and knock over things) would add so much sex to NS.

    CURVED SURFACES!
    OMG YES
I know it will be hard to get over the nice box curves we have now, but it may be a nice change.

Source has been built from scratch, not a single line of code was taken from another engine...
And yes Half-life is a (uses a) modified Q1 engine...

Who says that aliens are pure melee? Now they are (almost) purely melee, but probably they will have evolved into more flying, ranged, tanks and probably moving aliens... And yes skulks will have gone on crack and will always have chosen celerity offcourse... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

the only one problem is that(i read it, but i cant belive it) HL2 work with "pay to play". So we have to pay if we want to play HL2 online. Its not sure that we have to pay but i read about it. on a HL2 page.

its right ns is great at the moment, but in HL2 you can creat maps with 2 or 3 Space Stations, and a large space between the Station. With Vehicles you can drive(or fly) to the space stations.

Stop rumor mongering. That rumor got started because someone asked some valve employees who weren't prepared to answer ANY questions at all about pay-to-play. "No comment" doesn't mean "YES!" They'd've answered "No comment" if you asked "Will you encounter the goatse.cx monster in HL2?" They'd've answered "No comment" if you asked ANYTHING.

The closest to this being true is in the case of their "try before you buy" situation, where you basically rent the game for a few bucks to play for a few hours, and then if you like the game, you can buy it as normal.

Why am I so confident about this? Because of valve's constant support for mod makers. They aren't going to hurt their mod community like that. That'd be shooting themselves in the foot, or someplace worse, and they aren't that dumb!

True I don't know anyone opting for the monthly fee, but that DOES include the HL2 expansion packs that valve has already confirmed. Perhaps even a sequel to Opposing forces and blue shift will be released as well?

In any case, i just want the CD so i don't have to have steam and re-download if i want to play HL2 on another computer.

Oh and BTW, wasn't this thread about NS and HL2 not just talking about HL2? Bah.
