Always Keep Your Anti-virus Software!
I just re-installed Nortorn Antivirus and I found one virus -- The one that was keeping my internet running so slow. It was some kinda worm that re-routed the attackers network traffic through my modem, explaining the extensive slowdowns and dissconnections on my part.
Lesson learned here? Always keep your Antivirus software on, even if it prevents you from playing some games (*Cough cough* Black & White).

Hmm. Warcraft III won't let you host an Arranged Team game if you have WinXP's firewall on. I have (or did have) Norton, but I uninstalled it and just use Ad-Aware every now and then to check.
Thats why I deleted it, cause it was a pain.
Anywho I use TrendMicro's HouseCall.
I usually scan my comp with Norton every week or so, most often its clean because I don't download any suspiscious files or the like.

Then try <a href='http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/overview.htm' target='_blank'>PC-Cillin</a>.
It usually doesn't seem to be nearly as 'popular' as McAfee or Norton, but many 'professional' antivirus program comparisons over the past few years have given numerous nods to this software for its fast scan speed, low resource requirement, and reliability.
Want proof? I've proven it to myself already - my system noticably outperforms a similarly-equipped friend's computer running Norton.

Do boths systems have <i>exactly</i> the same programs/games/whatever installed? Do they both have <i>exactly</i> the same updates/OS?

On my mothers (on which my sister constantly downloads crap)... lots. Can't remember how many but I know it was well into double figures.

I knew <i>someone</i> would <i>have</i> to make that comment. The question I kept to myself was, how long could someone hold off stating that very obvious (and expected) question? I must say, I'm surprised - I wasn't expecting a time as short as 5 minutes.
No, they're not <i>exactly</i> the same, but they're close enough for a simple 'unofficial' comparison.
Besides, the degree of similarity between my computer and my friend's computer is not the focus of this thread. It's just an example I threw in to at least partially support my statement that PC-Cillin is a much better antivirus program than most people think. The realm of antivirus isn't just ruled by Norton and McAfee, after all.

Methinks the fact that my mum's computer has WinXP has something to do with it tbh.
I've been thinking of switching to PC-Cillin instead of AVG, though. AVG only updates every 15 days or so.

On off-on-topic: I had ~125 crapfiles on my old pentium 200mHZ that barely could make it to connect to internet...
