Lets be honest guys, what was this topic about? asking if people want to help remake nancy, all these attacks on them are un called for, simply put, if you dont want to help, you dont have to say anything.

It is ENTIRELY up to them if they want to remake the map, its their time they are putting to it, it doesnt affect your lifes in the slightest, if the remake is good, servers may put it on their rotation, it then affects you, but even then with the attitudes ive seen here, it wont affect it more than taking 5 seconds to find another server.

I thought this forum was about encouragement of mappers, save the critisism for when they release screen shots or the final product.

Oh and remake does not necesarily mean "TWIN" the item, NS 2.0 is a remake of NS 1.0, is it the same?

It's also up to the author of Nancy. Not many people seem to be paying much attention to that.

tbh, I think the creator of nancy might well be flattered that so many people like his map enough to want to recreate it to still work with 2.0. Plus, he'd still get a lot of the credit for the map, with less (or none) of the work.

I love Nancy. I would be willing to help out. I mean, there has to be an E-Mail address or somthing we can contact DD at. There is a huge world outside the NS forums. But I can help out.

I was just wondering if this was going ahead?

I was also wondering how the hell to get into contact with the creator :/

If this "Saving NS Nancy" project goes ahead and I get some more free time I might help out a little.

Maby after we have something simmilar to the original we could have experienced mappers add better textures, visuals, lighting and maby 1 or two layout changes (the vents that you can shoot the hive from, the big long corridors outside of subspace), this would preserve the uniqueness of the map which some people seem to really like, myself included, while making it all pretty and playable.

All this of course with permission and oversight of the creator.

I e-mailed devildog, hopefully he gets it and responds to it. Then we can make ns_nancy2

Yes, if we get a go-ahead from devildog I'll be glad to start working on it right away.

Bottom line is, regardless of your feelings on it, it's gone. If you're saddened by this, so be it, but you'll get over it. Maps have been removed from plenty of mods before, and will be again. That's how being part of an ever-evolving process works.

I won't go any further in-depth on my own (strong pre-1.0) opinion on the matter, but I am by no means alone. Hell, I specifically avoid going in-depth for the exact reason I'm quoting, but apparently I need to be even more vague...

I wonder why an ns mapper would be so against remaking one of the ns maps. If ns_eclispe map file was lost surely there would be just as big an effort to restore that map. I don't think theres anything wrong with restoring a map that a lot of players had fun with. There's no reason to give up on Nancy.

I missed this post unfortunately =\

I'd like to volunteer my help in this project. I can do some basic architecture and I might be able to help on some of the hallways (any help is better then none I say). PM me or contact me via email if you want my help.

I hadn't seen this post before, but I had been working on a 'tribute' to nancy, I've got from noname to port engine all made up, fairly close to how the original appears, although aux gen needed some touching up and altering. So if people wanna cooperate, I can show them what I've got so far. I've not reached devildog yet, but I've got the time to make it spare now, and if he doesn't give the go ahead, it was a learning experience anyway ; - ).

Nancy was just So Damn Fun, I can't imagine letting it go. Sure, maps are pulled from lots of mods, and in a perfect world we wouldn't get attached to ANYTHING and therefore wouldn't be sad to see something go...

But here we are, in a not so perfect world, and we want Nancy. Or a map with the familiarity of Nancy. Undeniably it was a fun map in some way, shape, or form. Undeniably, it was a quality map, with a good design and solid texturing. And, of course, it was one of the original showcase maps for NS and should therefore be treated with some respect. Why not remake it?

If the one mapper or the whole team of NS mappers wants to glaze over the fact that Nancy ever existed, so be it, but the fans don't have to join in. I say, bullocks to that and bring on Nancy 2.

    damn straight.

a nancy remake would be amazing. to be honest i don't really get the mappers objection to a remake of nancy as it was one of the most fun maps i remember.

After thinking about it I can understand how ns mappers would want us to focus on what was added to 2.0 and not what was lost. I love all the new addtions to the maps and gameplay; its all GREAT! Really I'm quite pleased and impressed with everything. And I'm a vet so I've noticed the hallways added here and doors removed there and the gameflow nuances changed due to chokepoint changes and all that. I wasted my whole weekend playing ns!

But that doesn't change the fact that Nancy was so fun that its hard to miss. I know this Nancy project comes at a time when we should be congratulating the ns team on their accomplishments in 2.0 but there are plenty of threads on that and plenty of attention focus there as well. So let's be constructive on this lowilly thread and focus on how and if we can get nancy back.

I would also like to contribute to the ns_nancy v2.0 project. It's too bad that the source was lost but I have already have a ton of thoughts on how to make nancy a whole lot better. I've never mapped before but am more than willing to start working on the map. The bad news is we cannot directly edit the map from source. The good news in that Nancy has so many things to fix that it would basically require an entire rebuild anyway. Here are some of the initial changes I would make:

    Marine Start

Make it so that the marines cannot be locked into the bridge area

Make it larger to incorporate more players easily and easier to access the rest of the map

Try and keep the idea of a ship docking to a space station while avoiding being blocked in.

The first res node located cloest to the marine start needs to reworked so that it is not always attacked

    Mess Hall

Mess hall is too much of a choke point. If one side took control it would lock out the other team.

While it is a good thing to encourage encounters, it takes away from scouting and moves it too much to base defense.

Instead of that stupid pit to get into the Aux Gen, a simple door way would suffice.

    More ideas on the way...

Trust me, I will keep everything faithful to the NS alumni. I've been playing this mod for almost a year and I understand how 2.0 is mostly an improvement but somewhat a huge change from what we're used to. Most of the changes to the old official maps were a shock. Caged is completely different and so is Subspace, this ticked me off at first, but I'll go along with it for now. Anyway, I hope we can get this ns_nancy project going!!

I would only play Nancy if you make the 'unnamed hive' (Which is really 'Mother interface') NOT such a deathtrap for the aliens that start there. If you start in that hive, you WILL loose.
  • MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members

Though I really don't want to start up the nancy nomenclature debate again.

I think we should get this a bit more organised, such as a team and see who's doing what. Right now all I see is a bunch of mappers offering this and that but not much else. This project has to get off good will and into the work involved in recreating one of the nicest ns maps ever.
  • QuazQuaz Join Date: 2003-01-15 Member: 12327Members, Constellation
I've started to put together a basic layout of ns_nancy for NS 2.0. I will post the image once I've completed most of the changes. Then we can use it as a blueprint for creating the map. I will need the assistance of some of you master mappers out there to assist me. I really hope to get this going and maybe even make it an official map again once the next revision of NS comes out.

Here is my draft of changes. I still have alot of work to do on the vents and marine start. I like the extra entrance to subspace but I couldn't figure out how to make it fair because it is such a short walk from Marine Start. It's a first step, I just wanted to get it started.

i think you can make out some of the vents under and over the floors
  • Heavy_DHeavy_D Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10816Members
If you wanted to make the second route from marine start to subspace longer, why not add some vertical height to it? Like have the weldable door/whatever at the top or bottom of a ladder, and then on the other side have it decend/acsend to the previous height after a short distance. It'd cut down the r_speeds in the area, and if you called the area 'repair duct' or something it'd explain why it needs welding open. Also, with the new corridor off port engine, you may want to put the s bend closer to mess hall for vis-blocking purposes. Either that or have it go at a different height to the subtunnel(which is at mess hall height I believe) then connect it to mess with a ramp. Finally, I'm guessing the little vent between mess and auxillary generators has been knocked through to provide an onos traversable path, yeah? I just worry the original reason for the vent was to minimise r_speeds for players, and so some work might be needed to maintain that.

Today I'll try making mess hall, and then the new port engine tunnel. If I get round to it, I'll post a work in progress version, showing a few of these changes.
