Third Person

Fact or myth?
Hey there. I've heard that there's a way to go to a third person view. Is this true? And if so, how do you do it? Thanks in advance.

Still possible, and still very much the exploit it was in 1.0x. Therefore, I ain't telling how it's done.

You lose as much as you gain frankly so I don't see any harm in it although I perfer 1st person.

thats a lie.
3rd person is just exploiting.
you gain too much.
its also like a wallhack too often.

But the marine minimap isn't an 'exploit', even though it works exactly like 3rd person...

3rd person is an exploit, but it makes the game much harder and offers few real advantages anyway so I don't think it's much of a problem, not that many people know how to do it. You can't switch back and forth at all, you have to commit to it from beginning to end(until you restart HL).

3rd person makes skulking fantastic, if you can get used to it.

As far as I know, it would make a very poor wallhack, as NS only sends data on ents that are in view, so you can't look halfway across the map to see what defenses are in a room or anything. Also, if there were people close enough that data was being sent on them, using a thirdperson wallhack thing could very well just get you shot due to you not being able to see directly in front of you anymore
(Yes, I experimented with it a while back, and even reported it to Flayra. It's just a matter of turning off a certain command/cvar, but I guess it got lost in the 2.0 shuffle)

Edit: Oh, yeah, that screenshot reminded me that you also don't see any HUD graphics when in 3rd person, only text. So no upgrade notification for you.

thirdperson would be better for mellee
(skulking, fade swiping)

but i have checked out the Half-Life thirdperson
and the camera auto adjusts poorly

Max Payne and Jedi Knight II have had the best 3rd person cameras I have seen thus far

I always thought third person for Skulks would make it really easy IT DOES man thats easy no more guessing where the marine went I can track him and dive into packs of 3 marines and keep my eye on all of them makes being skulk nice and easy.

In fact, in order to go back to firstperson from thirdperson one you put it on ingame, all you have to do is type 'firstperson' in console without quotes and it'll go back.

It's actually horribly confusing and not practical at all. The skulk model does not accurately portray the direction in which you're facing; it turns to run in the direction you're moving IIRC but you have to use the camera to see what direction you're pointing, and then try to estimate where you can actually hit someone with a bite. Makes biting while strafing/moving diagonally/etc much harder as well as figuring out the bite range. Then there's the fact that you won't be able to use any ranged attacks well at all, and you can't see things on the HUD such as available upgrades, hive indicators and energy.

Yeah but I came from JK outcast so lots of practice in the third-person play

JK outcast is fun. Run around with elite lightsabers and stuff, cutting people's arms off.
